Three Promises I Made to Myself.
Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.
Today’s writing prompt made me pause and reflect:
“What’s a promise you made to yourself that you’ve actually kept?”
As I looked back on my life’s journey, I realized that I didn’t keep just one promise — I kept three.
These promises have quietly transformed my retirement into one of the most fulfilling chapters of my life.
They didn’t require extraordinary talent or great wealth. They only required consistency, discipline, and the willingness to become a little better every day.
Let me share these three promises with you.
Promise No. 1: I Will Never Retire from Life
When I retired from my career in banking after more than three decades of service, many people asked, “Now what will you do with so much free time?”
My answer was simple.
I retired from my job, not from my life.
I promised myself that retirement would never mean inactivity. Instead, it would be the beginning of a new journey—a journey filled with learning, creativity, and personal growth.

That promise changed everything.
I embraced writing with renewed passion. Blogging became more than a hobby; it became a way of connecting with people across the world.
Every article gave me an opportunity to learn, reflect, and inspire.
At the same time, I rekindled my childhood love for sketching and painting. Every blank canvas reminded me that life itself is a masterpiece in progress. Every stroke of the pencil taught me patience, and every completed sketch gave me immense satisfaction.
I also welcomed new technologies instead of fearing them. Artificial Intelligence, digital tools, and online platforms became companions in my learning journey.
One lesson became crystal clear:
The day we stop learning is the day we begin growing old—not by age, but by attitude.
Promise No. 2: I Will Never Waste My Time
Time is the most valuable resource we possess.
Money lost can often be earned again. Opportunities may return. Material possessions can be replaced.
But time?
Once it slips through our fingers, it is gone forever.
We live in an age where distractions are only a tap away. Endless scrolling through social media, watching meaningless videos, or engaging in unproductive conversations can quietly consume hours without adding value to our lives.

I made a conscious promise to myself:
I will spend my time intentionally, not accidentally.
That doesn’t mean every minute must be filled with work. Leisure is important too. But there is a difference between relaxing and simply wasting precious hours.
Instead of allowing time to disappear, I chose to invest it wisely.
- I read meaningful books that broaden my thinking.
- I write blogs that allow me to share experiences.
- I learn new ideas and technologies that keep my mind active.
- I pursue creative hobbies that nourish my soul.
Each small investment compounds over time, just like interest in a savings account.
As a former banker, I often smile at this comparison: Time is life’s greatest investment portfolio. Every hour invested wisely earns dividends in knowledge, health, relationships, and happiness.
If we respect time, time eventually rewards us.

Promise No. 3: I Will Take Care of My Health
Health is the silent foundation upon which every dream is built.
Without good health, success loses much of its meaning.
Many people spend their youth sacrificing their health to earn wealth, only to spend their later years sacrificing their wealth to regain their health.
I wanted to avoid that mistake.
So I made another promise:
My health will always remain one of my highest priorities.
Health is not maintained through occasional effort but through daily habits.
A simple morning routine can transform our lives.
- Walking.
- Swimming.
- Yoga.
- Meditation.
- Regular exercise.
- Balanced food.
- Adequate sleep.
These habits may appear small individually, but together they create extraordinary results.
Physical fitness gives us strength.
Meditation brings mental peace.
Exercise improves confidence.
Good health allows us to enjoy our family, pursue our passions, and face life’s challenges with resilience.
As I often remind myself,
Health is not an expense—it is the best investment we can ever make.

The Power of Keeping Small Promises
People often believe that success comes from one grand decision.
I have learned something different.
Success is built through thousands of small promises kept consistently.
One more page read.
One more walk completed.
One more blog written.
One more sketch finished.
One more day of discipline.
These seemingly ordinary actions create an extraordinary life.
Life doesn’t demand perfection.
It rewards consistency.

A Promise to Yourself Is Sacred
The promises we make to others are important because they build trust.
But the promises we make to ourselves shape our character.
Every time we honour a personal commitment, our confidence grows.
Every time we break one, our self-belief weakens.
That is why even the smallest promise deserves respect.
Today, when I look back, I feel deeply grateful that I stayed true to these three simple commitments:
- Never retire from learning and growing.
- Never waste the precious gift of time.
- Never neglect your health.
These promises have filled my retirement with purpose, joy, creativity, and gratitude.
They remind me that life does not become meaningful because of our age; it becomes meaningful because of our attitude.
Dear friends, what promise have you made to yourself that has changed your life?
I’d love to read your story in the comments. Your experience may become the inspiration someone else needs to begin their own journey of self-improvement.
Remember: The greatest promises are not those spoken aloud—they are the ones quietly honoured every single day.

