How do you make time for self-care?
View all responses
Hello dear friends,
I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.
Today’s writing prompt question is very interesting:
“How do you make time for self-care?”
At first, this sounds like a simple question. But the more I think about it, the more meaningful it becomes.
We all say, “I don’t have time.” We have time for work, family, social media, television, shopping, meetings and countless other responsibilities. But when it comes to ourselves, we suddenly become very busy.
Perhaps the real question is not “Do I have time for self-care?” but “Do I consider myself important enough to make time for?”
❤️Self-Care Is Not Selfish
For many years, I believed that taking care of family and fulfilling professional responsibilities was enough. Like many people, I often put my own needs at the bottom of the list.
But retirement taught me an important lesson.
Self-care is not selfishness. It is self-respect.
When we take care of our body, mind and emotions, we become better companions, better family members and, most importantly, happier human beings.
As the saying goes:
“You cannot pour from an empty cup.”
We must fill our own cup before we can keep giving to others.

❤️My Morning Is My Me-Time
For me, self-care begins with the morning.
I like to start my day with some movement—walking, yoga, stretching, breathing exercises or simply spending time outdoors. A morning walk is not only exercise for my body; it is also a meeting with myself.
Sometimes I meet friends in the park. We talk, laugh, discuss everything from health to politics and occasionally solve problems that nobody asked us to solve!
That laughter is also medicine.
I have realised that self-care does not always need expensive equipment, luxurious holidays or a spa appointment. Sometimes, it needs only a pair of comfortable shoes and the willingness to step outside.

❤️Taking Care of the Mind
Physical fitness is only half of self-care.
Our mind also needs rest.
Meditation, deep breathing, music, reading, writing and spending a few quiet moments alone help me slow down the noise inside my head.
Writing has become particularly important to me after retirement. My blog and my poetry give my thoughts a place to go.
Sometimes, when I cannot explain something to another person, I explain it to my notebook.
And somehow, the heart feels lighter.
“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes—including you.”
We often remember to recharge our phones but forget to recharge ourselves.

❤️Doing What Makes the Heart Happy
Self-care also means making space for things we love.
For me, that includes writing, sketching, painting, swimming, playing table tennis, travelling and spending time with family.
Art, especially, has become a kind of meditation for me. When I hold a pencil or brush, I forget about the clock for a while.
That is another secret of self-care:
Do something that makes you forget to check the time.
❤️Learning to Say “No”
There is another form of self-care that becomes increasingly important as we grow older—learning to say no.
We don’t have to attend every gathering, answer every message immediately, solve everyone’s problems or explain every decision we make.
Sometimes, protecting our peace is more important than pleasing everyone.
“Your peace is more valuable than your need to be understood.”
We should not feel guilty about choosing peace.

❤️Self-Care After Retirement
Retirement has given me a different perspective on time.
Earlier, my calendar was controlled by office schedules, meetings and responsibilities. Today, I have more freedom to decide how I want to spend my day.
But freedom alone is not enough.
We must learn to use our time consciously.
A retired life should not mean sitting idle and waiting for time to pass. It can be a beautiful second innings—a time to exercise, learn, create, travel, reconnect and discover ourselves again.
❤️Small Steps, Every Day
I don’t believe self-care requires a perfect routine.
Some days I exercise more. Some days I write. Some days I simply sit quietly with a cup of tea and watch the world go by.
The important thing is consistency, not perfection.
Even thirty minutes of “me-time” can make a difference when it becomes a habit.
Because ultimately, self-care is not about adding more things to our already busy lives.
It is about asking ourselves:
“What does my body need?”
“What does my mind need?”
“What makes my heart happy?”
And then giving ourselves permission to listen.

❤️My Final Submission
Life is precious, and our time is limited.
We spend years taking care of everyone else. At some point, we must also take care of the person who has been walking beside us through every joy, failure, disappointment and success—
ourselves.
So, how do I make time for self-care?
I don’t wait for time to appear.
I make time.
Because self-care is not something we do when we have nothing else to do.
It is something we do because we matter.
And perhaps that is the most important investment we can make in our Golden Years.
“Take care of yourself. You deserve to be cared for too.”

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE

I love this, Mr. Verma! The Vijay image is excellent too!
I integrate wellness into each day, but it has been something I have had to work on for years!

Thank you so much! 😊 I’m glad you liked the image. And I completely agree—wellness is not something we achieve once and then forget about; it is something we keep practicing, one day at a time.
The fact that you’ve worked on it for years makes it even more meaningful. Small, consistent habits eventually become a way of life. Here’s to continuing that journey with patience, balance, and a little joy along the way!

Self-care is not a luxury; it is an act of self-respect. When we consciously make time for our body, mind, and inner peace, we enrich not only our own lives but also the lives of those around us.

Absolutely true. 🌿 Self-care is not selfish or indulgent; it is how we preserve the energy, peace, and strength we need to live well and be present for others.

I agree with Sheila, I really like the Vijay image with the personal qualities. It’s useful sometimes to think of our own values.
You touched on so many important points in your post … the need for self-care, the need to consider ourselves important enough to look after ourselves and meet our needs. After all, as you said, if we don’t care for ourselves, we’ll burn out and be unable to care for others in the way we wish. Also, generally people can be selfish, focused on their own needs/interests and not think about you. And the more we give, the more they expect. You become the person they will always go to because you never say no. We might worry about offending someone/upsetting them by saying no, but that rarely happens. Great piece, Vijay, and i think a message for all ages.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and encouraging words. ❤️ I’m glad the image and the personal qualities connected with you. Sometimes, simply pausing to reflect on our own values can teach us a lot about how we live and what we need.

Absolutely! 🍀 Self-care is not selfish—it is how we maintain balance, protect our peace, and show ourselves the same respect and kindness we so readily give to others.
Thank you so much for your lovely words and encouragement. 🙏

Lots of wisdom here, thanks for sharing. Society and the media are very good at keeping us busy, distracted and preoccupied but we absolutely must ‘make time’ for self care, making our peace, health and quality time for ourselves a priority because it matters more than we realise ✨ ✨

Thank you so much for your thoughtful words.
I completely agree—life can easily keep us busy while we forget the person who needs our attention most: ourselves.
Self-care is not selfish; it is a way of protecting our peace, health, and inner balance.
When we make time for ourselves, we are better prepared to enjoy life and be there for others too. ✨🙏
