This poem looks at the change from a carefree, instinctive life to one that is more careful and reserved. It shows how we often give up spontaneity for caution and lightness for responsibility over time.
However, beneath all the learning and restraint, a softer, freer part of ourselves remains, waiting to be found again.
# A Light Kind of Life #
There was a time
when life did not sit heavy on the chest,
when laughter came unannounced
and stayed as long as it pleased.
We ran through days like open fields,
feet unafraid of mud,
hands unafraid of falling—
because falling was never the end,
just a softer way of learning to rise.
The sky felt closer then,
as if we could reach it
without stretching too far,
as if dreams had wings.
Somewhere along the way,
we gathered weight—
in the form of words
like should and must,
in the quiet pressure of becoming
someone the world would understand.
Now everything is in place—
faces composed,
voices measured,
hearts carefully hidden—
yet something inside feels
unfamiliar.
I look at old photographs sometimes,
and there you are—
untouched by hesitation,
holding a smile
that knew nothing of tomorrow.
And I wonder…
when did we learn
to carry life
instead of letting it carry us?
Because once—
not too long ago—
we lived a life so light,
even the wind
could have been our home.

This is so tender and quietly powerful Verma ji… 🤍 The way it captures the shift from carefree innocence to the weight of “shoulds” feels deeply real. That last line stays with you “even the wind could have been our home”… beautiful and haunting. ✨

Thank you so much for such a tender reflection. 🤍
I’m truly touched that the poem spoke to you in this way. That quiet shift you mention—the move from innocence to the weight of “shoulds”—is something I feel many of us carry, often without even realizing it.
I’m especially glad that line stayed with you… “even the wind could have been our home” came from a place of longing for that lost lightness we once knew.

Verma ji, this is absolutely beautiful. You’ve captured something so universal yet deeply personal—the quiet weight we all take on as we grow, and that tender, almost forgotten lightness we once knew. The line “when did we learn to carry life instead of letting it carry us?” stayed with me long after reading. Thank you for this gentle reminder that the free, soft part of us is never really lost—just waiting. Please keep writing. 🙏

I’m truly touched that the piece resonated with you in such a deep and personal way. That line stayed with me too while writing—it feels like a quiet question we all carry somewhere within us.
You’ve expressed it so beautifully—the idea that the softer, freer part of us never truly disappears… it simply waits, patiently, for us to return.

I’m really glad that line spoke to you—it’s a question that stayed with me too. Somewhere along the way, we start holding everything so tightly that we forget life also knows how to hold us.

This is such a poignant reflection on the weight of growing up.
It’s a beautiful reminder that even under all those layers of ‘should’ and ‘must,’ our truest, lightest selves are still there.
Truly moving

I’m truly glad to know that your day has been so productive and fulfilling. Working on revisions to a manuscript can be both demanding and rewarding, and it’s inspiring to hear that you’re so deeply engaged in the process. Those moments of focused work often bring the best clarity and refinement to a piece of writing.

Good morning, and thank you so much for your thoughtful message. 🙏
Your reflection is deeply moving. The idea that we can learn to carry life, rather than simply be carried by it, is both powerful and comforting. You’ve expressed so beautifully how the length of life can feel like a blessing or a burden depending on how we experience our days.
