# Maa Durga: The Lion of Courage and My First Artistic Offering #

Hello, dear friends! ❤️

Happy Maha Navami to you and your families! 🙏🌺

Some festivals bring happiness, some awaken cherished childhood memories, and some touch our hearts so deeply that they become a part of our personal journey. For me, Durga Puja is all this and much more.

Every year, as the fragrance of incense fills the air, the soulful chants of mantras echo through the pandals, and the rhythmic beats of the dhak announce the arrival of the Divine Mother, I feel an indescribable sense of devotion and belonging.

But this Durga Puja has become particularly special to me for a deeply personal reason.

For the first time, I had the wonderful opportunity to paint Maa Durga and offer my artwork for the decoration of our community pandal.

As I held my brush and brought the Divine Mother’s image to life on canvas, I felt that I was doing more than creating a painting—I was expressing my devotion through the language of colours.

When I later saw my artwork displayed among the decorations, my heart filled with a quiet, profound happiness. It was a humble offering, but one that carried my sincere prayers and emotions.

This experience also brought back memories of childhood, when mythological stories seemed magical, and every question about our gods opened the door to a fascinating world of wonder.

Even today, the stories of Maa Durga continue to inspire me, reminding me that faith, courage, and creativity can come together in beautiful ways.

And that brings me to a question that might sound delightfully innocent, yet carries a deeper meaning:

“Where did Maa Durga find her lion?”

Let us explore the fascinating story behind the Divine Mother’s mighty companion, discover some lesser-known aspects of Maha Navami, and reflect on the timeless lessons that make this festival so meaningful to all of us.

❤️ The Divine Birth of Maa Durga

According to Hindu mythology, there was once a powerful demon named Mahishasura who had obtained a boon that made him nearly invincible to the gods and men.

Emboldened by his power, he began terrorising the three worlds, challenging the authority of the gods and disturbing the balance of the universe.

When the gods realised that their individual powers were insufficient to defeat him, their divine energies united to manifest Maa Durga.

The goddess emerged as an extraordinary embodiment of strength, wisdom, and compassion. The gods presented her with celestial weapons, preparing her for the battle that would determine the fate of the universe.

Maa Durga fought Mahishasura with extraordinary courage and ultimately defeated him, restoring peace and righteousness.

This ancient legend conveys a message that remains relevant even today: when goodness unites against injustice, even the mightiest evil can be overcome.

As a timeless thought reminds us, “Unity gives us strength, and courage gives that strength a purpose.”

🦁 Where Did Maa Durga Find Her Lion?

Imagine a curious child looking at an image of Maa Durga and asking, “Grandpa, where did Mother Durga find her lion?”

What a wonderful question! It invites us to look beyond the beautiful image and discover its deeper symbolism.

In Hindu iconography, Maa Durga is commonly depicted riding a lion, although some regional traditions portray her with a tiger.

The precise origin of her mount varies across traditional accounts and artistic interpretations. In many depictions, the lion is presented as her divine vehicle, or vahana, rather than as an ordinary animal she simply found.

The lion symbolises courage, authority, fearlessness, and mastery over powerful instincts. Seated upon this mighty creature, the goddess represents the ability to govern strength with wisdom and determination.

There is a beautiful contrast in her image: she possesses the power to destroy evil, yet her divine presence also represents maternal love and compassion.

The lion may roar with power, but the Divine Mother guides that power with wisdom.

Perhaps this is one of the most meaningful lessons of Durga Puja. True courage does not mean being free from fear; it means refusing to let fear control our actions.

We, too, must learn to master our anger, ego, jealousy, and anxieties before we can successfully face the challenges that life places before us.

❤️ Four Lesser-Known Facts About Maha Navami

Durga Puja is rich in traditions, symbolism, and fascinating regional customs. Here are four aspects that make this celebration even more meaningful.

1. The significance of the final battle

In many popular tellings of the Durga-Mahishasura legend, the battle reaches its culmination around Maha Navami, while Vijayadashami celebrates the goddess’s victory. The precise ritual sequence and interpretation vary among traditions.

