Echoes of Retirement” is a heartfelt poem that captures the emotions and experiences of a retiree as they navigate the transition from a busy working life to a quieter, more contemplative chapter.

Despite the initial sense of loss, the poem ultimately conveys a message of resilience and hope, emphasizing the importance of embracing life’s journey with courage and the support of friends.

Echoes of Retirement
Once you retire, a shift in life’s cadence,
A feeling of loss, an altered existence,
Embracing free time, passions to pursue,
Yet solitude lingers, with a different view.
Empty mailbox, a silent phone call,
Boredom creeps in, boredom enthralls,
Who will reach out, who’ll lend an ear,
In this newfound quiet, isolation’s fear.
Companion’s absorbed, in her work engrossed,
Her shouts, a reminder of connections lost,
A hot cup of tea, I linger, and I ponder,
Seeking purpose, as empty hours wander.
My son, a prisoner of the internet’s sphere,
Locked in his room, I hold back a tear,
through Zoom’s window, our connection pear,
But, In his moments of need, I find them near.
Even my dog doesn’t look at me,
won’t even give me a calling bark,
The only time she comes to me,
when she got to go for a walk.
But I found solace, in a familiar refrain,
Dancing to tunes, and releasing my pain,
With good health, thank God, I’m still alive,
Young friends stand by, together we strive.
Life’s challenges, we’ll overcome them all,
In this quiet chapter, we’ll still stand tall.
I can dance, I can swim, do what I swear,
Life is a journey, let’s embrace, and dare.
