India Did It Again

Cricket has a way of reminding us that certainty is an illusion. In the shortest format of the game, momentum swings wildly, heroes emerge unexpectedly, and even the strongest teams can falter within a few overs.

And yet, on a magnificent night at the roaring Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India produced a performance so commanding that the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket seemed to momentarily bow before pure dominance.

In front of a thunderous crowd of 86,824 spectators, India defeated New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, becoming the first team in history to win three men’s T20 World Cups and the first to successfully defend the title.

It was not just a victory—it was a statement of supremacy.

The setting itself carried emotional weight. Ahmedabad had been the stage for heartbreak during the ICC Cricket World Cup Final 2023 on November 19, when India fell short despite a phenomenal campaign. That memory lingered in the background as the teams walked out under the lights.

But cricket, like life, often offers redemption.

When New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and chose to bowl first, it echoed that earlier final. Yet what followed this time was dramatically different.

A Powerplay for the Ages

India’s new explosive opening pair—Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson—turned the powerplay into a spectacle of fearless batting.

After a cautious start of 12 runs in the first two overs, the Indian openers unleashed a storm. They tore into New Zealand’s attack, dismantling the bowling plans with a stunning 98-run partnership in just 7.1 overs.

Abhishek Sharma, the world’s No.1 T20I batter, played an electrifying innings of 52 off just 21 balls, reaching his half-century in 18 balls, the fastest of the tournament—and in a World Cup final no less.

His audacious strokeplay included walking across his stumps to scoop and pull bowlers over the leg side, leaving the fielding side stunned.

By the end of the powerplay, India had amassed 92 runs from 44 balls, with New Zealand conceding eight wides, their most in a powerplay phase during the tournament.

The tone of the match had been set.

After Abhishek’s dismissal by Rachin Ravindra, another attacking force arrived at the crease: Ishan Kishan.

Kishan wasted no time. With crisp drives and inventive flicks, he raced to 54 off 25 balls, maintaining the relentless tempo of the innings.

At the other end, Sanju Samson played what may well be remembered as one of the greatest innings in a T20 World Cup final. His 89 off 46 balls was an exhibition of elegance and brutality combined.

Samson’s 33-ball half-century placed him in rare company alongside Shahid Afridi and Virat Kohli as players who have scored fifties in both the semifinal and final of a T20 World Cup.

By the 15th over, India had already crossed 200 runs, with broadcasters predicting a total close to 290.

For a brief moment, New Zealand found a window of opportunity. All-rounder James Neesham struck three times in the 16th over, dismissing Samson, Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession.

India went 16 deliveries without a boundary, slowing the momentum.

But just as hope flickered for New Zealand, Shivam Dube walked in and slammed the door shut.

In the final over bowled by Neesham, Dube hammered three fours and two sixes, propelling India to a colossal 255 for 5 in 20 overs—one of the highest totals ever in a T20 World Cup final.

Chasing 256, New Zealand needed a historic batting performance. For a brief period, it seemed possible.

Finn Allen and Tim Seifert began aggressively, and Seifert reached a quick 52 off 23 balls.

But India’s bowlers soon took control.

Spin all-rounder Axar Patel struck early, dismissing Allen and Glenn Phillips to break the backbone of the chase.

Then came the masterclass from India’s pace spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah.

Bumrah delivered a breathtaking spell of 4 wickets for just 15 runs, dismantling the middle order with deceptive slower balls and precise cutters. His victims included Ravindra, Neesham, Matt Henry, and Santner.

New Zealand collapsed to 159, handing India a 96-run victory.

This triumph marked India’s third ICC title in three years, following a long 11-year drought without a global trophy earlier in the decade. In that period, India lost only two matches across four ICC white-ball tournaments, a statistic that reflects extraordinary consistency.

More importantly, this victory symbolized the successful transition to a new generation of fearless T20 cricketers.

Players like Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson have ushered in a bold era of attacking cricket—an approach that blends aggression, skill, and tactical clarity.

On that unforgettable night in Ahmedabad, the roar of nearly ninety thousand fans echoed across the stadium and into cricketing history.

India had done more than win another trophy.

India had done it again. 🏆
