Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood, with a cup of warm tea and a curious heart.
Today’s writing prompt stirred something within me—it asks, “What public figure do you disagree with the most?”
Now, let me begin by saying, disagreement is not disrespect. In a democracy and in life, holding a different view is not only healthy but essential for growth. It encourages dialogue, reflection, and, ultimately, progress.
So, who do I find myself disagreeing with the most? It is none other than Elon Musk—the billionaire entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter).

Let me explain.
The Genius I Admire, Yet Question
To be fair, I admire Elon Musk’s vision. He has revolutionized industries, from clean energy to aerospace, and continues to push the boundaries of what is humanly possible. His boldness is contagious. His capacity for innovation is legendary.
But here’s the irony: it is this very brilliance that makes his missteps more impactful—and, in my eyes, more troubling.
My disagreement lies not with his intellect or even his eccentricity, but with his public communication style, his recklessness on social media, and his approach to leadership in critical spaces.
1. Words Matter, Especially from the Influential
In recent years, Musk has turned Twitter (now X) into his personal megaphone. While freedom of expression is important, his tweets often come across as impulsive, insensitive, or misleading.
Whether it’s spreading misinformation during the pandemic, making offhand jokes about serious issues, or casually influencing stock markets with a tweet, the consequences are real.
A public figure of his stature must understand the weight of words. Millions listen. Billions can be impacted.
From influencing cryptocurrencies to mocking political leaders or downplaying mental health—his reach is vast, and sometimes, his tone careless.
As someone who grew up valuing restraint and responsibility in leadership—this troubles me deeply.

2. Leadership Beyond Technology
Musk’s vision for Mars colonization, electric transport, and AI advancement is undoubtedly ambitious. But in the rush to innovate, I sometimes feel he overlooks the human dimension.
For instance, several reports have emerged about poor work conditions in Tesla’s factories, long hours, union resistance, and intense pressure.
While innovation demands discipline, it must not come at the cost of compassion. A good leader uplifts people, not just profits.
I disagree with Musk’s notion that speed and disruption should always come before deliberation and empathy.
3. Democracy Needs Balance, Not Billionaire Influence
Another aspect I grapple with is the increasing political influence that billionaires like Musk wield. His acquisition of Twitter, in the name of “free speech,” has been controversial. The platform has become a battleground of opinions, often unchecked and unfiltered.
Do I believe in freedom of speech? Absolutely. But I also believe freedom must walk hand-in-hand with responsibility. When social platforms become echo chambers of misinformation, the very democracy we cherish is at risk.
I believe Musk’s approach lacks nuance. Free speech should empower the voiceless, not embolden the reckless.

Disagreeing With Hope
Despite my disagreements, I do not view Elon Musk as a villain. He is a complex figure—one who embodies both promise and peril.
In many ways, he is a mirror of our times: brilliant and bold, but sometimes blinded by ego and speed.
I hope that with time, Musk evolves into not just a pioneer of technology, but a champion of ethical progress. I hope he learns to temper his genius with grace, his power with prudence.
Finally, The Power of Civil Disagreement
Friends, we all hold opinions that may differ. But the essence of progress lies not in loud arguments, but in thoughtful disagreement. It’s okay to admire someone and still hold them accountable. That’s not disloyalty—it’s maturity.
Let us continue to celebrate innovation while standing firm on the values of humility, kindness, and shared humanity.
Thank you for reading, dear readers. I would love to hear your thoughts—who do you disagree with the most, and why? Let the discussion begin, with open hearts and open minds.
Warm regards,
Vijay Verma

A great and necessary distinction uncle. ‘Disagreement is not disrespect’ is the key to healthy public dialogue, and I appreciated your balanced critique of Musk.

Well said, dear—thank you.
That distinction really does carry a lot of weight. If we start treating every disagreement as disrespect, conversations shut down before they even begin.
With someone like Musk, it’s easy for discussions to swing to extremes, so keeping things balanced feels important. You can question ideas or decisions without dismissing the person entirely—and that space in between is where more honest dialogue can happen.

