Striving for a Harmonious World

Namaskar, dear friends!

I hope this message finds you in good health and high spirits. Today, I welcome you back to my blog, and we have a very important topic to discuss.

Yes, today is September 21st, and we are celebrating International Peace Day.

In a world that often seems chaotic, with conflicts and tensions prevalent in every corner, the significance of this day cannot be overstated. Many nations flex their muscles against one another, leading to wars and destruction. Even in our homes, we often encounter turmoil, be it for one reason or another.

It’s a good time to pause and reflect with a peaceful mind on the root causes of this “Ashanti” or unrest. Remember, where there’s a will, there’s a way. Every problem has a solution.

Let’s talk about International Peace Day. Every year, this day has a theme, and this year it is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals.” The main goal of this day is to work towards global peace and encourage a halt in conflicts between nations.

In 2001, the official date for World Peace Day was declared as September 21st. Before that, the annual General Assembly sessions of the United Nations were traditionally held on the third Tuesday of September.

The United Nations had proposed the observance of World Peace Day back in 1981, and it was first celebrated on the third Tuesday of September in 1982. Since then, it has been consistently observed on September 21st starting in 2002.

Interestingly, to mark this day, the United Nations Peace Bell is rung at the UN headquarters in New York. This unique bell is made from coins donated by children from every continent except Africa. Inscribed on the bell is the phrase, “Long live absolute world peace.”

For the year 2023, the United Nations has chosen the theme “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #Global Goals.” This theme calls for action that strengthens the culture of peace, contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and emphasizes that peace must be the foundation for progress.

It underscores the fact that no nation can build development on a foundation of conflict.

Former Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, introduced the principles of Panchsheel, which are considered the five basic mantras for maintaining world peace.

The purpose of International Peace Day is to remind us all to live in harmony and work towards world peace. It highlights the importance of non-violence and conflict resolution as the means to establish peace.

On this day, countries like India share quotes and slogans related to peace on their social media accounts to raise awareness about International Peace Day.

Quotes on Peace

  • “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” – Albert Einstein
  • “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. He lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony.” – Nelson Mandela
  • “Peace is not merely a distant goal that we seek, but a means by which we arrive at that goal.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
  • “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.” – Mahatma Gandhi
  • “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” – Abraham Lincoln
  • “Peace begins with a smile.” – Mother Teresa
  • “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” – Mahatma Gandhi
  • “Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures.” – John F. Kennedy
  • “If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.” – Mother Teresa

Friends,

International Peace Day serves as a reminder that peace is not merely the absence of conflict; it’s a shared responsibility that requires actions and efforts from all of us.

The 2023 theme emphasizes that peace is essential for achieving global goals, and cooperation among nations is vital for building a harmonious world.

I hope you found this blog post both informative and inspiring. On this International Day of Peace, let us commit to being agents of positive change and ambassadors of peace in our communities and beyond.

  3. What defines the goal of the current war in Gaza?

The over 200 kidnapped captives a clear priority. However, Israel fights a regime change war. The total unconditional surrender of Hamas defines the Will of the People of Israel to achieve justice for the slaughter of some 1400 Israelis on October 7th. The unconditional surrender of Hamas simply stated: the return of the all the kidnapped captives without any pre-conditions.
