# Inspired by Timeless Words #

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite quote?

Hello dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt asks a thought-provoking question: “What is your favorite quote?” At first glance, it seems like a simple question.

But when we think deeply, we realize that a single quote can shape our mindset, inspire our actions, and even change the course of our lives.

Among the countless inspiring words spoken by great thinkers, philosophers, scientists, and leaders, one quote has always touched my heart:

Be the change you wish to see in the world.
— Mahatma Gandhi

Though simple in words, it carries profound wisdom. It reminds us that instead of waiting for the world to become better, we should begin with ourselves.

In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to complain.

We complain about corruption.
We complain about pollution.
We complain about selfishness.
We complain about negativity.

But how often do we ask ourselves:

“Am I contributing to the solution?”

Gandhi’s timeless words gently shift our focus from blaming others to improving ourselves.

  • If I want kindness, I should be kind.
  • If I desire honesty, I should practice honesty.
  • If I want peace, I must first create peace within myself.

Real transformation always begins with one person.

Many people believe they need extraordinary power to change society.

History tells a different story.

Every great movement began with one courageous individual who dared to take the first step.

A smile can brighten someone’s difficult day.

Planting one tree helps the environment.

Helping one child receive an education changes an entire future.

Encouraging one depressed friend may save a life.

Never underestimate the ripple effect of small acts of goodness.

As Mother Teresa beautifully said,

“Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.”

Isn’t that another way of saying the same thing?

Many people collect inspiring quotes.

Some write them in diaries.

Others share them on social media.

But a quote becomes meaningful only when it becomes a part of our daily life.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson wisely observed,

“What you do speaks so loudly that I cannot hear what you say.”

Actions give life to words.

Without action, even the greatest quote remains only ink on paper.

Throughout my journey, several quotes have become silent companions.

Albert Einstein reminded us:

“Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving.”

Whenever life becomes difficult, these words encourage me not to stop.

Thomas Edison inspired perseverance:

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

Failure is not the opposite of success; it is part of success.

And one of my all-time favorites by Swami Vivekananda continues to ignite courage:

“Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Every one of these quotes teaches resilience, determination, and hope.

Retirement has taught me something precious.

Life is not measured by how much we accumulate but by how much we contribute.

Whether I am writing blogs, creating sketches, reading books, practising yoga, or simply encouraging someone through a kind comment, I try to remember Gandhi’s words.

Positive change does not always require grand speeches.

Sometimes it begins with listening patiently.

Sometimes with forgiving someone.

Sometimes by expressing gratitude.

Sometimes by choosing kindness when anger feels easier.

Character is built through countless small choices made every single day.

Interestingly, our favorite quote often changes as we grow older.

During youth, we seek ambition.

In middle age, we seek balance.

As experience matures us, we seek wisdom and inner peace.

That is the beauty of quotations.

They continue to reveal new meanings at different stages of life.

Perhaps that is why they never become old.

We grow into them.

If someone asked me to choose only one guiding principle for life, I would still choose Gandhi’s immortal words:

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Because every lasting change begins with a single decision.

  • A decision to become a little kinder.
  • A little wiser.
  • A little more patient.
  • A little more compassionate than yesterday.

As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu beautifully said,

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

So, dear friends, let us not wait for the world to become perfect.

Let us become the reason someone smiles today, feels hopeful tomorrow, and believes in humanity forever.

After all, the greatest quote is not the one we admire—it is the one we choose to live by.

What is your favorite quote, and how has it influenced your life? I would love to read your thoughts in the comments.

BE HAPPY… BE ACTIVE… BE FOCUSED… BE ALIVE

  4. Verma ji, this is truly a beautiful and heartfelt reflection. Your words carry the weight of genuine experience, and I find myself nodding along with every paragraph.

What struck me most was your observation about how our favorite quotes evolve with us—how ambition gives way to balance, and balance eventually leads to wisdom. That insight alone is worth pondering.

Gandhi’s words are timeless, but it’s your interpretation that brings them to life: “If I want kindness, I should be kind.” So simple, yet so profound.

I also deeply appreciate how you connected the ripple effect of small actions to the daily choices we make—listening patiently, forgiving, expressing gratitude. In a world that often celebrates grand gestures, your reminder that quiet consistency matters more is a gentle and necessary truth.

And I couldn’t agree more with your closing thought—that the greatest quote is not the one we admire, but the one we live by. That’s a challenge worth embracing every single morning.

As for my favorite quote—one that has walked with me through both calm and stormy seasons—is from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.:

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

It reminds me that even when progress feels painfully slow, hope is not misplaced. And that every small act of integrity, kindness, and courage adds its weight to that great bend.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom today, Verma ji. Your blog was not just a reflection—it was a gift.

Keep writing. Keep sketching. Keep planting seeds of goodness.

And yes, I’ll remember: “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

    With gratitude,
    Srikanth

  7. I really enjoyed reading this. It’s fascinating how the quote that speaks to us most often reflects the stage of life we’re in.

One of my favourite quotes is:

“Honesty is an expensive gift. Don’t expect it from cheap people.” — Warren Buffett

To me, it’s a reminder not to be disappointed when people don’t give what they’re not capable of giving. Instead of expecting honesty, integrity or kindness from everyone, I try to appreciate it deeply when I find it.

Another quote I come back to often is:

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

It reminds me that our lives aren’t shaped by one big decision, but by the small choices we make every day. Those tiny actions create the ripple effect you wrote about so beautifully.

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful post.

    • Thank you so much for your thoughtful and beautifully articulated response. I truly enjoyed reading your reflections. You’re absolutely right—our favourite quotes often evolve as we journey through different stages of life, quietly reflecting our changing perspectives and experiences.

I especially appreciate the two quotes you shared. The Warren Buffett quote is a wise reminder to temper our expectations and value honesty all the more when we encounter it. And the second quote has always been one of my favourites as well. It beautifully illustrates how our thoughts and daily choices gradually shape our character and, ultimately, our destiny.

  8. Some words are meant to be admired; others are meant to be lived. Your beautiful reflection gently reminds us of the difference.

A quote becomes immortal not because it is repeated through generations, but because it quietly transforms the heart of the one who embraces it. Gandhi’s timeless wisdom, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” is not merely an invitation to improve society it is a sacred call to cultivate the garden within ourselves, where every act of kindness, every moment of forgiveness, and every compassionate choice becomes a seed of a better world.

I was especially touched by your thought that “the greatest quote is not the one we admire it is the one we choose to live by.” That single sentence carries the essence of a life well lived. True wisdom is never measured by the number of inspiring words we collect, but by the quiet transformation those words awaken in our daily actions.

Thank you, Vijay, for reminding us that the most enduring revolutions begin in the silence of an honest heart. May we all strive not merely to quote greatness, but to embody it one humble step, one gentle word, and one compassionate deed at a time.

With warm regards and deep appreciation,

    Vijay Srivastava

I was especially touched by your beautiful insight that a quote becomes immortal not because it is repeated, but because it transforms the heart of the one who lives it. That is a profound truth, and you expressed it with remarkable grace.
