# The Best Piece of Advice I’ve Ever Received….

“The journey of life becomes meaningful not by the years we live, but by the lessons we learn.”
Daily writing prompt
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Hello dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt poses a thoughtful question:

“What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?”

At first glance, it appears to be a simple question. But the more I reflected on it, the more I realised how deeply our lives are shaped by the words we hear and choose to follow.

Throughout our lives, we receive advice from parents, teachers, friends, mentors, books, and even strangers. Some words are forgotten within days, while others quietly become our lifelong companions.

They influence our decisions, strengthen us during difficult times, and remind us of our true purpose.

After much reflection, one piece of advice stands above all the rest:

“Keep moving forward. Never stop learning, and never stop living with purpose.”

These simple words have become the guiding principle of my life.

During my 32 years in the banking profession, life followed a familiar routine—meeting customers, achieving targets, solving problems, and fulfilling responsibilities. Like many professionals, I once believed retirement marked the end of an active life.

How wrong I was!

Retirement was not the closing chapter; it became the beginning of a brand-new story.

Instead of asking, “What have I lost?” I started asking, “What can I still create?”

That one change in perspective opened countless new doors.

“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.”Mahatma Gandhi

Inspired by that timeless wisdom, I began exploring interests that had patiently waited for years.

I started writing blogs and poetry, rediscovered my passion for sketching and painting, embraced yoga and meditation, enjoyed morning walks, and continued playing table tennis. Each new activity reminded me that age is never a barrier to curiosity.

Life itself became my classroom once again.

The greatest discovery was this:

We are never too old to become beginners.

Another valuable lesson hidden within that advice is the importance of consistency.

Many of us postpone our dreams while waiting for the “perfect” time.

“I’ll write when I have more free time.”

“I’ll exercise from next Monday.”

“I’ll travel after all my responsibilities are over.”

But life has taught me that perfect moments rarely arrive.

“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”Lao Tzu

One blog written today is better than a book planned forever.

One walk taken today is better than a fitness plan left untouched.

One painting completed today is better than a canvas waiting for inspiration.

Progress, however small, always defeats procrastination.

One beautiful truth I have discovered is that wisdom does not come only from success.

Sometimes our greatest teachers are failures, disappointments, and unexpected challenges.

Instead of asking,

“Why did this happen to me?”

I now try to ask,

“What is this experience trying to teach me?”

That simple question transforms obstacles into opportunities.

As the saying goes,

“Turn your wounds into wisdom.”Oprah Winfrey

Every setback carries within it the seed of growth, if only we are willing to learn.

As the years have passed, I have realised that achievements alone do not define a person.

Titles fade.

Positions change.

Material possessions come and go.

But kindness, honesty, humility, and compassion remain our greatest wealth.

Whenever younger people seek my advice, I encourage them not only to pursue success but also to protect their health, nurture relationships, remain financially disciplined, and continue learning throughout life.

Because,

“Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get.”Dale Carnegie

If I could offer just one piece of advice to the next generation, it would simply be this:

Keep learning. Keep creating. Keep serving. Keep smiling. And never stop moving forward.

Dreams have no retirement age.

Purpose never grows old.

Every sunrise offers another opportunity to become a better version of ourselves.

Life is not measured by the number of years we live but by the number of lives we touch, lessons we learn, and moments we cherish.

The best advice I’ve ever received continues to guide me every single day:

“Keep moving forward. Never stop learning, and never stop living with purpose.”

It has helped me transform retirement into renewal, routine into creativity, and ordinary days into meaningful ones.

Now I’d love to hear from you.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Please share your thoughts in the comments. Your words may become the inspiration someone else needs today.

“The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is now.”Chinese Proverb

Until next time, stay healthy, stay curious, and keep moving forward—one meaningful step at a time.

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE

    • Thank you so much for your kind words. Sometimes the simplest advice carries the deepest wisdom, but the real challenge is having the humility to recognize it and the courage to follow it. I’m grateful I listened—and perhaps still learning to do so every day. 😊🙏

  3. Dear Verma ji,

What a profound and beautifully written reflection! Your journey from a 32-year banking career to discovering renewed purpose in retirement is truly inspiring. The way you’ve embraced learning, creativity, and self-discovery at every stage of life is a powerful reminder that our best chapters are often written after we think the story is over.

Your words resonate deeply—especially the realization that “we are never too old to become beginners.” In a world that often celebrates youth and speed, your perspective is a gentle and much-needed reminder that curiosity, growth, and purpose have no expiration date.

I was particularly moved by how you reframed challenges as teachers and turned obstacles into opportunities. That shift from “Why did this happen to me?” to “What is this trying to teach me?” is wisdom that can transform lives.

Thank you for sharing this piece of your heart with us. You are not just living with purpose—you are inspiring others to do the same. Your story is proof that life doesn’t slow down after retirement; it simply changes pace, allowing us to savor what truly matters.

Keep writing, keep painting, keep moving forward. The world needs more voices like yours.

    With gratitude and respect,

    • Thank you sincerely for such a thoughtful and generous message. Your words touched me deeply, especially because they capture something I have gradually come to understand: retirement is not the end of the journey; it is simply the beginning of a different and, in many ways, richer chapter.

I’m grateful that my experiences have resonated with you. Writing, painting, learning, and trying new things have taught me that age may change our pace, but it need not diminish our curiosity or our dreams. Indeed, being a beginner again can be one of life’s greatest joys.
