# That Lighter Life #

This poem looks at how we change from being carefree to more cautious over time. It shows the small compromises we make while growing up, exchanging freedom for control and innocence for knowledge.

Still, the poem softly reminds us that our lighter, freer self is still there, waiting to be found.

# That Lighter Life #

We were not always like this—
careful with our words,
measured in our laughter,
afraid of spilling too much of ourselves
into the open.

There was a version of us
that did not hesitate—
that ran headfirst into the rain,
that wore mud like a badge,
that believed joy was something
you could never run out of.

But then we learned.

We learned to pause
before speaking,
to think before feeling,
to carry yesterday
like a warning for tomorrow.

We traded wonder
for understanding,
freedom
for control,
and in that quiet exchange,
something weightless slipped away.

Now we move differently—
as if every step must justify itself,
as if every smile must have a reason.

And yet,
in the stillness of certain moments,
when the world forgets to watch us,
there is a flicker—

a laugh that escapes too quickly,
a memory that refuses to stay buried,
a sudden urge to let go
without explaining why.

It is still there—
that lighter life,
waiting patiently
beneath everything we have become.

Not lost.
Just… covered.

  1. Dear Verma ji,

This is absolutely beautiful and deeply moving. The way you’ve captured that universal journey from carefree innocence to cautious adulthood is simply exquisite.

“We traded wonder for understanding, freedom for control” — these lines hit particularly hard because they speak such profound truth about growing up. We don’t even realize when these exchanges happen; they’re so quiet, so gradual.

But what I love most is the hope woven throughout. That final stanza—”It is still there—that lighter life, waiting patiently beneath everything we have become”—is such a gentle, comforting reminder. We carry our younger selves within us always, just beneath the surface.

The imagery throughout is stunning. Running headfirst into rain, wearing mud like a badge, that “laugh that escapes too quickly”… every word feels carefully chosen and perfectly placed.

Thank you for this tender reflection on what we gain, what we lose, and what remains. It stayed with me long after reading.

    With admiration,
    Srikanth

  2. Respected Verma Ji good evening.
Your poem is deeply moving and beautifully reflective. The way you’ve captured the transition from carefree innocence to thoughtful restraint is both subtle and profound. The closing lines “Not lost. Just… covered.” are especially touching and linger in the heart.
At present, I am on a pilgrimage to Mathura – Vrindavan, so due to time constraints I am unable to read everyone’s work in detail. I will certainly revisit your poem and share a more thoughtful response once I return. 🙏
