Hello dear friends, I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.
Today’s writing prompt asks a deceptively simple question: “Which is the best restaurant in your city?”
At first, |The Best Restaurant in My City Is the One I Remember“ I thought the answer should be easy. Perhaps it should be a famous restaurant with exquisite food, elegant décor, excellent service, and a menu that makes your mouth water.
But then I travelled back in time—nearly fifteen years—to Kolkata.
And suddenly, I knew my answer.
The best restaurant in my city is not necessarily the one with the finest cuisine. For me, it is the place that served something much more precious: memories.

❤️A Journey Back to Kolkata
Fifteen years ago, I was posted at the Main Branch in Kolkata. The branch was always buzzing with activity, deadlines, customers, files, and the familiar rhythm of banking life.
But our Branch Manager, whom we affectionately called Saheb, understood something important: colleagues should not remain colleagues forever.
He believed that friendship and camaraderie could make a workplace warmer and more human.
So he started a wonderful tradition.
Every fourth Saturday, all ten officers would gather for a cocktail party. Our destination was fixed—the iconic Bluefox Restaurant.
Those evenings became something we looked forward to throughout the month.
“Some places remain in our memories not because of what we ate, but because of what we felt there.”

❤️The Blue Lagoon That Became a Memory.
Everyone had a favourite drink. Some preferred beer, others whiskey, and some enjoyed wine.
My choice was unmistakable: the Blue Lagoon.
Its brilliant blue colour immediately caught the eye. Sweet, citrusy, refreshing, and served cold, it seemed almost designed for an evening of relaxation.
But today, when I think of the Blue Lagoon, I don’t really remember its taste.
I remember the people sitting around the table.
That is the strange magic of memory. With the passage of years, flavours disappear, menus change, restaurants close, and buildings may be demolished. Yet the emotions attached to them somehow remain.
“A meal may satisfy the appetite, but good company feeds the soul.”
❤️When Colleagues Became Friends
As the evening progressed, something beautiful happened.
The boundaries of the office gradually disappeared.
We stopped talking about targets, customers, files, and official responsibilities. We talked about our families, dreams, worries, ambitions, and sometimes our failures.
There was laughter—plenty of it.
There were jokes, teasing, stories, and occasional serious conversations. Personal problems were discussed over starters and solutions were sometimes discovered between courses.
For a few hours, we were no longer simply ten officers working in the same branch.
We were ten human beings sharing a little piece of life.
“The best conversations are often born around a table where nobody is watching the clock.”

❤️The Bill That Taught Us Something
Then came the inevitable moment—the bill!
Sometimes it was substantial. And I, perhaps carried away by the atmosphere, was often among the first to offer to pay.
But Saheb had a different philosophy.
The next morning, the total bill would be divided equally among all of us.
At first, it seemed like a small practical arrangement. But with hindsight, I realise there was a lesson hidden inside it.
It was about equality, fairness, and shared responsibility.
Nobody was more important than anyone else when the bill arrived.
We had shared the evening together, so we shared the responsibility too.
“True friendship is not about who pays the bill; it is about who stays when life presents the difficult ones.”
❤️The Restaurant May Close, But Memories Don’t
Bluefox eventually shut its doors.
The restaurant disappeared, but its place in my personal history remains firmly open.
That is why I find the question, “Which is the best restaurant in your city?”, more profound than it initially appears.
The best restaurant isn’t always the one with the highest ratings, the grandest interiors, or the most expensive menu.
Sometimes it is a modest place where you celebrated a promotion.
Sometimes it is the café where you met an old friend after years.
Sometimes it is the restaurant where you took your parents, spouse, or children for a special meal.
And sometimes, like my Bluefox, it is where colleagues became friends.
“Restaurants serve food, but memories are what we carry home.”

❤️My Favourite Restaurant Is a Feeling
Today, if someone asks me about my favourite restaurant in Kolkata, I smile.
I could name several wonderful places. But deep inside, my answer remains Bluefox.
Not because it was necessarily the finest restaurant in Kolkata.
Not because its food was extraordinary.
Not even because of my beloved Blue Lagoon.
It is because Bluefox gave me something that no menu could offer—a collection of beautiful Saturday evenings filled with friendship, laughter, trust, and belonging.
Years have passed. People have moved on. Life has taken all of us along different roads.
But somewhere in the corridors of memory, ten officers are still sitting around a table, raising their glasses and laughing together.
And perhaps that is what makes a restaurant truly great.

❤️Raise Your Glass to Your Own Bluefox
So, dear friends, when you think about the best restaurant in your city, don’t only think about food.
Think about people.
Think about the table around which you laughed until your cheeks hurt. Think about the meal you shared with someone you loved. Think about the place where an ordinary evening unexpectedly became an unforgettable memory.
Because the best restaurant may not be the one that serves the best food.
It may simply be the place where your heart was happiest.
“The finest restaurants are not measured by the richness of their menus, but by the richness of the memories they leave behind.”
And if you are lucky enough to have found such a place, raise your glass.
- To friendship.
- To laughter.
- To old memories.
And to all those wonderful restaurants that, for a little while, became home.
Cheers to your Bluefox—and to the memories that never close their doors.

