I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt question is very interesting:

“What’s a place you visited that felt like home?”

At first, the question made me pause.

How can a place we merely visit feel like home?

Then I realised something beautiful—home is not always the place where we have an address. Sometimes, it is simply the place where our heart feels at peace.

“Home is not a place; it is a feeling.”

❤️When a City Becomes More Than a City

If I have to answer this question honestly, my answer would be Kolkata.

I was born in Bihar and spent an important part of my childhood there. Bihar will always remain connected to my roots, my memories and my identity.

But Kolkata became a different kind of home.

I lived there for nearly twenty years. I worked there, raised my family there, made friends there, celebrated festivals there, travelled through its crowded streets and watched the city change with time.

Eventually, Kolkata stopped feeling like a place where I was posted.

It became a place where I belonged.

There is something wonderfully comforting about returning to a familiar street, recognising an old shopkeeper, hearing the familiar sounds of traffic, seeing people rushing towards their daily lives and knowing exactly where you want to have your evening tea.

These little things quietly build a relationship between a person and a city.

❤️The Comfort of Familiarity

What makes a place feel like home?

Is it the house?

The food?

The people?

The language?

Perhaps it is all of these—and something more difficult to explain.

When we travel, we are often attracted by beautiful mountains, beaches, monuments and landscapes. We take photographs and collect memories.

But sometimes, the most powerful memory is not a spectacular view.

It is a feeling of familiarity.

A cup of tea at a roadside stall.

A friendly smile from a stranger.

A peaceful walk in a familiar neighbourhood.

The sound of children playing.

A sunset that somehow reminds you of another evening many years ago.

These ordinary moments can make an unfamiliar place strangely intimate.

“Some places are visited by the feet; others are remembered by the heart.”

❤️Home Is Where the Heart Rests

As we grow older, our definition of home changes.

When we are young, home may mean our parents, our childhood room, our school and the neighbourhood where we played.

Later, home becomes associated with our spouse, children, responsibilities and memories.

And after retirement, perhaps we begin to understand that home is also about peace.

• A place where we can slow down.
• A place where nobody expects us to prove anything.
• A place where we can simply be ourselves.

That is why I believe a place can feel like home even if we did not grow up there.

❤️More Than Bricks and Walls

I have travelled to beautiful places and experienced breathtaking moments. The mountains of Sikkim, the beaches, spontaneous journeys and family trips have all left beautiful footprints in my memory.

But the places that stay with us forever are not necessarily the most beautiful ones.

• They are the places where we laughed.
• Where we loved.
• Where we struggled.
• Where we changed.
• Where somebody welcomed us.

And sometimes, where we discovered a new version of ourselves.

“We don’t remember places only for what we saw there, but for who we became while we were there.”

❤️My Answer

So, if you ask me, “What’s a place you visited that felt like home?”

I would say Kolkata.

Perhaps because I did not merely visit Kolkata.

I lived it.

I gave the city some of my most productive years, and in return, it gave me friendships, memories, experiences and countless stories.

Today, wherever I travel, I enjoy discovering new places.

But there is something special about returning to a place that whispers:

“Welcome back. I remember you.”

And perhaps that is the real meaning of home.

Home is not always where we started our journey.

Sometimes, home is the place where our heart quietly decides to stay.
