Dear friends,
Diwali, the much-anticipated festival celebrated primarily by Hindus, marks the joyous return of Lord Rama after a 14-year exile, victorious over Ravana. While the glittering lights and vibrant festivities of Diwali have faded, the memories linger on, etched in the canvas of our minds.
As we take a moment to reflect on the past year during this auspicious time, my thoughts wander to the bittersweet moments of Diwalis gone by, especially those from my childhood.
Diwali, a festival mostly cherished by children, is a time for fireworks, sparklers, and indulging in sweet treats.

The Memories unfold
One can’t help but reminisce about the days when friends gathered to light crackers and set off fireworks. Among these recollections, a particular incident from my childhood resurfaces as I watched kids play with firecrackers.
In those days, a week before Diwali, our group of 7-8 friends would come together to ignite firecrackers and light sparklers. I vividly recall an incident involving an ‘anar’ (a type of firework) that has stayed with me over the years.
On one occasion, while attempting to light an ‘anar,’ I inadvertently held a defective one. As I prepared to toss it away, the firework unexpectedly burst in my hand. The loud bang startled everyone, and fear gripped me. The burn on my hand was intense, but more than the pain, I dreaded the repercussions when I returned home.

Worried about the consequences,
Worried about the consequences, my friends and I brainstormed for a solution. It was then that my friend Kishor came up with a quick idea. He rushed to his house, fetched a bottle of ink (in those days, ink pens were in use), and applied it generously on the burnt area of my hand.
While the burning sensation eased, my relief was short-lived. Upon returning home, I faced not only the pain of the burn but also the scolding for the mishap.
Diwali is undoubtedly a festival of sharing joy, but for me, that particular Diwali left me with a bodily reminder of the celebrations. Whenever I witness a child lighting a firecracker today, it evokes a flood of memories from my own childhood Diwalis.
As we bask in the glow of the festive lights and revel in the warmth of family and friends, let’s also cherish the memories that make Diwali a truly special celebration.
Wishing you all the joy and light this Diwali season!
