Dinner with Vijay: A Conversation Beyond the Silver Screen

Daily writing prompt
If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?

Hello dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

Today’s writing prompt instantly captured my imagination: “If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would it be?”

It is one of those delightful questions that transports us into the magical world of stories, where unforgettable characters continue to live in our hearts long after the final page is turned or the credits roll.

After giving it some thought, I chose Vijay, the unforgettable character portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan in the classic Hindi film Deewaar.

Though Amitabh Bachchan is a legendary actor in real life, Vijay is a fictional character whose courage, inner conflicts, and unwavering determination have inspired generations of movie lovers.

Sharing dinner with him would be far more than meeting a film character—it would be an opportunity to understand the struggles of a man shaped by hardship, loyalty, and difficult choices.

Vijay’s life is a reminder that circumstances often shape people in unexpected ways.

Born into poverty and forced to face humiliation from an early age, he grows into a man who believes that strength is the only protection against an unforgiving world.

Over dinner, I would ask him whether he ever wished life had taken a different path. Did he ever imagine a future where love, peace, and family mattered more than power and wealth?

His answers would surely reveal the emotional battles hidden beneath his tough exterior.

One of the greatest lessons from Deewaar is that success achieved without peace of mind is never complete. Vijay gains wealth and influence, yet he constantly carries the burden of loneliness and regret.

As someone who has spent over three decades in banking and now enjoys a fulfilling retired life, I have learned that true prosperity lies not only in financial security but also in relationships, integrity, and inner contentment.

I would love to discuss with Vijay what happiness truly means. Is it measured by the size of our house, the balance in our bank account, or by the love and respect we earn from others?

I believe our conversation would remind both of us that life’s richest treasures cannot be purchased.

Despite his flaws, Vijay possesses extraordinary courage. He refuses to surrender in the face of injustice and stands tall even when the odds are against him.

His determination inspires resilience, although his methods sometimes lead him astray.

I would tell him that courage shines brightest when guided by compassion and wisdom. Real heroes are those who overcome anger with forgiveness and revenge with understanding.

Perhaps our dinner conversation would become a dialogue between youthful rebellion and mature reflection.

I imagine the dinner taking place in a quiet restaurant overlooking the sea as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon.

There would be no flashing cameras, no dramatic background music, and no crowd of admirers—just two people enjoying a simple Indian meal.

We might begin with hot tomato soup, followed by soft rotis, dal, seasonal vegetables, and a comforting serving of rice.

To finish, perhaps a bowl of kulfi or gulab jamun would sweeten the evening while we exchanged stories about life, family, dreams, and destiny.

Sometimes the simplest meals create the deepest conversations.

Stories have an extraordinary power to teach us without preaching. Fictional characters often reflect real human emotions, reminding us of our own strengths and weaknesses.

If I had the privilege of sharing dinner with Vijay, I would not seek autographs or famous dialogues.

Instead, I would treasure the opportunity to understand the heart behind the character—the fears, hopes, sacrifices, and choices that made him unforgettable.

As the evening came to an end, I would thank him for reminding me that every person carries an untold story, and every decision shapes the legacy we leave behind.

After all, the greatest conversations are not about fame or fortune—they are about humanity.

If you could have dinner with any fictional character, who would you choose, and what question would you ask first? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.

I can completely understand your feelings. Amitabh Bachchan has that rare aura that leaves people speechless. His portrayal of Vijay is truly timeless, and his grace, humility, and commanding presence on Kaun Banega Crorepati have earned him admiration across generations.

You were fortunate to meet him in person—what a memorable experience that must have been! Sometimes, silent admiration says more than words ever can.

  3. What a beautiful, reflective piece, Verma ji! Your choice of Vijay from Deewaar is so poignant—he truly represents the timeless struggle between ambition and inner peace. I love how you’ve framed the dinner not as a fan meeting a star, but as two souls sharing wisdom across generations. The setting you described—quiet restaurant, sea view, simple dal-roti—feels so warm and authentic. It’s the kind of meal where walls come down and real conversations happen.

Your reflection on success and contentment really struck me. After three decades in banking, you’ve clearly gained the kind of clarity that Vijay spent his life chasing. The line “true prosperity lies not only in financial security but also in relationships, integrity, and inner contentment” is pure gold—and so needed in today’s world.

If I may add my own thought: your imagined conversation reminds me that even the most hardened characters have a soft core, and that Deewaar’s real lesson isn’t about revenge or wealth, but about what we leave behind for those we love. Vijay’s story is a mirror, and you’ve held it up with grace.

As for me—I think I’d choose Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings. And I’d ask him, “What do you fear most when guiding mortals?” Because even wizards must grapple with doubt.

Thank you for sharing this Verma ji—it made my evening feel richer. Looking forward to more such reflections from you! 🙏

Vijay from Deewaar is such a rich choice — a character whose success comes wrapped in loneliness gives you so much to actually talk about over dinner. Your line that success achieved without peace of mind is never complete, drawn from three decades in banking, lands with the weight of lived experience rather than a movie moral. And I love that you’d want a quiet seaside meal — tomato soup, rotis, dal, kulfi — over any starry restaurant; some of our best conversations while traveling have happened at exactly that kind of simple table at sunset. My own answer: Samwise Gamgee, and I’d ask him where he found the courage to keep walking.

    • Thank you so much for your wonderfully thoughtful comment. 🙏😊

Your words truly touched me. I’m especially glad that the line about success and peace of mind resonated with you. Over the years, I’ve come to realize that while careers may bring achievements, it is inner contentment and meaningful relationships that make life truly successful.

I also loved your reflection about the simple seaside meal. You’re absolutely right—some of life’s most memorable conversations happen not in luxurious places, but around humble tables, with good food, a beautiful sunset, and genuine company.

And what a marvelous choice—Samwise Gamgee! His quiet courage, unwavering loyalty, and ability to keep hope alive in the darkest moments make him one of literature’s greatest heroes. Your question is a beautiful one, and I can almost imagine Samwise answering with his characteristic humility, reminding us that love, friendship, and a promise kept can carry us farther than we ever thought possible.
