# The Day I Truly Felt Alive #

Daily writing prompt
What’s a moment in your life that made you feel truly alive?

Hello, dear friends,

I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt question is very interesting, as I read:

“What’s a moment in your life that made you feel truly alive?”

When I asked myself this question, one moment immediately came back to me—the day I retired from the State Bank of India after more than three decades of service.

It was not merely my last working day.

It was the day one chapter of my life quietly closed, while another one was waiting for me to write it.

For 32 years, the bank had been an important part of my identity.

There had been busy branches, challenging assignments, colleagues, customers, targets, responsibilities, friendships, successes and setbacks. I had grown older inside those walls.

And then came the day when I had to walk out for the last time as a banker.

I remember the strange mixture of emotions.

There was happiness because a long professional journey had been completed. There was sadness because familiar faces and routines would no longer be part of my everyday life.

But beneath everything else was an unexpected feeling—a sense of freedom.

I suddenly realised:

“The next chapter of my life has no office timetable. I am the author now.”

That thought made my heart beat a little differently.

Many people think retirement means the end of a person’s productive life.

I discovered something completely different.

Retirement did not take life away from me.

It gave me time.

Time to walk without rushing.

Time to spend with family and friends.

Time to write.

Time to paint.

Time to learn swimming.

Time to pick up a camera and go on photo walks.

Time to sit quietly and listen to my own thoughts.

The calendar changed, but I had not become less alive.

In fact, I was beginning to discover parts of myself that had been waiting patiently behind professional responsibilities.

One of the most beautiful things about retirement has been discovering that we can continue becoming someone new.

I started writing more seriously. My pen became my companion. Then came painting, sketching, photography and many other interests.

Every new activity seemed to whisper:

“You are not finished. You are just beginning another version of yourself.”

That was an important lesson.

Age may change our body, our priorities and our pace, but it does not have to retire our curiosity.

Looking back, I don’t think I felt truly alive simply because I retired.

I felt alive because, for the first time in many years, I had the freedom to ask myself:

“What do I want to do with the life that remains?”

That question changed everything.

I realised that life is not only about earning a living. It is also about creating meaning.

  • A morning walk with friends can be meaningful.
  • A conversation with my wife can be meaningful.
  • A blank canvas can be meaningful.
  • Writing a few honest lines can be meaningful.
  • Helping someone can be meaningful.

Even sitting quietly with a cup of tea and watching the morning arrive can be meaningful.

Today, when I look back at that retirement day, I don’t see an ending.

I see a doorway.

I walked through it carrying memories of my banking career, but I also carried something far more valuable—the freedom to discover who I could become beyond my profession.

And perhaps that is why the moment remains so special.

“Sometimes, the closing of one door is not a goodbye. It is an invitation to finally open another.”

My defining moment was not the day I achieved the biggest professional success.

It was the day I realised that my life was bigger than my job.

Retirement taught me that we don’t stop living when one chapter ends.

We simply turn the page.

And I am still writing.

The pen is still in my hand.

The story is still unfolding.

And, most importantly, I am still here—still learning, still creating, still dreaming, and still feeling alive.

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE
