# When Arjuna Faces Hanuman #

Hanuman and Arjuna in the Mahabharata

Friends,

According to mythological beliefs, Hanuman, the son of the wind, is immortal. He was present in the Treta Yuga to serve his lord, Sri Rama, during the battle in Lanka. When Sri Rama took his final breath, he ordered Hanuman to stay on Earth.

Since then, it has been believed that Hanuman resides on Earth. In the Dvapara Yuga, when he learned that his lord, Sri Krishna, had reincarnated on Earth, he was overjoyed.

It is said that during the Mahabharata war, as per Lord Krishna’s wish, Hanuman adorned the flag of Arjuna’s chariot. A story in the Ananda Ramayana connects to this, where Hanuman breaks Arjuna’s pride.

Friends, the Mahabharata holds many such episodes that impart valuable lessons and guide us towards a better life.

In this spirit, here is another episode from the Mahabharata, which not only entertains but also imparts wisdom.

Once, Lord Krishna asked Arjuna, “I need some flowers for worship. Could you please get some for me?” Arjuna obeyed his command and went to the Kadam forest to gather flowers.

Coincidentally, Hanuman was resting there. As soon as Arjuna plucked a few flowers, Hanuman woke up with a roar, noticing someone plucking flowers.

He asked, “Who are you, and what are you doing here?”

Arjuna replied, “I am Arjuna, and I am plucking some flowers.”

Hanuman said, “Before plucking flowers, one should seek permission. I am sitting here.”

Arjuna said, “Why ask for such a trivial matter?”

Hanuman said, “The issue is not about big or small; it is about stealing. Tell me, for whom are you plucking the flowers?”

Arjuna replied, “I am gathering flowers for my lord, Sri Krishna.”

Hearing this, Hanuman first smiled and then said, “Then your behavior must be the same. He(Krishna) is a thief himself.

Arjuna felt offended. He thought, “I am such a great archer, and for these few flowers, this monkey(Hanuman) is calling our lord Sri Krishna a thief.”

Arjuna turned back and replied, “I know about your lord(Sri Ram) as well. He made countless monkeys work to build a bridge to Lanka. He could have built the bridge with his arrows alone.”

Hanuman smiled and asked, “Can you build a bridge with your arrows?”

Arjuna confidently said, “Certainly, I can build a bridge with my arrows.”

Hanuman said, “Think again. Lord Rama built a bridge on which thousands of bears and monkeys comfortably crossed to reach Lanka. Can you make such a strong bridge? Can you show me one monkey(Hanuman) crossing your bridge?”

Arjuna, with full confidence, replied, “Absolutely, the bridge I build will be strong. There will be no question of it breaking.”

In a few moments. Arjuna, using his divine arrows, constructed a magnificent bridge. Then he challenged Hanuman to cross it.

When Hanuman transformed into his colossal form, the sun itself dimmed, and Arjuna’s eyes closed involuntarily.

Arjuna worried that even this strong bridge might not withstand Hanuman’s enormous weight.

Hanuman confidently prepared to cross the bridge. To Arjuna’s surprise, as soon as Hanuman took the first step onto the bridge, the bridge descended into the depths of the earth.

Arjuna was left astounded, unable to see the bridge anymore.

Hanuman smilingly asked, “Where is your bridge, Arjun? I can’t see it.”

Arjuna, now feeling the weight of his pledge to end his life, began collecting firewood for self-immolation.

Hanuman, with compassion, tried to dissuade him, saying, “There’s no need for that. Life is precious; don’t end it.”

Arjuna, however, was resolute and stated, “I am a warrior, and failing to keep my word is not an option. I must follow through with my promise, or how can I face the world?”

Hanuman responded, “This is a matter only between us; How the world will know?. “

Arjuna said, I am a Kshatriya, so I will have to keep my word. Saying this  Arjuna remained firm in his resolve, collecting wood for self-immolation.