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE
If this post inspired you, show some love! 💙

Dear Verma Ji,
Your words have touched me deeply today. Reading about your three promises felt like sitting across from a wise friend, sharing tea and life lessons that only experience can teach.
What strikes me most is not the grandness of your promises, but their beautiful simplicity. You didn’t vow to climb mountains or write bestselling books. Instead, you chose to honour the quiet, ordinary moments—the daily walk, the blank canvas, the intentional hour—and through them, you built something extraordinary.
The comparison that resonated with me most was your reflection on time as “life’s greatest investment portfolio.” It’s true—every moment we invest wisely does indeed pay compound interest in ways we cannot always measure but always feel.
Your words about never retiring from life have given me much to ponder. In a world that often treats retirement as an ending, you have reframed it as a magnificent beginning. That perspective shift is itself a gift to everyone who reads your words.
But perhaps what moved me most was your reminder that health is the “silent foundation upon which every dream is built.” How easily we forget this until the foundation cracks. Your discipline in maintaining daily habits—walking, swimming, yoga, meditation—speaks not just of wisdom but of deep self-respect.
Thank you for sharing these promises with us. Thank you for showing that a meaningful life isn’t built through one grand gesture, but through thousands of small, consistent acts of love toward ourselves and our growth.
You have inspired me to examine my own promises more carefully—not the ones I speak aloud, but the ones I quietly honour each day.
With gratitude and respect,
Srikanth

I love your life-affirming attitude: Absolutely no retirement! We can end jobs, careers, hobbies, relationships but not growing, learning, seeking, becoming. The only time for retirement is when we’re six feet under, right? I’m with you, Sir V. Go, grow, and glow always!

Thank you so much for your wonderful encouragement! I couldn’t agree more—retirement should only mark the end of a profession, never the end of curiosity, growth, or purpose. As long as we are blessed with life, there is always something new to learn, create, and share. Your words, “Go, grow, and glow,” beautifully capture the spirit I hope to live by.
Thank you for walking alongside me on this journey. Wishing you the same joy of growing and glowing every single day! 🙏

I like these 3 promises. Retirement is not the end, it is a new beginning, giving us all a chance to do what we want to do, rather than what the job demands. As to Not Wasting Time, we all need to have some times where we are just SDN (Sittin’ Doin’ Nuthin”). This might be resting, meditating or just staring off into space. SDN is not necessarily wasting time. Looking after our health is the best gift we can give ourselves and those who love us. Being retired and having time is nothing without good physical and mental health. Have a wonderful day. Allan

Thank you, Allan, for your thoughtful and insightful comment. I especially enjoyed your idea of SDN (Sittin’ Doin’ Nuthin’)! 😊 You’re absolutely right—quiet moments of rest, reflection, or simply enjoying the present are not wasted time; they are often when we recharge and gain clarity.
Retirement truly gives us the freedom to choose how we spend our days, and good health allows us to enjoy that freedom fully. Thank you for adding such a valuable perspective to the conversation. Wishing you a wonderful day filled with peace, good health, and many meaningful SDN

The three promises are so simple and yet so effective. I wish that younger people read your promises and get inspired by it, to start such things earlier in life.

What a wonderful and motivating post! Verma, your promises are not just inspiring but very wise.
I especially love how you prioritize your time. Our modern world is very overwhelming and rich with distractions of all kinds. Remaining focused, productive, and intentional can feel like climbing Mt.Everest—a difficult task!
However, it can be done :D. I really want to be intentional with my digital use so that I can savor the time I have.

Thank you so much for your kind and encouraging words. They truly touched my heart.
You have beautifully captured the challenge of our times. The digital world offers incredible opportunities, but it also competes for our attention every single day. Choosing to be intentional with our time is indeed like climbing a mountain—it takes patience, discipline, and the willingness to keep moving forward, one step at a time.
I love your thought about wanting to savor the time you have. That, to me, is the real essence of mindful living.