What a beautiful, heartfelt piece! Verma ji, you’ve truly captured the essence of what makes a place special—it’s never just about the food, but about the people and moments we share there. Your words about Bluefox transported me right to those Saturday evenings, raising a glass of Blue Lagoon alongside you and Saheb. The way you’ve woven together memory, friendship, and that quiet lesson in equality through the bill-splitting tradition is simply brilliant. This isn’t just a restaurant review; it’s a love letter to camaraderie and the fleeting, precious moments that shape our lives. Thank you for reminding us that the best tables are the ones where laughter flows as freely as the drinks, and where colleagues become family. Cheers to Bluefox, to Saheb’s wisdom, and to all the memories that never close their doors!

What a wonderful and generous response! Thank you so much for seeing beyond the restaurant and recognising the deeper emotion behind the story. Bluefox was never merely a place to eat or drink—it became a little chapter of friendship, laughter, and togetherness in our professional journey. Your words have brought those Saturday evenings alive once again.
And yes, the memories may be old, but thankfully, they never close their doors. Cheers to Bluefox, Saheb, and the beautiful camaraderie that made those evenings unforgettable! 🥂😊

What a beautiful reminder that the best places in our lives are rarely measured by their menus.
Sometimes a restaurant becomes unforgettable because, for a few precious hours, it gives us something no chef can prepare a sense of belonging. The food is consumed, the glasses are emptied, the bill is paid, and eventually even the restaurant disappears… but the laughter around the table somehow refuses to leave.
I especially loved the thought that ten colleagues slowly became ten human beings sharing a little piece of life. Perhaps that is the real meaning of friendship: not merely sharing a table, but becoming part of one another’s memories.
Bluefox may have closed its doors, but your words have opened another door the one through which the past quietly walks back in.
Some restaurants serve meals.
A very few serve memories.
And the rarest ones become a small, beautiful address in the heart. ❤️

Thank you so much for this beautifully expressed reflection. Your words have captured the very essence of what I was trying to convey through my Bluefox memories. Indeed, some places disappear from the map but remain permanently marked on the heart. And perhaps the greatest luxury a restaurant can offer is not what it serves on a plate, but the memories it leaves behind.
Your phrase “a small, beautiful address in the heart” is especially touching. Thank you for adding another beautiful layer to my memory. 🙏

What a beautiful reminder that sometimes the best restaurants aren’t about the food at all they’re about the people sitting across the table. 🤍Bluefox may have closed its doors, but clearly, its memories never did. Loved the warmth, nostalgia, and friendship woven through this beautiful story. Cheers to our own little Bluefoxes! 🥂🦋✨

Thank you so much for your beautiful words! ❤️ You’ve captured exactly what I hoped the story would convey. Restaurants may close their doors, but the laughter, conversations, friendships, and memories created around those tables can stay with us forever. Here’s to all our little Bluefoxes—the places that quietly become part of our lives.

This reframes the whole prompt beautifully. Your Bluefox and that Blue Lagoon aren’t really about the drink at all — they’re about ten people letting the office fall away for a few hours. Saheb splitting the bill equally the next morning is such a quietly wise touch. It’s exactly what we’ve found traveling too: the meals we remember years later are tied to the people we shared them with, not the menus. A lovely read.

Thank you so much for this beautiful reflection. 😊 You’ve captured exactly what I was trying to convey—the drink was merely a part of the story; the real richness was in the people, the laughter, and those precious hours when the office and its pressures seemed to disappear.
And yes, Saheb’s simple gesture of splitting the bill equally the next morning added a quiet lesson in friendship and togetherness. Looking back, I realise that the best meals are rarely remembered for their menus. They stay with us because of who sat across the table, who shared the laughter, and how we felt in that moment.

Oh, that would be a tough one, but like you, I do not always equate best restaurant with best food. We had one here called the Creperie, which was novel for our area when it first opened. It became the place to take a date if you wanted to impress her. It worked and we got married, but that was not the end of the place. We continued to go back for anniversaries, Valentines Day, special birthdays, both as a couple and with friends. The last time we went back, the place was showing its age, the furniture was getting rickety and the food was not quite as good as we remembered it, but the atmosphere was still there and we enjoyed the evening with each other. It is now gone, but not forgotten. The memories are still there to enjoy. Happy weekend. Allan

What a beautiful story, Allan! 😊 The Creperie clearly became much more than a restaurant—it became a little chapter in your love story.
I especially love your thought that the best restaurant isn’t always the one with the best food. Sometimes it is the place where memories are cooked, shared, and lovingly preserved. The furniture may have become rickety and the food may have lost some of its old magic, but the atmosphere—and the memories you created there—remained timeless.

Haha! Then the story has done its job. 😊 Sometimes a simple mention of food opens the door to an entire room full of memories.
I hope you find yourself a delicious crepe soon—and perhaps, with the first bite, a beautiful old memory comes along for dessert. 🥞
