A Path Beyond Maya
Friends,
Today is Janmashtami, a festival that fills our hearts with joy as we celebrate the birth (Janma) of Lord Krishna on the eighth (Ashtami) day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (August–September).
The significance of the number eight in Krishna’s life is profound — He is not only born on the eighth day but is also the eighth child of His mother, Devaki.
Janmashtami is a day of deep devotion and fasting, where devotees eagerly await the midnight hour to welcome Krishna into their hearts.
On this sacred day, colors play a symbolic role, with different hues representing various aspects of Krishna’s divine personality.
However, the most important offering we can make is not in the color of our clothes but in the purity of our faith and devotion towards Lord Krishna.
Krishna-Consciousness: Living in Divine Remembrance
What does it mean to be Krishna-conscious? Simply put, it means to think of Krishna at every moment and to remember Him in every situation. Whether you are happy, sad, or angry, Krishna should be at the forefront of your mind:
- In happiness, thank Krishna for the joy He has bestowed upon you.
- In sadness, pray to Krishna to lift your spirits and guide you through the storm.
- In anger, ask Krishna to calm your mind so that you may act with wisdom and compassion.
In our fast-paced world, where distractions abound and material desires tempt us at every turn, maintaining Krishna-consciousness is indeed a challenge.
The illusion of Maya, which lures us into the temporary pleasures of this world, is a powerful force. But Krishna-consciousness is our greatest weapon against Maya—it is the shield that protects our soul from being entangled in the web of illusion.

Maya: The Veil That Hides Our True Self
Maya, the illusion that clouds our vision, is responsible for our attachment to worldly possessions, desires, and the ego. Under the influence of Maya, we forget our true spiritual nature and identify with the temporary body instead of the eternal soul.
This identification leads to a cycle of suffering, confusion, and a constant feeling of incompleteness.
Maya distracts us from our true purpose— to serve and love Krishna. It pulls us into the pursuit of material success, relationships, and pleasures that, while seemingly fulfilling, ultimately leave us wanting more.
This insatiable desire creates a cycle of dissatisfaction, pulling us further away from our spiritual path.
Overcoming Maya Through Krishna-Consciousness
To be unaffected by Maya, we must cultivate a strong Krishna-consciousness, consciously redirecting our focus from the material to the spiritual, from temporary pleasures to eternal joy.
But how can we achieve this in a world filled with distractions?
- Devotional Service (Bhakti Yoga):
Engaging in regular devotional practices such as chanting the holy names, reading sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita, and participating in kirtan (devotional singing) purifies the mind and heart.
These practices anchor us in Krishna-consciousness, making it easier to resist the temptations of Maya.

Use your capability and your talent to serve Krishna
- Association with Devotees:
Being in the company of like-minded individuals who are also striving for Krishna-consciousness provides support and encouragement.
Together, devotees can share experiences, insights, and spiritual energy that strengthens their resolve to remain focused on Krishna.
- Mindful Living:
Every action, from the smallest to the most significant, can be infused with Krishna-consciousness.
Whether it’s cooking a meal, doing a job, or engaging in social interactions, doing it with the intention of pleasing Krishna helps to diminish the influence of Maya.
- Detachment:
Detachment doesn’t mean renunciation of life but rather a shift in perspective. It’s about performing one’s duties without attachment to the results, knowing that everything is under Krishna’s control.
This detachment frees the mind from the anxieties and fears that Maya creates.
- Self-Reflection:
Regular introspection helps to identify where Maya is exerting its influence. By recognizing these areas, one can consciously work to strengthen their Krishna-consciousness in those aspects of life.

The Eternal Joy of Krishna-Consciousness
True happiness lies in reconnecting with Krishna, our eternal companion. When we are Krishna-conscious, the fleeting pleasures of the material world lose their grip on us. We find joy in the simple, the spiritual, and the service of the Divine.
To be Krishna-conscious is to be in the world but not of it, to live with love, compassion, and devotion, untouched by the illusions that Maya creates.
It’s a journey of constant growth, self-discovery, and a deepening relationship with Krishna.
In this state, one experiences true freedom, peace, and fulfillment, knowing that they are walking the path of eternal truth.

On this Janmashtami, as we celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, let us renew our commitment to living a Krishna-conscious life. Let us remember that Krishna-consciousness is the antidote to the illusions of Maya.
By embracing devotion, mindful living, and detachment, we can rise above the material and experience the profound joy of being connected to Krishna. The rewards of this path are eternal and far beyond the fleeting pleasures of the material world.
May we all strive to be Krishna-conscious in every moment of our lives, finding peace, love, and fulfillment in His divine presence.
