#International Men’s Day#

Friends,

Today is November 19 and we are celebrating “International Men’s Day ” today.

The day is important to raise awareness about the health of men and also to highlight their socio-economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also celebrates the positive value that men bring to the world and motivates them to become positive role models.

  • This day focuses on men’s health, improving gender relations, highlighting male role models, and promoting positive expressions of masculinity.
  • It is also an opportunity to recognize men who don’t fall into traditional manifestations of masculinity, such as gay and bisexual men, transgender, or masculine non-binary people.
  • Gender equality is always a worthy goal, and International Men’s Day reminds us to make a special effort to strive for positive relations across the entire gender spectrum.

Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a history lecturer at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago, founded the International Men’s Day project on November 19, 1999.

He realized that even though there was a day for fathers called “Father’s day”, but there was no day to celebrate men who didn’t have kids, or who were young boys and teenagers.

Teelucksingh understood the importance of positive male role models, as his father had been an excellent example for him, and chose to celebrate International Men’s Day on November 19 — the day of his father’s birthday and the day a local soccer team had united his country with their endeavors to qualify for the world cup.

The day is to promote positive aspects of male identity based on the premise that men respond more constructively to positive role models than to negative gender stereotyping.

We do not intend the day to compete with “International Women’s Day” but to highlight the importance of men’s physical and mental health and positive masculinity.

Since the aim of International Men’s Day is men’s health and well-being,

I would like to highlight some statistics about men.

  • 87% – The percentage of rough sleepers who are men.
  • 73% – The percentage of people who go missing that are male.
  • 76% – The percentage of suicides that are committed by men.
  • 8.7% – The percentage of men who are alcohol dependent.
  • 26% – The percentage of men who suffer from high cholesterol.
  • 76 yrs – The life expectancy of a man born in the U.S.
  • 22% – The percentage of men who have experienced mental health problems in the last year.

International Men’s Day encourages men to teach the boys in their lives the values, character, and responsibilities of being a man.

Mahatma Gandhi said, “We must become the change we seek.” It is only when we all, both men and women, lead by example that we will create a fair and safe society that allows everyone the opportunity to prosper.

And, in the end, I would like to mention that …

You are the rock in your lives – Be the best husband, Be the best father, Be the loving brother and be the obedient son we should ever wish for.

A day to celebrate the warmth and strength a man brings into life. We wish you all a Happy International Men’s Day.
