Being a senior citizen and spending a considerable part of the day at home, I have realised that staying mentally and physically active is just as important as taking care of our physical health.
Age may slow us down a little, but it does not have to slow down our curiosity, creativity or enthusiasm for life.
Over the years, I have developed a few simple morning habits that help me remain energetic, mentally alert and positive. They are not complicated—and that is perhaps why I can follow them consistently.
“Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn
❤️ Wake Up to a Glass of Water
After several hours of sleep, I begin my day with a glass of water. The body loses water overnight through breathing and perspiration, so morning hydration is a simple way to replace some of that fluid.
Even mild dehydration can affect attention, mood and mental performance. I therefore prefer water before reaching for my morning cup of tea.
It is a small habit, but sometimes the smallest habits make the biggest difference.
❤️ Walk, Breathe and Meditate
One of my favourite parts of the morning is my walk with senior-citizen friends. Walking gives me exercise, but it also gives me companionship, conversation and laughter.
After my walk, I spend about 5–10 minutes on deep breathing, mindfulness or meditation. These practices help me slow down, reduce stress and begin the day with a calmer mind.
Regular physical activity is associated with better brain health and cognitive function as we grow older. According to the World Health Organization, older adults should aim for 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each week.
For me, exercise is not punishment—it is an investment in tomorrow.
❤️Give My Brain a Nutritious Breakfast
I believe the brain deserves good fuel. My breakfast often includes foods such as oats, curd, almonds, walnuts, eggs and seasonal fruits.
Nuts provide healthy fats and nutrients, while oats provide fibre and carbohydrates that can provide sustained energy. Foods containing omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, protein and fibre can all form part of a balanced diet.
Of course, there is no magical “memory food.” Good brain health comes from the overall quality of our diet rather than one particular ingredient.
❤️ Keep Moving with Yoga and Swimming
My morning activities may include walking, yoga and, whenever possible, my favourite exercise—swimming.
Exercise improves cardiovascular fitness and blood circulation and is linked with better mood and cognitive health. Physical activity also stimulates the release of chemicals in the brain that support a sense of well-being.
As I often remind myself:
“Movement is medicine.”
At my age, I don’t exercise merely to look fit. I exercise so that I can continue enjoying my writing, painting, travelling and everyday life.
❤️Enjoy the Morning Sunlight
During my morning walk, I also enjoy some time outdoors in natural light. Morning light helps regulate our circadian rhythm, the body’s internal 24-hour clock, which influences sleep and wakefulness.
Sunlight also contributes to vitamin D production, although the amount produced depends on factors such as skin type, location, season and duration of exposure.
So I enjoy the morning outdoors—but I don’t believe in excessive sun exposure. A little sunshine, combined with sensible protection, is enough to make the morning feel brighter.
❤️Keep My Phone Away
This is one habit I have consciously developed.
During yoga, walking and meditation, I keep my mobile phone silent. I avoid beginning my day with a flood of messages, notifications and social-media updates.
Instead of allowing the phone to decide what occupies my mind first, I prefer to decide for myself.
“Don’t let technology become the master of your mind.”
❤️ Read, Write and Keep My Brain Curious
Finally, I read something positive and spend some time writing. Sometimes I read a few pages of a book or a blog; sometimes I answer a daily writing prompt.
Writing makes me think, organise my ideas and express my feelings. Reading exposes me to new information and perspectives. These mentally stimulating activities help me remain curious and engaged.
I believe curiosity is one of the best exercises for an ageing brain.
❤️A Morning Routine Is an Investment in Life
Healthy ageing does not require dramatic transformations. It requires small habits repeated consistently.
A glass of water, a morning walk, a few minutes of meditation, nutritious food, exercise, sunlight, less screen time and some reading or writing may appear ordinary. Together, however, they create a powerful morning ritual.
Growing older is inevitable. Growing mentally and physically inactive is not.
So, every morning, I remind myself: keep moving, keep learning, keep creating and keep smiling.
After all, the goal is not merely to add years to life, but to add life to those years.
BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE

Really enjoyed reading this Verma ji. 🤍 I love how you’ve kept everything so simple and practical. Walking, reading, writing, staying curious… these little things really do keep life active and interesting. And I absolutely agree growing older doesn’t mean we have to stop growing. 😊🦋✨
Thank you so much for your warm and thoughtful words! 🤍😊 I truly believe that life becomes more meaningful when we keep moving, learning, creating, and staying curious. Age may add years to our lives, but it doesn’t have to put a full stop to our dreams.
