# Setting Personal Goals #

My Journey from Retirement to Rediscovery
Daily writing prompt
Do you set personal goals for yourself?

Hello, dear friends!

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt asks an interesting question: “Do you set personal goals for yourself?”

My answer is a wholehearted yes! I believe personal goals give direction to our lives, encourage us to discover our potential, and remind us that there is always something new to learn, achieve, or experience.

But I have also learned something important: our goals should change as we move through different stages of life. Sometimes, achieving a goal brings success; at other times, the journey itself becomes our greatest reward.

Let me explain why I believe in setting personal goals and share a little of my own journey.

Imagine boarding a train without knowing your destination. You might enjoy the scenery, meet interesting people, and have wonderful experiences, but how would you know where you were heading?

Personal goals serve as our life’s compass. They help us identify our priorities and use our time and energy meaningfully.

Our goals need not always be ambitious. Someone may dream of becoming a successful entrepreneur, while another may wish to improve their health, learn a musical instrument, read more books, or spend quality time with family.

Every goal has value when it contributes to our growth and happiness.

As the familiar saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

We do not need to see the entire road ahead. We simply need the courage to take the first step.

Let me share something from my own life.

After spending more than three decades in the banking profession, I retired from the State Bank of India in April 2017. Retirement brought freedom from professional responsibilities, but it also presented an important question: What next?

For many years, my working life had revolved around banking, customers, targets, and responsibilities. Suddenly, I had more freedom to decide how I wanted to spend my time.

I could have spent my retirement simply relaxing and looking back at my professional achievements. Instead, I decided to reconnect with interests that had taken a back seat during my working years.

I began blogging, rediscovered my passion for art, and started exploring new opportunities for creative expression. Gradually, writing became an important part of my daily life. I began sharing my thoughts and experiences, connecting with readers, and turning my ideas into books.

My blog, RetiredKalam, became much more than a website. It became a platform for learning, expressing emotions, exchanging ideas, and building connections with people I might never meet personally.

Looking back, I realise that retirement was not the end of my productive life. It was the beginning of a new chapter.

My greatest goal was no longer to climb a professional ladder but to discover how much more I could learn, create, and contribute.

That experience taught me that personal goals are not reserved for young people. We can set new goals at any age, provided we remain curious and willing to begin.

One mistake we often make is setting goals that are too ambitious and expecting immediate results.

Suppose you want to write a book. The thought of completing hundreds of pages may seem overwhelming. But writing one page a day can gradually turn that dream into reality.

Similarly, improving your health might begin with a daily walk, while learning a new skill could require just fifteen minutes of practice.

In my creative journey, every blog post, sketch, painting, and book represented a series of small efforts. None of these activities required me to accomplish everything in a single day. They required me to return to my work, again and again.

As the saying goes, “Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.”

Consistency often matters more than occasional bursts of enthusiasm.

Does setting goals mean that everything will go according to plan? Certainly not!

Life brings unexpected challenges, changing responsibilities, disappointments, and sometimes circumstances beyond our control.

There may be days when we lack motivation or fail to achieve what we planned. We must learn to accept these moments without judging ourselves too harshly.

A missed target is not necessarily a failure. It may be an opportunity to reconsider our approach.

Our goals should guide us, not become chains that prevent us from enjoying life. Sometimes, changing direction is a sign of wisdom.

Remember, progress is not always a straight line. What matters is our willingness to learn, adapt, and continue.

We often measure success through money, possessions, professional achievements, and recognition. But are these the only things that make life worthwhile?

I believe our personal goals should also include maintaining good health, strengthening family relationships, developing meaningful friendships, helping others, and nurturing our inner peace.

For me, writing and painting offer opportunities to express myself, while learning and connecting with readers keep my mind active. These pursuits bring satisfaction beyond any numerical achievement.

We should also make room for gratitude, recreation, and quiet moments. Life is not merely a race towards tomorrow’s accomplishments.

A meaningful life is not just about achieving more; it is also about appreciating more.

My journey has taught me three valuable lessons.

First, it is never too late to begin. Age may change our pace, but it need not extinguish our curiosity.

Second, do not compare your journey with someone else’s. Every person has different circumstances, abilities, and priorities. Compete with the person you were yesterday, not with the person standing beside you.

Third, celebrate small victories. Completing a painting, publishing an article, learning something new, or helping someone through a difficult day can all be meaningful achievements.

We should not postpone happiness until we accomplish something extraordinary. There is joy in the effort itself.

Dear friends, personal goals are like stars that guide travellers through the darkness. They may not remove every obstacle, but they remind us where we want to go.

My own journey from banking to blogging, books, and art has taught me that every stage of life offers new possibilities. We may finish one chapter, but another is waiting to be written.

So, dream a little, plan thoughtfully, act consistently, and remain flexible when life takes an unexpected turn.

Above all, never believe that your best days must belong to your past.

Your next meaningful achievement may be waiting for you to take that first step.

Now, I would love to hear from you, dear friends.

Do you set personal goals for yourself? What is one goal you would like to achieve in the coming year?

Please share your thoughts in the comments. Your story might inspire someone else to begin a new chapter in their life.

Until we meet again, keep dreaming, keep learning, and keep moving forward with a smile!

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE
