What’s a song that changed your life?

Hello, dear friends!
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.
Today’s writing prompt asks a question that takes me on a journey down memory lane: “What’s a song that changed your life?”
For me, one song stands apart: “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli” from the timeless Hindi film Anand.
Whenever I think of its opening words, “Zindagi kaisi hai paheli, kabhi yeh hasaye, kabhi yeh rulaye,” I feel as though someone has put the story of my life into music.
Life has made me laugh, tested my patience, surprised me with unexpected opportunities, and taught me lessons I could never have learned from books alone.
And now, looking back, I realise that the journey itself has been the greatest teacher.

❤️ From a Young Banker to a Retired Dreamer
When I joined the State Bank of India in December 1985, I could hardly have imagined how much the next 32 years would shape my life.
Banking became more than a profession. It brought responsibilities, friendships, transfers, new cities, challenging assignments, and countless encounters with people from different walks of life.
There were busy working days, professional achievements, difficult decisions, and moments when family responsibilities competed with the demands of my career. Like most people, I sometimes wondered whether life was taking me where I had originally intended to go.
But that is the puzzle of life, isn’t it? We begin with one set of dreams, and somewhere along the way, life introduces us to another.
In April 2017, I retired from banking. One chapter closed, and a new one quietly opened.
I had left behind my professional responsibilities, but I had not retired from my curiosity, creativity, or desire to live meaningfully.
I discovered that retirement was not the end of my working life; it was an invitation to rediscover myself.

❤️ The Unexpected Joys of a Second Innings
Before retirement, the demands of a career often leave little room for the things we wish to explore. We keep postponing our dreams, telling ourselves that we will pursue them when we have more time.
Retirement gave me that time—and an opportunity to ask myself a different question: What can I create with the years ahead?
I began giving more space to writing, nurturing my blog, exploring painting, and developing interests that brought me joy. My writing became a way to share thoughts and experiences, while painting offered a quiet space where I could simply enjoy the moment.
There is a special satisfaction in sitting before a blank sheet of paper, holding a brush or pen, and watching something emerge from your imagination.
My morning walks, moments of reflection, and games of table tennis remind me that an active life is not reserved for the young. Every age has its own opportunities, provided we remain willing to discover them.
Sometimes I smile at this unexpected turn in my journey. The years that might have been spent wondering what retirement would bring have become years of exploring what I can still do.
Perhaps this is what the song teaches me: life may not follow our plans, but it can still surprise us with beautiful possibilities.

❤️ When the Song Becomes a Mirror
The magic of Anand lies in its understanding of life’s contradictions. We laugh even when our hearts are heavy, and sometimes tears arrive in the middle of our happiest memories.
As the years pass, we learn that success does not protect us from disappointment, and difficult experiences do not take away our capacity for happiness.
We carry memories of people we have loved, places we have lived, and moments we wish we could revisit. Yet the present continues to offer new reasons to smile.
For me, the song is a reminder not to measure life merely by the number of years lived, the positions held, or the achievements collected.
What matters is how we use our time, how we treat people, and whether we continue to grow as human beings.
I cannot return to the young banker who began his career in 1985. Nor would I want to erase the experiences that have brought me to this stage of life.
Every chapter has contributed something to the person I am today.

❤️ My Message to Every Retired Friend
If retirement has taught me anything, it is that we should never confuse the end of a career with the end of our possibilities.
There are books waiting to be written, paintings waiting to be created, places waiting to be explored, and friendships waiting to deepen.
We do not need to accomplish something extraordinary every day. Sometimes, happiness is simply a peaceful morning, a cup of tea, a meaningful conversation, or the satisfaction of learning something new.
As I often remind myself:
“Retirement from a job should never mean retirement from life.”
Dear friends, perhaps we cannot solve life’s mysterious puzzle. But we can meet its uncertainties with courage, its blessings with gratitude, and its surprises with an open heart.
When I think of “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli,” I no longer hear merely a beautiful song from an old film. I hear an invitation to embrace every season of life—the laughter and the tears, the achievements and the disappointments, the endings and the beginnings.
And if life has another surprise waiting for me tomorrow, I hope I will welcome it with the curiosity of a student and the enthusiasm of a beginner.
After all, the story is still being written!
❤️ Now Your Turn
Dear friends, which song has touched your heart or changed the way you look at life?
For me, this beautiful song from Anand captures a truth I have come to appreciate with age: we may not control every turn our journey takes, but we can choose to live each chapter with purpose, gratitude, and joy.
Life remains a beautiful mystery. Let us enjoy the journey while we still have pages to turn.

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE

Dear Verma ji,
What a beautiful, heartfelt reflection—thank you for sharing it. “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli” is indeed one of those rare songs that holds a mirror to life, and you’ve woven its meaning so gracefully into your own journey. From a young banker in 1985 to a retired dreamer who paints, writes, and walks with curiosity—your story is a gentle reminder that life’s detours often lead to the richest chapters.
I especially loved this line: “Retirement from a job should never mean retirement from life.” It’s a truth so many need to hear. Your words about finding joy in a peaceful morning, a cup of tea, or a blank sheet of paper waiting for a brush or pen—those are the quiet victories that make a life well lived.
Thank you for inspiring us to embrace every season with gratitude and an open heart. And as for your question—a song that changed my outlook is “Kabhi Kabhie Mere Dil Mein” from the film Kabhie Kabhie. It reminds me that love, longing, and memory are all part of the same beautiful mystery.
Wishing you many more pages to turn, Verma ji. Keep writing, keep painting, and keep surprising yourself. 🌸