Your words resonate deeply—not just as advice for seniors, but as timeless wisdom for anyone at any stage of life. The way you’ve woven together simple habits with profound intention is truly inspiring.
What touched me most was your reminder that “growing older is inevitable, but growing inactive is not.” That line alone is worth framing on a wall!
I especially loved how you emphasise connection—the morning walks with friends, the laughter, the companionship. It’s so easy to focus only on the physical aspects of health, but you’ve beautifully highlighted that emotional and social well-being are just as vital.
Your approach to technology is also a much-needed lesson for all generations. Choosing to decide what occupies your mind rather than letting notifications decide for you—that’s real wisdom in the digital age.
And that closing thought? “The goal is not merely to add years to life, but to add life to those years.” Pure gold. ✨
Thank you for sharing this. You’ve reminded us all that mornings aren’t just about routines—they’re about rituals that honour our body, mind, and spirit. May your mornings continue to be filled with curiosity, movement, and joy!
Thank you so much for this beautiful and deeply thoughtful comment. 🙏😊 Your words mean a lot to me.
I am delighted that the message resonated with you. I have always felt that growing older is not about slowing down completely, but about discovering new ways to keep the body moving, the mind curious, and the heart connected.
Absolutely! 😊 Physical activity is truly one of nature’s simplest mood boosters. The release of endorphins can leave us feeling lighter, happier, and more energetic.
And I love the phrase “the side effects of endorphins”—perhaps these are the rare side effects we actually want: a smile on the face, positivity in the mind, and a little more joy in everyday life!
Great Post Vijay. I agree, the quality of life is what matters and we should all be doing what we can to ensure we are fit and healthy enough to enjoy life and participate fully. Now the academic year has started my plans were to start swimming, but now I’m waiting for a horrible head cold to pass
Thank you so much for your thoughtful words! 😊 I completely agree—the real goal is not simply to live longer, but to remain fit and active enough to enjoy whatever life brings our way.
Swimming is a wonderful choice, so I hope that horrible head cold clears up very soon! 🤧🏊♀️ Please give your body the time it needs to recover; the swimming pool isn’t going anywhere. Once you’re feeling better, you can dive back in with renewed energy.
You are fortunate to practice bunch of good habits. I liked “glass of water, morning walk, few minutes of meditation, nutritious food, exercise, sunlight, less screen time and some reading or writing”, would like to follow same
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I’m delighted that these simple habits appealed to you.
I truly believe that a healthy morning routine doesn’t have to be complicated. A glass of water, a little movement, some sunlight, a few quiet minutes, and time for reading or writing can make a remarkable difference to the way we begin our day

I’m really happy to know that my morning routine has inspired you. A good morning can set the tone for the entire day, and it doesn’t have to be complicated—just a little movement, some quiet time, and something that brings joy to the mind.
A beautiful and inspiring reflection on healthy ageing!
What I especially appreciate is that you have presented a morning routine not as a rigid schedule, but as a conscious way of living with movement for the body, meditation for the mind, nourishing food for the brain, sunlight for the rhythm of life, and reading and writing for continued curiosity.
Your thought that “Growing older is inevitable. Growing mentally and physically inactive is not” beautifully captures the essence of active ageing.
Perhaps the greatest lesson here is that vitality is not determined by age alone; it is nurtured by our daily choices. When we continue to walk, learn, create, connect and remain curious, every morning becomes an opportunity to celebrate life.
A wonderfully positive reminder that we should not merely add years to our life, but add awareness, purpose and joy to those years. 🙏
Thank you so much for this thoughtful and beautifully expressed response. 🙏 You have captured the true spirit of the reflection so wonderfully.
I strongly believe that ageing is not about withdrawing from life, but about continuing to participate in it—with movement, curiosity, creativity, relationships, and gratitude. A morning routine may look simple, but when it becomes a conscious habit, it can give the entire day a sense of purpose.
All good habits to get into Verma-ji. While we can sometimes indulge ourselves in a guilty treat or a lazy day, making those the norm would have totally different results. Hydration, nutrition, stimulating the body and the brain all provide long lasting benefits and keep us keeping on. Have a great day. Allan
Thank you, Allan! 😊 You’ve summed it up beautifully. A little guilty treat or a lazy day now and then is certainly part of enjoying life, but it’s our everyday habits that quietly shape our health and happiness.
Keeping the body moving, the mind active, and giving ourselves good nutrition and hydration—these simple things help us keep going with energy and enthusiasm.
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🙏 I’m glad you liked the routine. I believe a simple, balanced daily plan can bring discipline, peace, and a little more joy into our lives.
Wishing you too many happy and productive days ahead! 🌷
