# Let Them Go #

A quiet reflection on loss, letting go, and the painful realization that when people leave, we must not leave ourselves behind. It is a poem about accepting departures, gathering our broken pieces, and finding the courage to begin again.

Let Them Go

Some people leave
without a reason.
Some leave
with a hundred reasons.

I used to stand by the door,
waiting for them to return,
wondering what I had done wrong.

But time has changed me.

Now, I let them go.

Not because it doesn’t hurt,
but because I have learned—
holding on
cannot make a heart stay.

I have lost people,
dreams,
and pieces of myself
along the way.

There were nights
when the silence
felt louder than words.

Yet, somehow,
I am still here—
wounded, perhaps,
but still breathing.

So I no longer ask,
“Why did they leave?”

I ask—

“Will I leave myself too?”

No.

This time,
I will gather my broken pieces,
forgive myself for loving too much,
and begin again.

Let them go.

Let the memories remain
where they belong.

Because when everyone leaves,
one person must stay—

and that person
must be me.

What remains is not emptiness.
What remains… is me.

  1. A deeply moving reflection on loss, acceptance, and the quiet courage to choose oneself again. The most powerful realization is that letting someone go does not mean letting ourselves go with them. Sometimes healing begins not when we find an answer to “Why did they leave?”, but when we gently ask, “Will I leave myself too?”

A beautiful reminder that after every departure, something precious still remains the self, waiting to be gathered, forgiven, and renewed. 🙏

    • Thank you so much for this thoughtful reflection. You’ve captured the heart of healing so beautifully. Indeed, letting someone go should never mean losing ourselves in the process. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is turn inward, gather the broken pieces, forgive ourselves, and begin again. 🙏

Your question, “Will I leave myself too?”, is especially powerful—it is perhaps the question we all need to ask when life takes someone away. ❤️

  3. The old adage “If you love it, set it free” applies here. Whether the loved one is a spouse, a child, a neighbour or a dear friend, we can not keep them locked close to us forever. If we are lucky they will come back for a visit or at least reach out to say Hi. We have many friends and neighbours who moved on to new locations. Some, we still connect with electronically or in person. Others we never hear from again. We reach out twice and if the communication is not reciprocated, we set them free. Happy Monday. Allan

    • Thank you, Allan. I completely agree. Love is not about holding on tightly; sometimes it is about giving people the freedom to choose their own path while keeping the door of affection open.

Some return, some stay connected from afar, and some quietly become part of our memories. Accepting that without bitterness is also a form of love.

  5. Beautiful, powerful poem, Vijay. The compassion and strength to let them go is needed, but its hard to do. It hurts so much, but its the right thing to do – to let them be free, despite the pain. And by letting them go perhaps we can also become stronger too. Wanting to keep them, stop them leaving is natural, but letting them go is kinder.

    • Thank you so much for your thoughtful and heartfelt words. You have beautifully captured the very essence of the poem.

Letting go is never easy, especially when the heart wants to hold on, but sometimes true love and compassion mean giving someone the freedom to choose their own path.

I’m glad the last paragraph touched you in that way. Sometimes leaving is not simply about walking away—it is about understanding when to let go with grace, acceptance, and love.
