Hi friends,
In my previous Blog, I had mentioned about an incidence of my friend, who lost his life due to cardiac arrest on the first day of this new year. He was suffering from Heart disease.
That’s why I wanted to discuss how to keep the heart healthy during the cold season.
It is true that winter season is vulnerable for those having heart problems.
According to a study, if we compare the coldest month of the year to the warmest month of the year, there is a 31 % increase in heart attack in the coldest months.
It is the time when blood vessels contract and this can shoot up blood pressure and creating the risk of heart attack.
In days of cold weather, it is imperative to plan our daily routine to keep our heart in top shape. We would like to mention some tips for keeping our heart healthy.

- Stay warm during colder days….
It is suggested to wear woolen clothes, caps, socks and gloves particularly for senior citizen to protect our body from cold exposure. keep the house well heated.
Beware of heart attack symptom like chest pain, nausea and even drowsiness. Avoid exercising in cold weather in open area , instead opt for indoor exercise.
- Monitor your blood pressure on daily basis :
Those who have B.P. problems must monitor blood pressure on regular basis. We must take the medications prescribed by the doctor on time.
- Restrict alcohol:
It has generally been seen that alcohol intake is increased during winter season, whether on the occasion of new year celebration or any other party function.
We must know that alcohol expands the blood vessel in the skin and make us feel warmer by taking out heat from our body’s vital organs causing problems for the heart.

- Avoid smoking :
We all know that smoking leads to atherosclerosis. Not only this, those who smoke can also encounter a heart attack. Because smoking reduces the oxygen flow towards the heart, raises our heart rate and blood pressure.
It is suggestive to avoid smoking completely, specially for senior citizen and those suffering from heart disease.
- Eat Healthy :
Along with healthy food diet one should opt for fresh fruit and vegetables, seeds, nuts, legumes and sprouts pulses, always try to drink a warm soup and eat hot meals.
Avoid eating junk and oily foods as well as excess of salt and sugar should be restricted.
- Manage Stress :
Not all stress is bad. But long-term stress can lead to health problems. Preventing and managing long-term stress can lower risk for other conditions like heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, and depression.
We can manage our stress through proper relaxing along with exercise, yoga and meditation.
- Find your Happy Place :
A sunny outlook may be good for your heart, as well as your mood.
According to the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, chronic stress, anxiety, and anger can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. Maintain a positive outlook on life, this help you stay healthier for longer.
Friends ..Apart from this, there are many ways to keep our heart healthy. I hope you take good care of your wellbeing in this cold season..

Nice tips to maintain heart healthy in winter. One more thing that I would like to add is that morning walk in extreme winter conditions should be avoided as it increases the chance of heart attacks.

Typically we spend our winter on a tropical island. Unfortunately this year, Covid made that impossible. 🌴🌊
