Daily writing prompt
What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?

Hello dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood and vibrant health. Today’s writing prompt truly resonates with me: “What strategies do you use to maintain your health and well-being?”

Over the years, especially after retirement, this question has become not just relevant but central to how I live my life each day.

Maintaining health and well-being is no longer about mere survival—it’s about living a life filled with purpose, vitality, and joy.

After decades in the banking world where stress, deadlines, and structure ruled my days, I now enjoy a different kind of discipline—one rooted in self-care and creativity.

Let me walk you through the strategies I use daily to nurture my mind, body, and spirit:

Retirement does not mean abandoning discipline; it means realigning it. I begin my day early, often before sunrise, embracing the stillness of morning.

This is my sacred time—to reflect, meditate, write, or simply sip herbal tea while watching the world slowly awaken.

Having a routine helps me feel grounded, but I also make time for spontaneity—like a surprise dance to soulful music or a sudden urge to paint the sky. This mix of structure and freedom boosts my creativity and peace of mind.

As they say, “The food you eat can either be the safest and most powerful form of medicine, or the slowest form of poison.” I’ve taken this to heart.

My meals are simple, seasonal, and full of natural ingredients. I start my day with soaked almonds, ginger tea, and fruit. I avoid processed food and heavy dinners, preferring light sabzi, dal, and a bowl of curd.

Garlic, turmeric, and green vegetables are staples in my kitchen—not just for taste, but for their powerful health benefits.

After struggling with thyroid issues, I’ve learned how much food can influence energy, mood, and metabolism.

I am a firm believer in the phrase “motion is lotion.” Walking, stretching, and light yoga are part of my daily ritual. On more energetic days, I go kayaking or dance with my beloved to our favourite old Bollywood tunes.

Exercise not only strengthens the body but also clears the fog from the mind. Even a 30-minute brisk walk in nature can transform my entire day.

I also practice breathing exercises (pranayama), which have worked wonders for my thyroid and mental clarity.

Writing, painting, and composing videos are not just hobbies for me—they are lifelines. Through art, I connect with myself and others.

Creative expression keeps the mind agile, boosts self-esteem, and brings immense satisfaction.

Some days, when I feel low, I pick up a brush or write a few lines of poetry. Slowly, the fog lifts, and I am reminded of the beauty that still exists in this world—and within me.

Health is not just physical—it is emotional and social too. I make it a point to connect with friends and family, whether through a quick phone call, a tea-time gathering, or an evening of storytelling with my granddaughter.

Laughter is a magical medicine. I often watch comedy shows or crack silly jokes just to see my wife roll her eyes and smile. That spark of joy is healing in itself.

Meditation, gratitude journaling, and quiet reflection are the cornerstones of my spiritual well-being.

I read a few verses from the Bhagavad Gita or simply sit in silence, surrendering my worries to a higher power.

In this chaotic world, spiritual grounding reminds me of what truly matters—kindness, compassion, and the courage to keep going.

Whether it’s reading new books, learning about nutrition, or watching documentaries on brain health, I believe curiosity keeps us young.

I take great pleasure in researching topics like garlic’s health benefits or the mysteries of the thyroid.

Engaging my brain with new knowledge keeps my memory sharp and makes me feel alive and purposeful.

Maintaining health and well-being is not a single act—it’s a lifestyle, a mindset, a daily promise we make to ourselves. It is not about perfection, but intention.

Each day, I choose to care for this precious body and mind—through mindful eating, joyful movement, deep connections, and creative expression. As I grow older, I realize that aging is inevitable, but how we age is in our hands.

So, dear reader, I ask you today—what is your strategy to care for yourself?

Let us all strive to live with health, grace, and purpose. Because every breath, every moment, is a gift waiting to be cherished.

Warm regards,
Vijay Verma

  1. How does your routine change while traveling?

    • Ah, what a thoughtful question!

While traveling, my routine becomes more fluid, but the essence of it remains intact. I may not have the same surroundings or schedule, but I carry with me a “portable rhythm” that keeps me grounded.

Mornings still begin with a quiet moment—whether it’s watching the sunrise from a hotel balcony or sipping herbal tea on a hillside. I adjust my movement routine to the setting—perhaps a nature walk, light stretching in the room, or even a spontaneous dance with joy in the rain!

Meals become more exploratory but still mindful. I try local delicacies while balancing them with fresh fruits or lighter options. Journaling, sketching, and capturing thoughts on the go replace my formal writing space. And of course, meaningful conversations with new people often become the highlight of the day.

Travel, for me, doesn’t disrupt well-being—it enhances it. It’s a beautiful reminder that health is not just in habits, but in how we adapt them with grace.

Your comment feels like a warm embrace—gently affirming the journey I’ve taken toward mindful living.
Indeed, aging with awareness is less about counting the years and more about making each moment count.
When small rituals are infused with love and intention, they become sacred offerings to life itself.

I’m humbled that you resonated with the blend of “turmeric and tenderness” and “pranayama and
playfulness”—that poetic fusion truly captures the essence I strive for each day. 🌿
