# Invest in our planet #

Dears friends

Today is 22nd April, the Earth day. Earth Day 2022  marked its  52nd anniversary, because the first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970, when San Francisco activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join in a grassroots demonstration.

They are concerned with serious issues of toxic drinking water, air pollution, and the effects of pesticides. There were an impressive 20 million Americans—10% of the population—ventured outdoors and protested together.

This year’s theme is “Invest In Our Planet.” The idea behind this year’s theme is to encourage governments, corporations, and private citizens to take concrete steps toward following more sustainable practices, buying from responsible companies, and taking more of an active role in the Earth’s wellbeing.

Climate change and Health

Genetics and our lifestyle primarily influenced our health. But environment and climatic condition around us also affected our health to a great extent.

It is estimated that around 13 million deaths around the world each year are because of avoidable environmental causes. There is a debate over climate change all over the world.

Over 90% of people breathe unhealthy, polluted air, resulting in several respiratory and other ailments in the human body. Climate change has a very severe effect on us, leading to death and illness from polluted water and air., heat waves, storms, floods . It not only affects our physical health, but also creates mental issues.

Need of the hour

We have experienced global warming, frequent natural disasters, water crisis, a rise in pollution everywhere. It is said that after 50-60 years sizeable chunk of the fertile land will be converted into barren land because of degradation of soil. This results in severe food crises in the world if we do nothing to save the earth.

When our family grows, we move to a bigger house, but we have only one planet to live on which cannot grow bigger. So we must control the population, respect environment and limit plastic use and electronic waste to the minimum.

Reduce Carbon footprint

According to WHO, between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approx.. 250000 additional deaths per year from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea and heat stress. Climate change involves pollution and global warming because of industrial and vehicle emission. That leads to many respiratory and other diseases. Along with that, there are extreme climates and rising sea level. Extreme climate hampers our agriculture too.

The UN has accepted a net zero emission target to minimize the emission.  It is time for us to heal our dying planet by curtailing fossil fuel consumption and vegetation.

We have found that many tech companies are far ahead of governments in implementing solutions to lower their carbon footprints. Infosys turned carbon neutral now, that is 30 years ahead of the Paris Agreement’s 2050 deadline. That is the great news.

We have read today that Uttarakhand has turned out to be the warmest in the last 30 years, because of ecological imbalance and high temperature levels that have increased the snow melting in that hill area. There is no snow left at high altitude places like Badrinath and Kedarnath. That places are usually covered in snow at this time of the year. Yes, there is a deforestation, industrialization all that affects our eco system.

We should maintain balance

The pandemic has revealed weaknesses in all areas of our society and underlined the urgency of creating sustainable well-being societies committed to achieving fair health now and for future generations without breaching ecological limits,”.

The health crisis in this pandemic has forced us to revisit our priorities regarding our health and environment. We need to deescalate our lifestyle to ensure a greener planet and a sound mental and physical wellbeing as the prime importance.

Friends, “we have to break these cycles of destruction for the planet and human health, that requires legislative action, corporate reform and individuals to be supported and motivated to save the earth and to save ourselves.

Today, not only is Earth Day a day meant to increase awareness of environmental problems, but it is also becoming a popular time for all of us to come together to clean up litter, plant more and trees, that simply reflect on the beauty of nature.

Friends, we can Celebrate the Earth Day by appreciating and respecting the environment by doing something that inspires others also.

Support Our Pollinators

Bring native bees and other pollinating creatures to your garden. We can do this by planting selected and the right plants. That plants attract butterfly and hummingbirds. They are super pollinator and helps in beauty our Garden and environment.

Clean Up Plastic in Your Neighborhood or Local Park

One of the best ways to connect with the Earth is through cleanups! Go on a walk with a trash bag and help to clean up any plastic that you find.  As we realise that plastic permeates every aspect of our lives. We should vow to ditch plastic use while growing and storing more of our own food .

Swap Out Kitchen and Household Products

We use plastic product in the cooking and cleaning products that touch the food we eat as well as our skin. We should use biodegradable and do not use chemicals or plastic. Think 100% recycled aluminum foil, chemical-free parchment paper for baking, compostable bags made with potato starch, and even vegetable-based inks for their packaging.

Plant more & more  Tree

We love our trees! They capture carbon, cool overheated places, benefit agriculture, support pollinators, reduce the risk of disease transmission, and boost local economies.

It is a known fact that planting one oak tree brings in more insect and bird species than an entire yard of plants . We can talk to our local government about planting more trees and native garden beds in public spaces. We can also consider planting at our own property!

Stop use of Pesticides and Chemicals :

We know that pesticides and chemical fertilizers are used extensively for better yield. But at the same time , that creates a problem as the soil gets barren land and other hazards results. we should focus on the health of the soil that supports the plant. We should use organic manures . Its nutrient rich in organic matter, and plants thrive.

Like wise we use organic soil amendments to turn your poor garden soil into a nutrient-rich paradise in which plants will thrive. Please enjoy gardening.

Conserve Water :

We waste a lot of water. Avoid over-watering your plants and improve their health by knowing how much your garden really needs.

In agriculture we can use sprinkler and drip irrigation system to conserve water.

Avoid wastage of water in our household use because water is on scarcity day by day .

Harvest your rainwater from a roof, gutters, and sky with a rain barrel. If you have a low-lying area, consider planting a rain garden, which captures runoff, filters out pollutants, and provides food and shelter for butterflies, songbirds, and other wildlife.

Avoid Wastage of Food

About one-third of the food that we produce every year goes to waste annually . On the other hand, our vast population goes to bed hungry .

How do we avoid waste in our own lives? And , how can we improve our diet so that it’s healthier for ourselves?

One way is to care about your “footprint,” which is the result of everything that it takes to get your food from the farm to your plate.

“A nation that destroys its soils destroys itself. Forests are the lungs of our land, purifying the air and giving fresh strength to our people.” —Franklin D. Roosevelt

  2. Thank you for this reminder sir. Sustainable development is the key nowadays. We all read such things in textbooks, but hardly a few people follow them. Most just read the books, pass the exams and become uneducated again. The real educated ones follow such practices proactively. And that is what we all need to do as well else we will be soon digging our own graves.
