The Power of Storytelling

Dear friends,

Storytelling is a craft I deeply cherish, a passion that flows through my veins. Some people say, “Storytelling is nothing more than making up tales,” but I disagree.

As I’ve read, a story is a narrative or account of events, real or imagined, that is designed to entertain, inform, or convey a message.

It involves characters, settings, plots, and challenges that come together to form a resolution. Through these mediums—whether written, spoken, visual, or artistic—stories evoke emotions, share experiences, and communicate morals that can leave an indelible impact on the listener or reader.

In today’s storytelling session, let me share an interesting tale that perfectly embodies the wisdom, determination, and the strength of a woman.

Once upon a time, there lived a wealthy man who married an intelligent woman named Sumati. Sumati was wise, well-read, and quick-witted, qualities that often led to her winning arguments and debates with her husband.

The husband, though wealthy and accomplished, found himself irked by the fact that he couldn’t outwit his wife.

One day, Sumati made a bold statement: “Women are in no way inferior to men.” Her husband, perhaps wanting to put her claim to the test, issued a challenge.

He said, “I am leaving for a two-year trip abroad. During my absence, if you can build a grand palace, run a profitable business, and bear a child, I will accept that women are truly equal to men.

Not only that, but I’ll also acknowledge your brilliance and wisdom.”

With this daring challenge, the husband departed the next morning, leaving Sumati to face the task on her own.

However, Sumati was unfazed. Her keen intellect and unwavering confidence led her to take immediate charge.

Sumati started by instilling a sense of honesty and hard work among her husband’s employees. She motivated them with a promise of double wages if they performed diligently.

Under her sharp leadership, the workers began working with renewed enthusiasm, and before long, the business was thriving. Profits soared to levels even beyond her husband’s expectations.

With the wealth generated from the booming business, Sumati commissioned the construction of a magnificent palace. The palace, with its intricate architecture and dazzling beauty, became the talk of the town.

It was so grand that its splendor could be seen from miles away. Two tasks—running a successful business and building a palace—had now been accomplished, but one task still remained: bearing a child.

Wisdom in the Tale of Sumati

Sumati, being virtuous, wasn’t willing to compromise her moral values by engaging with another man to fulfill this challenge. She pondered deeply, seeking a solution that would uphold her integrity. After much thought, an idea struck her.

Sumati decided to nurture cows, a resource she already had. She tended to the cows with great care, and soon, they began producing an abundance of milk.

With this surplus, she started exporting dairy products such as ghee, curd, and butter to foreign countries. Her business expanded even further, and Sumati’s travels to these countries became frequent.

It was during one of these trips that Sumati spotted her husband sitting in a park. Instead of approaching him as herself, she decided to surprise him.

Disguised as a poor milkmaid, she approached him. Her husband did not recognize her and, curious about her appearance, asked what she did for a living.

“I sell milk, curd, and butter,” Sumati replied humbly.

Intrigued, her husband requested that she deliver dairy products to his residence regularly. This led to daily interactions, and soon, Sumati—still in disguise—grew closer to her husband.

Over time, their bond deepened, and they developed a relationship. Sumati, still under her assumed identity, seduced her husband. They had relations multiple times, and Sumati cleverly secured a ring from him as a keepsake.

With the third task accomplished, Sumati returned home and, in due time, gave birth to a child.

Two years passed, and her husband finally returned home. He was astounded by the grandeur of the palace and the success of the business. Everything seemed to be in perfect order. However, his joy turned to fury when he saw a child in Sumati’s arms.

Whose child is this?” he thundered, his face flushed with anger.

Sumati, calm and collected, reminded him of the milkmaid he had met abroad. She showed him the ring he had given her during their encounter.

As the realization dawned on him, her husband stood there, speechless and bewildered.

Sumati then asked, “If that milkmaid had been someone else and not me, what would you have done?”

Her husband had no answer to this. Silence filled the room as he processed the gravity of her question.

Sumati smiled gently and said, “Women are not just equals; they are the protectors of family honor, the Lakshmi of the household, and the ones who elevate men to greatness.”

Humbled by her wisdom and cleverness, her husband could only nod in agreement.

Friends, this story illustrates not just the power of intelligence but also the value of integrity, resourcefulness, and determination. Sumati’s wit, paired with her unwavering morals, led her to succeed in all three challenges.

Women, like men, have the strength to overcome any obstacles and, in many cases, possess the wisdom to elevate those around them.

I hope you enjoyed this tale and that it reminds us all of the remarkable strength and resilience found in every individual, regardless of gender.

Keep believing in the power of storytelling—it carries wisdom, inspires change, and brings people together.
