# I Define My Freedom As…

Hello, dear friends,

I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Every year, when Independence Day arrives, we proudly celebrate the freedom of our nation. We remember the sacrifices of our freedom fighters, salute the Tricolour, and feel proud to be Indians.

But this year, I began thinking about a different question:

What does freedom mean to me personally?

We all enjoy the freedom of an independent nation, but each of us has our own definition of personal freedom.

For one person, it may mean travelling around the world. For another, it may mean financial independence. For someone else, it may simply mean having the freedom to make their own choices.

For me, freedom is not just about breaking chains. It is about having the courage to become the person I truly want to be.

“Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.” — Mahatma Gandhi

So, on this Independence Day, here is how I define my freedom.

❤️Freedom is to create fearlessly

I want the freedom to write, paint, sketch, experiment, and create without constantly worrying about whether someone will approve of my work.

Creativity needs courage. If I keep asking, “What will people say?”, I may never create anything at all.

Freedom means allowing my imagination to fly.

❤️Freedom is to break free from expectations

As we grow older, we realise that life becomes tiring when we constantly try to satisfy everyone.

Society has plenty of expectations—how we should dress, behave, work, retire and even grow old!

But I believe:

“Your life is your message to the world. Make sure it is inspiring.”

I want to live according to my values, not according to somebody else’s checklist.

❤️Freedom is to embrace my truest self

I don’t want to spend my life pretending to be someone I am not.

I have strengths and weaknesses, successes and failures, dreams and limitations. They are all part of my story.

Growing older has taught me that authenticity is far more comfortable than pretending.

❤️Freedom is to enjoy my hobbies

For me, hobbies are not merely ways to pass time. They are ways to celebrate life.

Writing, painting, sketching, yoga, walking, playing games, learning new things—these activities keep my mind active and my heart young.

Retirement has taught me an important lesson:

You don’t retire from life; you retire from a job.

❤️Freedom is to express my feelings in words

Words have always fascinated me. When I write, I can give a voice to feelings that otherwise remain hidden inside me.

Happiness becomes more meaningful when shared. Pain becomes lighter when expressed. Memories become immortal when written down.

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” — Rudyard Kipling

Perhaps that is why I love writing.

❤️ Freedom is to create my own rules

Life does not come with a universal instruction manual.

With age and experience, we learn which rules are worth following and which ones can be questioned.

I want to follow rules that bring discipline, kindness and purpose—but I also want the freedom to create my own path.

❤️Freedom is to take risks

Freedom also means having the courage to step outside my comfort zone.

Not every risk will succeed. Some may even lead to disappointment. But failure is not always the opposite of success; sometimes it is simply another teacher.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

I would rather try, stumble and learn than spend my life wondering, “What if I had tried?”

❤️Freedom is to live my life on my own terms

At this stage of life, I have learned that I cannot control what everyone thinks about me—and I don’t need to.

I want to spend my time doing things that give me happiness, purpose and peace.

My life may not be perfect, but it is mine.

❤️Freedom is to be free from my worries

This may be the most difficult freedom of all.

We cannot eliminate every problem from our lives. But we can learn not to give every problem permanent residence in our minds.

Sometimes freedom means saying:

“I have done what I can. Now I will let life take its course.”

Peace of mind is perhaps one of the greatest forms of freedom.

❤️ Freedom is to define my life in my own words

Finally, I want to be the author of my own story.

Others may suggest the title, criticise the chapters or misunderstand the plot—but I hold the pen.

I cannot rewrite my past, but I can certainly decide how I will write the next chapter.

❤️My Freedom, My Responsibility

Our national freedom was earned through extraordinary courage and sacrifice. We should never take it for granted.

But personal freedom also comes with responsibility. My freedom ends where another person’s dignity, safety or freedom begins.

This Independence Day, therefore, I celebrate both kinds of freedom—the freedom of my country and the freedom within myself.

  • Freedom to dream.
  • Freedom to create.
  • Freedom to learn.
  • Freedom to express.
  • Freedom to take chances.
  • Freedom to enjoy my hobbies.
  • Freedom to grow older without growing old at heart.

And above all, the freedom to live authentically.

“The greatest freedom is the freedom to be yourself.”

So, if someone asks me today, “What does freedom mean to you?”

My answer is simple:

Freedom is not having a life without boundaries.
Freedom is having the courage to choose my own direction within them.

And perhaps that is the most beautiful gift of independence:

The freedom to become the person I choose to be.

Happy Independence Day to all my dear friends!

  1. That is a big snake 😊 . Many years ago we had kept a pile of coconut fronds in our backyard. Someone came to collect them and at the bottom there was a python sleeping 😊. I agree with your thoughts. Thank you.

    • Oh my goodness! 😄 A sleeping python hiding beneath a pile of coconut fronds must have been quite a surprise! 🐍😊 I can only imagine the shock when you discovered what was quietly resting underneath.

It’s fascinating how nature can be right in our backyard, often in places we least expect. Your experience adds a wonderful real-life touch to the thoughts I shared in the post.

Thank you for sharing this memorable story and for agreeing with my thoughts.

  2. Verma ji, your words have touched my heart! 🇮🇳

What a beautiful and deeply personal reflection on freedom. You’ve taken the concept of independence beyond the national narrative and made it intensely personal—and that takes real courage.

I especially loved how you said:

“Freedom is not having a life without boundaries. Freedom is having the courage to choose my own direction within them.”

That line will stay with me for a long time.

Your thoughts on creativity, authenticity, and the courage to make mistakes resonated deeply. In a world that constantly tells us who to be, it takes wisdom to pause and ask, “Who do I truly want to become?”

And your reminder that “you don’t retire from life; you retire from a job”—what a powerful perspective! It’s a gift to see someone embrace life with such curiosity and zest.

Thank you for sharing your heart so openly, Verma ji. You reminded us that freedom isn’t just something we inherit from our nation—it’s something we must claim, nurture, and live every single day.

Keep writing. Keep creating. Keep inspiring. 🙏

Happy Independence Day to you! May your pen never stop, and your spirit never grow old.

    • Thank you so much for these beautiful and heartfelt words. 🙏🇮🇳 Your thoughtful response means more to me than I can express.

I’m especially glad that the thought “you don’t retire from life; you retire from a job” resonated with you. For me, retirement has been not an ending, but an opportunity to rediscover freedom—to write, create, learn, explore, and follow the passions that sometimes get pushed aside during our working years.
