“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.”
Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood.
Today’s writing prompt is both delightful and thought-provoking: “What’s a movie or book that inspired you to travel?”
Books and movies have a magical ability to transport us to places we have never visited.
Through vivid descriptions and breathtaking visuals, they awaken our curiosity, introduce us to diverse cultures, and often leave us longing to experience those destinations in person.
While travel broadens our horizons, sometimes it is a story that first opens the door to that journey.

The Power of Stories to Inspire Travel
Long before we pack our suitcases, we often travel in our imagination. A compelling novel can paint landscapes so vividly that we can almost smell the mountain air or hear the waves crashing against the shore.
Likewise, a beautifully filmed movie can transform an unfamiliar destination into a dream waiting to be fulfilled.
Stories remind us that every place has its own history, traditions, cuisine, and people. They encourage us to step outside our comfort zones and embrace the unknown.
The Movie That Inspired Me: The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
One film that deeply inspired my desire to travel is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The movie follows an ordinary man who spends much of his life dreaming instead of living. When circumstances force him into an unexpected adventure, he journeys through breathtaking landscapes in Iceland, Greenland, and the Himalayas.
The stunning cinematography captured snow-covered mountains, roaring waterfalls, endless roads, and peaceful villages. More importantly, the film conveyed a powerful message: life truly begins when we dare to leave our comfort zone.
One of my favorite lines from the movie is:
“To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, to draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life.”
That message resonates deeply with anyone who believes that experiences are richer than possessions.

The Book That Sparked Curiosity: Around the World in Eighty Days
Among books, Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne has always fascinated me.
Although written more than a century ago, it celebrates adventure, determination, and curiosity. The protagonist’s incredible journey across continents reminds readers that the world is vast, diverse, and full of surprises.
As I turned each page, I imagined bustling cities, majestic oceans, railways, deserts, and different cultures. The book encouraged me to see travel not merely as sightseeing but as a lifelong education.
It taught me that every journey is filled with unexpected lessons and unforgettable memories.

My Own Travel Experiences
Fortunately, retirement has given me more opportunities to explore different parts of India.
From the peaceful hills of Gangtok and the historic beauty of Nathula Pass to the scenic beaches of Visakhapatnam, every destination has enriched my life.
Walking through nature, interacting with local people, tasting regional cuisine, and learning about different traditions have made each journey meaningful.
Every trip reminds me that India itself is a treasure chest of diversity.
Every state offers something unique—its own language, architecture, festivals, food, and stories.
Travel has also made me more patient, adaptable, and grateful for life’s countless blessings.

Why Everyone Should Travel
Travel is not about luxury; it is about learning.
It teaches us that people may speak different languages, yet kindness is universally understood. It helps us appreciate both the similarities and differences among cultures.
Travel also reduces stress. A few days spent amidst mountains, rivers, forests, or historical monuments refresh both the body and mind. We return home with renewed energy, fresh perspectives, and cherished memories.
As Mark Twain wisely observed:
“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.”
Indeed, every meaningful journey makes us a little wiser and a little more compassionate.

My Final Submission
Whether inspired by a captivating movie or a timeless book, travel begins with curiosity. Stories ignite that curiosity, encouraging us to discover places beyond the pages and the screen.
You need not travel around the world to experience wonder. Sometimes a nearby village, a heritage site, a peaceful beach, or a mountain trail can teach us as much as an overseas adventure.
As I grow older, I value experiences far more than material possessions. Every journey adds another beautiful chapter to the story of life.
So, if a book or movie stirs your heart and whispers, “Go and see this place,” listen to that call. Pack your bags, embrace the unknown, and create memories that no photograph can fully capture.
After all, the greatest journeys begin with a single step—and sometimes, with a single page or a single scene.
“Travel far enough, you meet yourself.” — David Mitchell

What a beautiful and heartfelt piece, Verma ji! 👏
Your words transported me right alongside you—from the icy landscapes of Iceland with Walter Mitty to the timeless adventures of Phileas Fogg. I absolutely loved how you connected the dots between fiction and real-life exploration, and your reflection on India’s incredible diversity truly resonated with me. The way you describe travel as “not about luxury, but about learning” is something I’ll carry with me.
Also, that quote from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty gave me goosebumps! It’s one of those lines that stays with you long after the credits roll. And yes, retirement sounds like it’s given you the gift of time to collect memories rather than things—what a wonderful phase of life to be in!
Your journey through Gangtok, Nathula Pass, and Visakhapatnam sounds magical. I’d love to know: which of these destinations touched your heart the most, and why? Also, have you discovered any hidden gems in India that you feel are underrated?

Among the places I’ve visited, Gangtok and Nathula Pass hold a special place in my heart. The majestic Himalayas, the crisp mountain air, and the overwhelming sense of peace made the experience unforgettable. As for hidden gems, I believe places like Araku Valley and the serene villages of Sikkim deserve much more appreciation for their natural beauty and simplicity.

I couldn’t agree more. Travel has a remarkable way of breaking down barriers and replacing assumptions with understanding. When we experience different cultures, traditions, and ways of life firsthand, we realize that despite our differences, people everywhere share the same hopes, dreams, and emotions.

Walter Mitty is a wonderful answer — that film has sent a lot of people looking up flights to Iceland. But the part I keep thinking about is that retirement has let you explore India itself, from Nathula Pass to the beaches at Visakhapatnam. “Travel is not about luxury; it is about learning” is the whole thing in one line, and it’s a good reminder that the treasure chest is often much closer to home than we assume.
