Today’s writing prompt asks a wonderfully simple question:

“Share a hobby you’ve picked up recently — what got you into it?”

At first glance, it sounds like an ordinary question. But when I thought about it, I realised that a new hobby is rarely just a hobby. Sometimes, it is a new doorway into life—a way of discovering a side of ourselves that had been quietly waiting to emerge.

❤️Retirement: Not an Ending, but a Beginning

For many of us, retirement can feel like the closing of an important chapter. After decades of work, meetings, deadlines and responsibilities, suddenly the calendar becomes surprisingly empty.

But I gradually learned an important lesson:

“Retirement is not the end of the road; it is the beginning of the open highway.”

I decided that I didn’t want my retirement years to be defined by the absence of work. I wanted them to be filled with curiosity, creativity and purpose.

That is when I began exploring several activities that I had either ignored or never had enough time for during my working years.

❤️When My Pen Met My Paintbrush

Writing had already become an important part of my life. My blog gave me a place to share experiences, thoughts, memories and reflections.

But then something else happened.

I picked up a paintbrush.

Painting and sketching gradually became a fascinating new hobby. Initially, I didn’t think of myself as an artist. I simply wanted to experiment—to put an idea on paper and see what happened.

Sometimes the result was satisfying.

Sometimes it was… well, let’s politely call it an experiment! 😊

But I discovered that the joy was not necessarily in creating a perfect picture. The joy was in the process.

“Art does not have to be perfect. It only has to be honest.”

❤️Why Did I Take It Up?

Perhaps the real reason was curiosity.

As we grow older, we often become experts at many things, but we sometimes lose the beginner’s mindset—the excitement of doing something without worrying about whether we are good at it.

A new hobby brings that feeling back.

When I sit down with a pencil or brush, I am not a retired banker. I am simply a learner again.

And there is something wonderfully liberating about being a beginner.

There are no deadlines. No performance reviews. No competition.

Just me, the paper, the colours—and a little imagination.

❤️A Hobby Is More Than Passing Time

I have come to believe that hobbies are not merely ways of keeping ourselves busy.

They nourish the mind.

They encourage creativity.

They reduce stress.

They give us something to look forward to.

Most importantly, they remind us that we are still capable of learning and growing at every age.

As George Bernard Shaw famously said:

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

A hobby brings back that childlike sense of exploration.

❤️The Beautiful Surprise

The most beautiful thing about picking up a new hobby is that we never quite know where it will lead.

A simple sketch can become a painting.

A painting can become a story.

A story can become a poem.

And a hobby can eventually become a meaningful part of one’s identity.

That is what makes learning something new so exciting.

❤️Never Stop Discovering

Today, I believe age should never be an excuse for stopping curiosity.

Whether it is painting, gardening, photography, music, dancing, cooking, writing, learning a language or simply walking in nature—there is always something waiting to be discovered.

So, if you have been thinking about starting a new hobby, don’t wait for the “perfect time.”

• Start small.
• Pick up that brush.
• Open that book.
• Learn that song.
• Plant that seed.
• Write that first sentence.

Because sometimes, a new hobby doesn’t simply add something to our life—it reveals something that was already within us.

“Every new hobby is a small adventure, and every adventure begins with the courage to try.”

And perhaps that is the greatest gift of growing older:

We finally have the freedom to discover who we are beyond our responsibilities.
