# Divine Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath #

A Memorable Journey to Lord Jagannath

Dear friends,

Today, millions of devotees across India and around the world celebrate the magnificent Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, one of the grandest and most spiritually significant festivals in Hinduism.

It is widely believed that even a glimpse of Lord Jagannath’s chariot during the Rath Yatra brings divine blessings and removes obstacles from a devotee’s life.

On this sacred occasion, I would like to share one of my most cherished travel memories—a visit to Jagannath Puri nearly four decades ago—and some fascinating traditions associated with this extraordinary temple.

The incident dates back to my college days when I was studying Agriculture. Our college organized an educational tour to North India, and since the world-renowned Central Rice Research Institute (now ICAR-NRRI) is located in Cuttack, Odisha, our itinerary included a visit there.

Realizing that the famous pilgrimage town of Puri and the magnificent Konark Sun Temple were nearby, our group eagerly planned to visit both places.

We were a group of forty enthusiastic students. Early one morning, our train reached Puri Railway Station. Little did we know that our journey would become one of the most memorable experiences of our lives.

As soon as we stepped onto the platform, numerous temple priests, popularly known as Pandas, welcomed us.

The first question each of them asked was surprisingly simple:

“What is your village? What is your father’s or grandfather’s name?”

The moment we answered, they began narrating details about our family lineage that left us absolutely speechless.

Remember, this happened nearly forty years ago—long before computers, mobile phones, or the internet. We wondered how they possessed such detailed information. Perhaps their traditional record-keeping and communication network had been perfected over centuries.

Each Panda represented a specific geographical region. Based on our district and village, we were guided to the priest responsible for our area. They also offered accommodation, meals, and complete assistance to pilgrims.

Unfortunately, not everything was pleasant. A few of our friends declined their services, which upset some of the Pandas. Their persistence occasionally turned into unpleasant arguments. Witnessing such behaviour in a sacred city was disappointing. Nevertheless, we proceeded to the temple with faith in our hearts.

Inside the temple, we performed our prayers and received valuable information about its history and traditions.

Lord Jagannath is worshipped as a form of Lord Krishna, the complete incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The city derives its very name from Him—Jagannath Puri.

According to ancient scriptures, the temple was established by King Indradyumna of Malwa, who was divinely instructed in a dream to locate the sacred idol hidden in the Nilachal Hills and build a magnificent temple for its worship.

Every year during the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July), the spectacular Rath Yatra is celebrated. During this festival, Lord Jagannath, His elder brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra are placed on three beautifully decorated wooden chariots and taken through the streets of Puri.

It is believed that participating in pulling these gigantic chariots brings immense spiritual merit equivalent to performing many sacred rituals.

One popular legend says that Goddess Subhadra once expressed her desire to see the city. To fulfill her wish, Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra accompanied her on a grand chariot ride. This divine journey is commemorated every year as the Rath Yatra.

The festival lasts for about ten days and attracts millions of pilgrims from every corner of the world.

The Jagannath Temple is surrounded by numerous fascinating traditions and mysteries that continue to amaze visitors.

One of the most sacred rituals is the Nabakalebara, performed approximately every twelve years, when the wooden idols are ceremonially replaced.

According to temple tradition, during this sacred ceremony, a mysterious and highly revered element known as the “Brahma Padartha” is transferred from the old idols to the new ones. The entire ritual is performed under strict secrecy by designated priests in complete darkness. The exact nature of this sacred element has never been publicly disclosed by the temple authorities, making it one of India’s most enduring spiritual mysteries.

Another remarkable tradition is the Chhera Pahanra, where the Gajapati King of Puri sweeps the chariots with a golden broom before the procession begins. This symbolizes that everyone is equal before the Lord, irrespective of status or power.

Several unique characteristics of the Jagannath Temple continue to intrigue devotees and visitors alike.

Many people observe that the sound of the sea becomes significantly less noticeable immediately after entering through the temple’s main Lion Gate (Singha Dwara), despite the temple being located close to the shoreline.

The temple kitchen is considered one of the largest in the world. Prasadam is traditionally prepared in earthen pots stacked one above another over wood-fired ovens. Devotees believe that the uppermost pot cooks first—an age-old tradition that continues to inspire wonder.

Another remarkable aspect is that thousands of devotees are fed every day, yet the Mahaprasad is traditionally regarded as never being insufficient, and very little food is left once the temple closes.

Over the centuries, many stories have also circulated about the temple’s flag, the Sudarshan Chakra, and other architectural features. While some are matters of faith and local tradition rather than established historical fact, they undoubtedly add to the temple’s aura of mystery and devotion.

Our visit concluded with the divine Mahaprasad and the blessings of Lord Jagannath. Although many years have passed since that memorable journey, its memories remain fresh in my heart.

Jagannath Puri is far more than a tourist destination. It is a place where history, spirituality, culture, devotion, and centuries-old traditions blend into an unforgettable experience.

Whether one visits as a pilgrim, a traveller, or simply a seeker of knowledge, Lord Jagannath’s sacred abode leaves an everlasting impression on the soul.

As the divine chariots roll once again through the streets of Puri, may Lord Jagannath shower His blessings upon all of us with peace, happiness, good health, and prosperity. Jai Jagannath.

  1. God did not walk you through every storm every heartbreak and every season of alone just to leave you empty handed. Everything you survived was not punishment — it was preparation. And what He is preparing you for is so much greater than what you are grieving right now. 💙 #GodPsychology #LovePsychology #Faith #Healing #DivineTiming

  8. What a fine recounting of your spiritual journey. I am sure the Pandas’ insights were surprising in the day and while some pilgims were receptive to the spiritual attention, still others were not ready and shunned it, thus offending the Pandas. Such is the way of life. In some regards, the Pandas should have expected this and adjusted their approach, to help the reluctant pilgrims feel more comfortable. Thanks for sharing. Allan

    • Thank you so much, Allan, for your thoughtful and balanced reflection.

You’re absolutely right. Looking back after so many years, I can understand both perspectives. The Pandas were following a centuries-old tradition of serving pilgrims, but as you rightly pointed out, not every visitor is comfortable with the same approach. A little more patience and sensitivity could certainly have made the experience more welcoming for those who were hesitant.

  9. Verma ji,

What a profoundly moving and beautifully written account! 🙏

Your journey to Jagannath Puri is not just a travelogue—it is a heartfelt pilgrimage that bridges the divine with the deeply personal. I was particularly struck by your vivid description of the Pandas and their astonishing knowledge of family lineages, which feels almost mystical in today’s digital age. It truly speaks to the power of oral tradition and the intricate, centuries-old networks of faith.

Your reflections on the temple’s mysteries—from the silent sea at the Lion Gate to the sacred Brahma Padartha—reminded me that some truths are best felt in the heart rather than understood by the mind. And your closing words, about how the journey left an “everlasting impression on the soul,” resonate deeply.

Thank you for sharing this timeless memory. It has not only enriched my understanding of the Rath Yatra but also rekindled a sense of wonder about the spiritual fabric of India.

May Lord Jagannath continue to guide your path with peace and blessings.

    Jai Jagannath! 🙏
