Today’s writing prompt is wonderfully nostalgic:
“Do you think everything happens for a reason?”
My answer is a heartfelt yes.
Of course, not every event makes sense the moment it happens. Some experiences leave us confused, disappointed, or even heartbroken.
But when we pause, look back, and connect the dots, we often realize that life was quietly leading us toward something better than we had imagined.

A Dream That Didn’t Come True
I have experienced this truth firsthand.
As a young student, my dream was to become an engineer. Like thousands of ambitious students, I devoted countless hours to preparing for engineering entrance examinations.
My hopes were high, and my future seemed clearly mapped out.
Then came the result.
I failed to secure admission.
For a young student, it felt like the end of the road. I was deeply disappointed. It seemed as though all my hard work had gone in vain.
Looking back today, I realize that disappointment was not the end of my story—it was merely the beginning of another chapter.
An Unexpected Turn
Instead of engineering, I qualified for admission to an Agricultural Institution. It was certainly not what I had planned.
Coming from a non-farming background, agriculture was an unfamiliar field for me. Yet it offered a technical education, and rather than losing an academic year, I decided to embrace the opportunity.
At that time, I had no idea that this single decision would shape the rest of my professional life.
When Opportunity Knocked
As destiny would have it, a vacancy was later announced in the banking sector for Rural Development Officers. Candidates with agricultural qualifications were eligible to apply.
Encouraged by the opportunity, I appeared for the selection process.
Fortunately, I was selected.
That one unexpected turn changed everything.
I joined the banking industry and went on to spend 32 wonderful years serving with dedication, learning continuously, meeting remarkable people, and contributing to rural development.
Banking was far more than a profession for me—it became a journey of growth, responsibility, friendships, and countless unforgettable memories.
Even after retirement, the lessons, relationships, and experiences from those years continue to enrich my life.
Looking Back with Gratitude
Sometimes I wonder:
What if I had secured admission to engineering?
Perhaps I would have become an engineer. Perhaps I would have enjoyed that career too.
But I would have missed the incredible journey that banking offered me—the opportunity to serve society, empower rural communities, and discover abilities within myself that I never knew existed.
That is why I believe everything happens for a reason.
This doesn’t mean that every setback is pleasant or every disappointment is easy to accept.
Rather, it means that life often has a broader perspective than we do. While we focus on immediate goals, life quietly prepares us for opportunities we cannot yet see.
Wisdom from Great Thinkers
As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said:
“New beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.“
Similarly, the Roman philosopher Seneca observed:
“Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”
Both thoughts beautifully capture the essence of my own journey. I had prepared myself through education, and when an unexpected opportunity arrived, I was ready to seize it.
This reminds me of another timeless proverb:
“When one door closes, another opens.”
The challenge is that we often spend so much time staring at the closed door that we fail to notice the one that has quietly opened beside us.
Life’s Detours Often Lead to Better Destinations
Our lives are filled with similar examples. A missed train leads to meeting a lifelong friend. A rejected application opens the door to a better career.
A failed plan teaches resilience, patience, and wisdom that success alone could never provide.
Today, whenever young people tell me they are discouraged by failure, I encourage them not to lose hope.
A setback is not a verdict on your future. It is simply a redirection. Success rarely follows a straight line.
More often, it follows a winding path filled with unexpected turns that eventually lead us exactly where we are meant to be.
My Final Submission
Looking back over my own life, I no longer regret missing that engineering seat. Instead, I feel grateful. What once appeared to be failure became one of life’s greatest blessings.
Perhaps that is the beauty of life.
We may not understand its reasons today.
But someday, looking back, we often discover that every twist, every delay, every disappointment, and every unexpected opportunity was quietly weaving the masterpiece of our journey.
After all, life doesn’t always give us what we ask for.
Sometimes, it gives us something far better.
