Hello, dear friends,

I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt question is very interesting, as I read: “What’s a small moment from your past that you still think about years later?”

At first glance, it sounds like a simple question. We might expect to remember a birthday celebration, a family vacation, a professional achievement, or a memorable occasion.

But when I pause and look back at my life, I realise that the moments that stay with us are not always grand or extraordinary. Sometimes, they are just a few words spoken by someone we love, a smile from a stranger, a mother’s gentle touch, or a goodbye we never knew would be our last.

Let us take a little journey into the beautiful world of our memories.

A family of three sitting together on a stone bench near the coast, with the ocean in the background. The woman is wearing a yellow outfit, the girl is in a pink shirt with sunglasses, and the man is in a brown shirt and hat.

Life is a collection of moments, but we do not always recognise their importance when they happen.

We spend much of our time chasing big dreams, celebrating milestones, and waiting for special occasions. Meanwhile, the little moments quietly pass us by. Years later, we may discover that those seemingly insignificant experiences have become some of our most precious treasures.

A simple evening spent chatting with an old friend, sharing a cup of tea with our parents, or walking beside our children when they were small can leave an imprint that time cannot erase.

As the saying goes:

“Sometimes, the smallest moments take up the biggest space in our hearts.”

Perhaps that is because these moments are not about what we possess or achieve. They are about how we feel, whom we love, and the connections that make life meaningful.

A woman and a boy holding hands, walking away from the viewer. The woman is dressed in a traditional sari, and the boy is wearing a simple t-shirt and shorts, set against a softly blended background.

When I think about my past, my thoughts naturally travel towards my mother.

Life was not always easy for her. After my father passed away when I was young, she carried the responsibility of raising her family with courage and determination. She taught me lessons that no classroom could ever provide.

One thought associated with her has stayed with me throughout my life: “Keep moving on.”

Those words may sound ordinary, but their meaning grows deeper with every passing year. Life brings disappointments, unexpected changes, separations, and moments when we feel uncertain about the road ahead. During such times, the spirit of those words reminds me not to surrender to circumstances.

Today, when I look back, I wish I could sit beside her once again, listen to her voice, and tell her how much her lessons have meant to me.

But life does not always give us another opportunity to say what is in our hearts.

Perhaps this is why certain memories remain so powerful. They become bridges connecting the people we have lost with the people we continue to be.

A man in a turquoise shirt and shorts is crouching by the shoreline, reflecting in the wet sand, with ocean waves in the background.

During my long banking career, I met many people and experienced countless situations. Some memories are associated with professional responsibilities, while others belong to friendships, laughter, and the little surprises of everyday life.

Yet, I have learnt that the real value of a moment does not depend on its importance in the eyes of the world.

A colleague’s unexpected kindness, a sincere word of appreciation, or a conversation that brightened a difficult day can remain with us long after we have forgotten the details of important events.

Now, in retirement, I find happiness in simple pleasures: writing for my blog, painting, swimming, and spending time with loved ones. These activities remind me that happiness does not always arrive with a grand announcement. Often, it sits quietly beside us, waiting to be noticed.

“We remember not every day that passes, but the moments that touch our souls.”

I believe certain moments remain in our minds because they are connected with powerful emotions.

Psychologists explain that emotionally significant experiences can be remembered more vividly than routine events. Love, joy, regret, gratitude, and even sadness can give a memory lasting significance.

Sometimes, we revisit a memory because it makes us smile. At other times, we return to it because there is something unfinished—a word left unspoken, an apology never offered, or a farewell we were not prepared to make.

But memories are not merely windows into the past. They can also be teachers.

They remind us to appreciate people while they are with us, express affection without hesitation, forgive where possible, and never underestimate the impact of a small act of kindness.

A smiling elderly man wearing a white SBI polo shirt is sitting at a table, writing in a notebook while looking at a laptop.

Dear friends, while remembering the past is beautiful, we must not become so absorbed in yesterday that we forget to live today.

The small moments we are creating right now may become our most treasured memories years from now.

So, let us put away our phones during family conversations, listen patiently when someone shares a concern, laugh freely with friends, and express our love before an opportunity slips away.

We may not be able to give everyone extraordinary experiences, but we can offer our presence, attention, and kindness.

And these gifts often matter more than we realise.

Looking back, I have come to understand that life is not measured only by the milestones we achieve, but also by the little moments that quietly shape our hearts.

My mother’s words, the warmth of old relationships, and the simple joys of everyday life continue to remind me of what truly matters.

Perhaps the small moment from our past that we still think about years later is not small at all. Perhaps it contains a lesson, a love, or a feeling that we were too young or too busy to understand at the time.

My dear friends, here is today’s question for you: What is one small moment from your past that you still remember vividly, and why has it stayed with you for so many years?

I would love to hear your stories. Sometimes, sharing a memory is another way of keeping a precious moment alive.

Until we meet again, keep smiling, keep remembering, and above all, keep creating beautiful moments.

Because today’s ordinary moment may become tomorrow’s extraordinary memory.

  1. A teacher I worked with gave me an ornament that said you treat the children as if they were your own…you can see the love in your eyes as well as theirs.