A thoughtfully written post Verma ji.
You have rightly pointed out that disagreeing doesn’t mean disrespect.
That’s the sign of healthy and vibrant democracy, of which India is the best example.
Moreover, people in powerful and influential positions should maintain a balance and be careful in their public statements.
Thank you for this insightful read, this morning.

Thank you for your thoughtful words—I truly appreciate you taking the time to reflect on it so carefully.
You’ve put it very well—disagreement, when expressed with respect, actually strengthens dialogue rather than weakening it. And yes, those in positions of influence do carry an added responsibility, as their words often shape larger conversations.
Glad the piece resonated with you. Wishing you a meaningful and positive day ahead 🙂

Still let compassion and empathy exist in business. Honest piece, Verma.

Thank you—I’m glad that resonated. It’s easy for business to become purely transactional, but without compassion and empathy, something essential gets lost.

this is a well-balanced, proportional critique of Elon Musk. You presented your premises and all are welcome to critique them if they wish. But your nuanced and careful language says much to your character and sense of responsibility at having a voice to speak on the internet. People like yourself should be the ones getting listened to instead of so-called journalists with inherent biases and indoctrinations. Mike (moderatelivingblog.com)

Thank you, Mike—I appreciate you taking the time to read and reflect so thoughtfully.
I think you’ve touched on something important: having a voice, especially online, comes with a certain responsibility. It’s less about being “right” and more about being fair, measured, and open to being challenged. That’s the only way conversations can stay meaningful rather than turning into noise.

that’s right Vijay. and that’s why as much as freedom of speech is an inherent right – we are now in a world where it is applied towards sophistry and disingenuous obstructionism.
i hope we can all get back to meaningful ways of discussion someday. i will write about it soon but my social group has decided to ostracize a friend we have known for 20-plus years because he cannot express his political critique without reverting to coarse language and logical fallacies. there can be no meaningful discussions with people like that.

I hear you—that kind of shift in discourse can feel really disheartening. When conversations slide into sophistry or personal attacks, it stops being about ideas and turns into noise.
At the same time, I’d tread a bit carefully with the idea that “there can be no meaningful discussions.” Sometimes people fall into coarse language or weak arguments not because they’re incapable of better, but because they’re reacting, feeling unheard, or stuck in a pattern. That doesn’t make it easy to engage—but it does leave a small window open.

you’re right Vijay and it actually occurred to me that our friend felt like he wasn’t being heard. So we tried to be patient. but in the end, it really was that he had changed and we felt the best thing to do was to let him cycle through his thoughts in private without the weight of our counter arguments forcing him into a corner.
it is sad that social media has really erupted into this state the last 16 or so years.

Verma ji, what a beautifully balanced and courageous piece! I truly appreciate how you’ve separated disagreement from disrespect—something so rare and precious in today’s loud discourse. Your ability to admire Elon Musk’s brilliance while thoughtfully critiquing his communication style, leadership ethics, and influence on democracy is a masterclass in intellectual honesty.
I was especially moved by your line: ‘Disagreement is not disrespect—it is maturity.’ That’s going to stay with me.
Thank you for reminding us that we can hold someone accountable without dehumanizing them. You’ve inspired me to reflect on who I disagree with—and more importantly, how I express that disagreement.
Looking forward to more such reflective writing from your pen. 🙏✨

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful and generous reflection—it truly means a lot.
I’m really glad that line stayed with you. In a space where conversations can so easily turn harsh, holding on to that distinction feels important—not just for others, but for our own clarity as well.

Absolute power corrupts absolute. I do not see this as happening.

That’s a thoughtful and balanced way of putting it. Hoping for growth in someone as influential as Elon Musk is fair—because the impact of his choices reaches far beyond just business.
At the same time, your hesitation is understandable. Power has a way of shaping behavior, and not always in the direction we hope. The idea that “absolute power corrupts” isn’t just a cliché—it reflects patterns we’ve seen time and again.

Thank you—I really appreciate that.
I think clarity matters, but so does the way we carry it. It’s easy to hold strong views; the harder part is expressing them without losing respect for others in the process.
Glad the balance came through. Your words mean a lot ✨
