We all know that addiction is dangerous. Still, some people get caught up in it and ruin their lives. I’ve heard a touching and true story about bright students getting trapped in addiction and throwing away their promising futures. I would like to share one such real story.

The bustling streets of Hyderabad held the vibrant dreams of a young man named Salem Manoj. At 20, he was a rising star, a student at the prestigious Institute of Aeronautical Engineering, with a future as bright as the sky he aspired to conquer.

Yet, beneath the promising facade, darkness brewed a silent struggle that would ultimately extinguish his light.

In the world of online gaming

It began subtly, a descent into the alluring world of online gaming. This insidious addiction, perhaps coupled with the reported involvement in online betting, gradually ensnared Manoj in its web.

Unbeknownst to his loving family, he resorted to dangerous measures, taking loans from online apps and even borrowing from friends to feed his virtual life, all while maintaining a facade of normalcy in his academic pursuits.

The truth, however, could not remain hidden forever. In November 2023, concerned friends, unable to bear the burden of silence any longer, revealed Manoj’s addiction to his family.

The news sent shockwaves through their hearts. They desperately attempted to intervene, pleading with Manoj to seek help and break free from the clutches of addiction. Sadly, their pleas fell on deaf ears.

The borrowed money, instead of fuelling his dreams, vanished into the digital abyss, leaving a trail of financial ruin. His father, with unwavering love, shouldered the burden, paying off a staggering Rs. 3 lakh to clear the debts.

Yet, the cycle continued. As if drawn by an invisible force, Manoj found himself borrowing again, seemingly trapped in a self-destructive loop.

February 2024 arrived, marking a crucial time in Manoj’s academic journey. With exams looming, his family remained unaware of the storm brewing within him.

His father, engaged in carpentry work, his mother attending an event, and his brother away, Manoj was left alone to face his demons.

He made a heartbreaking decision

On the fateful day of February 26th, in the absence of his loved ones, Manoj made a heartbreaking decision. He chose to end his own life, leaving behind a void that no words could explain. The news shattered his family, leaving them grappling with the incomprehensible loss of their son, their future astronaut.

In their grief, they revealed that Manoj had accumulated another Rs. 60,000 in debt, and to further their pain, loan recovery agents began harassing them. The authorities launched an investigation, labeling his death suspicious. Questions swirled in the air, heavy with disbelief and sorrow. How could a life brimming with potential have ended so tragically?

Even if he faced the relentless pursuit of debt collectors and found solace in his father’s unwavering support, why did Manoj succumb to the darkness that consumed him?

This haunting question resonated through the community, echoing in the hearts of those who knew him.

As the investigation unfolds, the hope is to shed light on the complexities of Manoj’s story. May this tragic tale serve as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life, the devastating consequences of addiction, and the urgent need for compassion, understanding, and timely intervention when facing its relentless grip.
