Today’s prompt question is very interesting: “If you had to get a tattoo right now, what would it be and why?”
Being a senior citizen, I never really felt the urge to get a tattoo. In my younger days, the thought never crossed my mind. Perhaps I was too busy building a career, raising a family, meeting responsibilities, and simply finding my way through life.
Today, however, this question makes me pause and think.
If I were to get one now, I would not choose a fashionable design or something merely decorative. I would choose something meaningful—something that tells a story close to my heart.
❤️More Than Ink on the Skin
A tattoo is often seen as body art, but I believe it can also become a form of personal storytelling.
People tattoo names, dates, symbols, flowers, animals, quotations, or spiritual images. Behind each design, there is often a memory, a relationship, a belief, or an important chapter of life.
As the saying goes:
“The most meaningful tattoos are not written on the skin; they are written on the heart.”
That is the kind of tattoo I would want.
❤️What Would I Choose?
If I had to choose today, I think I would get a small pen or a simple fountain pen with a tiny rising sun beside it.
Why a pen?
Because writing has become an important part of my life. A pen represents my thoughts, memories, imagination, and the stories I have collected over the years. It reminds me that even after retirement, life does not have to become a blank page.
In fact, retirement opened another chapter for me—the chapter of writing, painting, poetry, blogging, and discovering new dimensions of myself.
The rising sun would represent something equally important: hope and new beginnings.
It would remind me that every morning offers another opportunity to learn, create, laugh, love, and begin again.
❤️A Tattoo of My Journey
At my age, I have learned that life is not simply about the number of years we have lived. It is about the experiences those years have given us.
There have been successes and failures, laughter and tears, friendships and separations, dreams fulfilled and dreams left unfinished.
Each experience has left an invisible mark on me.
Why, then, would I need a permanent mark on my skin?
Perhaps that is the irony of the question.
The deepest tattoos of my life are already there—in my memories, my relationships, my wrinkles, and my words.
“Our scars, memories, and lessons are the tattoos life gives us for free.”
❤️Would I Actually Get It?
Honestly, I am still not sure!
At this stage of life, I might admire the idea more than the tattoo itself. My body has already carried me through decades of adventures, responsibilities, disappointments, and joys. I don’t necessarily feel the need to decorate it.
But if I did take the plunge, I would keep it small and simple.
No elaborate artwork. No complicated design.
Just a pen and a rising sun.
Something that quietly says:
Keep writing. Keep creating. Keep hoping.
❤️The Tattoo That Matters Most
Perhaps this prompt is not really asking us about tattoos at all. It is asking us:
“What matters enough to you that you would want to carry its symbol forever?”
For someone, it might be a parent’s name. For another, a child’s birth date. Someone else might choose a spiritual symbol, a favourite quotation, or the image of a place that changed their life.
For me, it would be a reminder of the beautiful relationship between life and creativity.
I may never actually get that tattoo.
But I already carry its meaning with me.
And perhaps that is enough.
Because the best tattoos are not necessarily the ones visible on our skin.
They are the stories we carry in our hearts.

All good musings. Like you, I never got a tattoo, nor would I now. Given the wide variety and apparent haphazard nature of many tattoos it would be interesting to hear how they were chosen by those they adorn. My son, for instance got a tattoo sleeve in his mid 30s, honouring the pets that have loved and lost. That makes sense to me. Happy Sunday. Allan
