# Threads of My Superstition#

A Tale from Two Decades Ago

This story unfolds two decades back when the winds of computerization were sweeping through our bank/ branch. During that technological transformation, I found myself caught in a web of superstitions that added a unique twist to my daily routine.

As the computerization process unfolded, I was entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing the branch’s system. Despite my limited experience with computers, my journey was further complicated by the unease felt by many staff members during this transition.

The air was thick with negative thoughts about the new system, creating an atmosphere of apprehension.

But amidst this sea of change, my steadfast belief in superstitions stood out. I had a peculiar habit of avoiding new clothes, fearing they might bring bad luck and usher in difficulties. This resulted in occasions when I would wear the same outfit for an entire week.

Though it may sound irrational, my strong belief left me with no choice but to adhere to these superstitions.

As I took charge of the branch’s system post-computerization, my daily ritual involved leaving the house with a prayer on my lips and expressing gratitude upon returning from the bank. This routine offered me solace and a sense of connection with the divine during those uncertain times.

During this period, I was posted at the main branch in Kolkata, living alone while my family resided in my native place, Patna.

One day, a domestic mishap led to all my shirts being tossed into the washing machine, leaving me with the need to quickly prepare for work. Although I had two brand-new shirts, my superstitions held me back from wearing them.😂😂

In a stroke of luck, my eyes fell upon an old shirt tucked away in the wardrobe—a shirt with an intriguing story. That shirt wasn’t just a piece of clothing; it was a symbol of love.

On a rainy day, a friend graciously offered me his old shirt when I got drenched during a visit to his house. I returned home wearing that shirt, and it became a symbol of unexpected good fortune.

Wearing that ordinary, yet sentimentally charged shirt to the bank that day proved to be a turning point. My work was praised, and the day unfolded surprisingly well.

It was then that I began to associate that shirt with a guarantee of good luck, and my journey into the realm of superstition began.

Days turned into a series of moments where that old shirt became my talisman for good luck. When I assumed the charge of Branch Manager at the Azad Hind Bagh Branch, the shirt accompanied me through moments of uncertainty, seamlessly guiding me through challenges.

In branch review meetings, I made a deliberate choice to wear that shirt. Interestingly, my friend who had given me the shirt never asked for it back, perhaps sensing the value I attached to it.

As time passed, the shirt wore out, becoming unsuitable for wear. People would occasionally express surprise at why a Branch Manager was wearing such an ordinary shirt. The reality was that I had become attached to the shirt for reasons beyond its appearance.

Regrettably, the story takes a somber turn. One day, my wife, during a visit from our native place to Kolkata, decided to retire the worn-out shirt. It was handed over to the maid for use as a floor-cleaning cloth.

That shirt once was my darling. hanged stayed within my sight for many days during floor cleaning, but there was nothing I could do to change its fate.

This tale, a convergence of technology and superstition, serves as a reminder that sometimes, even in the world of numbers and logic, we find threads of belief that weave their way into the fabric of our lives.
