# Did You Smile Today ?

There are many studies that show how the problems of stress and depression are becoming omnipresent and affecting a vast majority of us. A recent study by ASSOCHAM revealed that 42.5% of employees in the Indian private sector suffer from depression.

It is also revealed that a much higher % of the working population is under stress without realizing it. The epidemic of stress is bound to grow as the working system undergoing rapid change because of corona pandemic.

Yes, in this crisis of the pandemic, we have made many turns, changing our lifestyle in unimaginable ways. All these changes may be necessary to stay physically fit and mentally happy. But first, we need to understand Why do we are depressed repeatedly. What is it that happens within us ?

Friends,

That question has relevance today. First, ask a question yourself – Did you smile today ? Because we are celebrating World Laughter Day today.

World Laughter Day is celebrated to raise awareness of laughter’s healing benefits. This Day is an annual event celebrated every year on the first Sunday of May.

Dr. Kataria is a physician who was motivated to establish the Laughter Yoga Movement by the facial feedback theory, which claims that a person’s facial expressions may influence their thoughts.

Significance of the Day

This day has emphasized the value of laughing and its healing effects. There are so many laughter clubs are promoted on this day. Such groups comprise persons who use deliberate laughing exercise in order to improve physical and mental health and wellness.

In the present circumstances , its importance has increased much more. Because today there is an atmosphere of fear and sadness in all over the world because of the corona pandemic. We have actually forgotten to laugh and smile.

Despite that, in this difficult time, there is hope in everyone’s heart that tomorrow will definitely bring happiness.

To maintain this hope, today the most needed is to laugh and smile again, so that along with the positivity within us, our immunity system will also improve .

It is true that in today’s stressful life, laughing works as a Sanjivani (lifesaver) for us. Laughter is considered as the best medicine, yet we have forgotten to laugh in the hustle and bustle of life.

A photo taken with a few-second smile makes your face beautiful… Just imagine how beautiful our life can be if we are always happy and smiling.

Practice Laughter Exercise:

It is an exercise. We don’t need to rely on jokes or a sense of humor. We do laughter as an exercise to begin with, which turns into real and genuine laughter when practiced in a group.  I generally , do laughter exercise with my friend circle during the morning walk.

Physiologically, stimulated laughter has similar cardiovascular and respiratory demands to spontaneous laughter. It has many benefits.

Make Good Mood throughout the day:

Laughter exercise can change our mood within minutes by releasing endorphins from our brain cells. This makes us feel good and helps in cheerful all throughout the day.

Strong Immune System:

It does not cure any disease, but it helps in curing it. Laughter increases immunity in our body and helps in reducing stress. If your immune system is strong, you will not catch any infection easily.

Improves Brain Function:

Our brain needs 25 % more oxygen for optimal functioning. Laughter exercises can increase the net supply of oxygen to our body and brain, which helps to improve efficiency and performance. We will feel energetic and can work more than what normally do without getting tired.

High Emotional Intelligence for Success in Life:

As we know that success in life depends upon 85% Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and only 15% Intelligence Quotient (IQ) Research shows that laughter Yoga increases the Emotional Intelligence.

  • Laughter can help in managing the weight of our body. It controls obesity.
  • When you laugh, your face and core muscles receive a workout that keeps your face glowing.
  • People may be energized by laughter in the same way that a cup of a coffee can. It will give you a boost of energy.
  • A smile starts on the lops, a grin spreads to the eyes, a chuckle comes from the belly, but a good laugh bursts forth from the soul, overflows and bubbles all around.
  • I have not seen anyone dying of laughter, but I know millions who are ,dying because they are not laughing.

Friends, if we have seen so many benefits of laughing, then why not celebrate every day as Laughter Day and take out some time in our busy routine to laugh a lot ourselves, as well as make others laugh.

To add greater fun in your life, you might spend time with old friends and revisit in your childhood memoirs and feel the smiling experience.
