Unveiling the Magic of Lord Jagannath Puri:

Have you ever dreamt of witnessing a festival that can wash away life’s obstacles? Well, today marks the grand Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. It is believed that witnessing this chariot festival can remove all obstacles from a devotee’s life. Jai Jagannath.

On this auspicious occasion, I wish to share some memories and insights about Lord Jagannath.

Back in my college days, I was studying at an agriculture college. We had the privilege of going on an educational tour to North India. Given the presence of the world-famous Rice Research Institute in Cuttack, we had the opportunity to visit there.

Taking advantage of this, we decided to explore nearby attractions, including places like Puri and Konark. It was early morning when our group of 40 students arrived at Puri railway station,.

This was the incident of about 40 years ago. As soon as we disembarked, many priests, known locally as ‘Pandas,’ were waiting to welcome us.

Here’s where things got interesting. These pandas first inquired about our village and our father’s name. Upon learning this information, they seemed to know everything about us, which was astonishing.

This was before the computer age, making it even more intriguing how they had such detailed knowledge. Perhaps their communication system was extremely robust.

Each panda had a designated area, so based on our village and district, they directed us to our respective panda. These pandas offered complete arrangements for accommodation and food.

Some of our friends refused their services, but the pandas were persistent and resorted to forceful behavior. This was disheartening to witness in such a holy city. Eventually, we decided to proceed with the temple visit.

The heart of Puri lies within the colossal Jagannath Temple. Here, Lord Jagannath, a captivating form of Lord Krishna, dwells alongside his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra.

The annual Rath Yatra, a vibrant chariot procession, celebrates a legendary tale. The temple was established by King Indradyumna of Malwa, whose father was Bharat and his mother was Sumati.

According to mythology, the king dreamt of Lord Jagannath, who instructed him to find his idol in a cave on the Nilachal mountain and build a temple for it.

It is believed that, once Lord Jagannath’s sister, Subhadra, expressed her desire to see the city. To fulfill her wish, Lord Jagannath took her on a chariot ride around Dwarka. This event inspired the annual Rath Yatra.

The build-up to Rath Yatra is electric. Elaborate chariots are constructed, each one a masterpiece dedicated to the divine trio. The festival itself unfolds over ten days, with devotees pulling the colossal chariots through the city streets.

Legend has it that a single pull on these chariots is akin to performing a hundred sacrifices!

But Puri’s magic extends beyond the festivities. The temple itself is a treasure trove of fascinating secrets. Here’s a peek at a few:

  • The Beating Heart: A mysterious aspect of Lord Jagannath is his heart, which is believed to still beat like a living human’s heart. This heart is preserved inside the wooden idol of Lord Jagannath.
  • Every 12 years, the idols in the temple are replaced. During this process, the entire city of Puri experiences a blackout, and no one is allowed to enter the temple.
The priests, blindfolded and with gloved hands, transfer a mysterious substance called ‘Brahma Padartha’ from the old idol to the new one. This substance, believed to be connected to Lord Krishna, remains a mystery as no one has seen it.
  • During the Rath Yatra, the king of Puri himself sweeps the chariots with a golden broom.
  • Despite being near the sea, the sound of waves cannot be heard once you step inside the temple’s main gate but can be heard again as soon as you step outside.
  • No birds fly over the temple, and the flag atop the temple always flutters in the opposite direction of the wind.
  • The temple’s shadow never falls on the ground at any time of the day. The flag on the temple’s 45-story shikhara (pinnacle) is changed daily, and it is believed that if this does not happen, the temple will remain closed for 18 years.
  • The Sudarshan Chakra on the temple’s shikhara appears to face you no matter which direction you view it from.
  • The Never-Ending Prasad: In the temple kitchen, food is cooked in seven pots stacked one over the other on a wood fire, with the topmost pot cooking first.
The prasadam (sacred food offering) never falls short, and as soon as the temple doors close, the prasadam also finishes.

These wonders solidify our faith in the divine power of Lord Jagannath. Our college trip wasn’t just an educational tour; it was a spiritual awakening. We reveled in the prasadam, soaking in the blessings of the Lord.

Warm wishes to you on the sacred occasion of Jagannath Rath Yatra. Let us leave behind our egos as we greet the benevolent Lord Jagannath and seek his blessings.