2. The importance of Sandhi Puja

In the Bengali tradition, Sandhi Puja is performed at the sacred transition between Ashtami and Navami, traditionally marking the final 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. It commemorates a crucial moment in the battle against the forces of evil and is observed with great devotion.

3. Weapons and tools receive respect

The tradition of Ayudha Puja, observed during Navratri in several parts of India, honours weapons, tools, books, instruments, and equipment used in everyday work. It reminds us to respect the means through which we learn, create, and contribute to society.

4. The goddess represents Shakti

Maa Durga embodies Shakti, the divine feminine energy associated with creation, preservation, and transformation. She is not simply a warrior goddess; she also represents the strength, intelligence, and compassion needed to protect and nurture life.

These traditions remind us that spirituality is not confined to temples. It can be expressed through our work, relationships, creativity, and commitment to doing what is right.

🎨 My First Artistic Offering to Maa Durga

Every artist dreams of creating something meaningful—something that reaches beyond colours and canvas to touch the hearts of others.

This Durga Puja, I experienced that joy firsthand when I created a painting of Maa Durga for the decoration of our community pandal.

As part of the tradition of displaying artworks by resident artists, my painting became a humble contribution to the collective beauty of the celebration.

For me, it was much more than a painting. It was an offering of devotion, imagination, and heartfelt gratitude.

As I worked on the canvas, every brushstroke carried a special emotion. I wanted to capture the Divine Mother’s powerful presence, the grace in her eyes, and the courage that radiates from her magnificent form.

Through colours and shapes, I hoped to express the eternal message of hope, compassion, and the triumph of good over evil.

“When devotion meets creativity, even a simple brushstroke can become a prayer.”

Seeing my artwork displayed in our community pandal was a deeply fulfilling experience. It brought me immense happiness to know that something created by my hands could become part of a celebration shared by so many people.

I felt grateful that my painting could contribute, even in a small way, to the festive beauty surrounding us.

It was a reminder that art becomes especially meaningful when it brings people together and gives expression to emotions that words sometimes cannot capture.

My first artistic offering taught me that art is not always about perfection, applause, or recognition. Sometimes, its greatest reward lies in the happiness of giving something meaningful to others.

And what could be more beautiful than offering one’s creativity at the feet of Maa Durga?

❤️ The Lion Within Us

Dear friends, as we celebrate Maha Navami, let us remember that the true significance of Maa Durga’s victory lies in its relevance to our everyday lives.

Each of us faces personal Mahishasuras—fear, dishonesty, jealousy, hatred, and self-doubt. These challenges may not appear in the form of a demon with many heads, but they can weaken our confidence, disturb our peace, and prevent us from becoming better human beings.

We may not carry celestial weapons, but we possess powerful tools of our own: kindness, patience, wisdom, courage, and compassion.

Whenever we stand up for someone who is being treated unfairly, forgive someone who has hurt us, or choose honesty when dishonesty seems easier, we take a small step towards defeating the darkness within and around us.

My humble painting is a small expression of a much larger feeling: gratitude for the opportunity to create, devotion to the Divine Mother, and joy in sharing something beautiful with my community.

As we look upon Maa Durga riding her majestic lion, let us remember that courage is not merely about fighting external battles. It is also about conquering our weaknesses and choosing the path of righteousness, even when that path is difficult.

“May Maa Durga bless us with the courage of a lion, the wisdom to choose the right path, and the compassion to make the world a kinder place.”

🙏 A Heartfelt Navami Wish

On this auspicious Maha Navami, I offer my humble prayers to Maa Durga and seek her blessings for all my dear friends and their families.

May she fill our lives with peace, our hearts with kindness, our minds with wisdom, and our spirits with unwavering courage.

May her divine light guide us through difficult times and inspire us to spread happiness wherever we go.

As I celebrate this beautiful festival and reflect on my first artistic offering to the Divine Mother, I realise that devotion can take many forms. Some express it through prayers, some through music, some through service, and others through art. What matters most is the sincerity of the heart behind the offering.

May we all discover our own ways of expressing gratitude and making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Happy Maha Navami! May Maa Durga’s blessings always be with you.

Jai Maa Durga! Jai Mata Di! 🌺🙏❤️
