My Favourite Star: Rajesh Khanna
Hello, my friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood. Today, I want to share my admiration for one of the most iconic stars of Indian cinema—Rajesh Khanna.
My fascination with him is not just because of his immense success but also due to the dramatic twists and turns in his life. His journey, from superstardom to a tragic decline, reads like a poignant screenplay.
Let’s explore some lesser-known facts about this enigmatic star, touching upon his career, personal life, and untimely end.
Career Journey: A Rise Like No Other
Born as Jatin Khanna, he was later renamed Rajesh Khanna by his maternal uncle, believing it would suit the glamour of Bollywood. Rajesh Khanna’s rise to fame was meteoric.
Often referred to as the “First Superstar” of Indian cinema, he delivered 15 consecutive solo hits between 1969 and 1972—a record that remains unbeaten.
His performances in movies like Aradhana, Anand, Kati Patang, and Bawarchi earned him not only awards but also a permanent place in the hearts of millions.
He was the heartthrob of the nation, and women famously wrote love letters to him in blood.
However, success did not last forever. With the emergence of new stars, his career began to decline, leaving him struggling to reclaim his former glory.

Personal Life: A Tale of Love and Heartbreak
Rajesh Khanna’s personal life was as dramatic as his on-screen roles. He was deeply in love with actress Anju Mahendru and even gifted her a bungalow named Palm Breeze.
Interestingly, after their breakup, he never asked her to vacate it, and she continues to live there.
Later, he married Dimple Kapadia, an aspiring actress, in what many believed was a decision driven by superstition. Despite their marriage, their relationship faced many challenges, leading to separation, though they never divorced.
He was also romantically linked with actress Tina Munim. According to some reports, the two were so close that they even shared the same toothbrush—a claim that added to his mystique.

Quirks and Beliefs: The Superstitious Superstar
Rajesh Khanna was known for his eccentricities and superstitions. He bought the bungalow Dimple, owned by actor Rajendra Kumar, and renamed it Aashirwad after his father’s suggestion.
Ironically, while Khanna’s career started to wane after this purchase, Rajendra Kumar’s career had already taken a downturn.
Stories also suggest that he believed Dimple Kapadia’s name was lucky, influencing his decision to marry her.
An Enigmatic Legacy
There’s also debate about his birthplace. While Indians claim he was born in Gali Tiwariyan, Amritsar, and later donated the property to a temple, Pakistanis assert that he was born in Burewala, where his father served as a headmaster in a local school.
Despite such controversies, he remained an enigma, a superstar who captivated audiences with his charm and acting prowess.
Humility Amidst Stardom
One story that highlights his humility is from the shooting of the movie Avatar. While staying at an inn near the Vaishno Devi shrine, he stood in line with common pilgrims to use the public toilet, showing his down-to-earth nature.

The Tragic End
Despite his immense fame, Rajesh Khanna’s later years were marked by loneliness and fading stardom.
He battled health issues and passed away in 2012, leaving his fans heartbroken. His life remains an inspiring yet cautionary tale about the transient nature of success and the importance of relationships.
Final Thoughts
Rajesh Khanna’s life was a blend of glamour, love, superstition, and tragedy. He lived like a king and fell like a star, but his legacy continues to shine brightly.
His contributions to Indian cinema remain unparalleled, and his story will always inspire generations.
Let’s remember him not just for his stardom but for his resilience, passion, and unforgettable performances.
