# Losing Myself in Creativity #

Daily writing prompt
What activities do you lose yourself in?

Hello dear friends,

Have you ever been so deeply absorbed in something that you completely forget about time? The clock keeps moving, yet you hardly notice, because your mind and heart are fully engaged in the moment.

That magical feeling—when the world fades away and only your passion remains—is truly one of life’s greatest joys.

When I read today’s writing prompt, “What activities do you lose yourself in?”, it instantly spoke to my heart. Without hesitation, I knew the answer.

For me, that beautiful sense of immersion comes whenever I begin writing or painting.

These creative pursuits allow me to step into a world where imagination flows freely and every brushstroke or written word becomes a small celebration of self-expression.

Writing and painting are not merely hobbies in my life; they are the quiet spaces where my thoughts gather, my emotions find form, and my creativity comes alive.

Retirement becomes a doorway to a new chapter

Retirement is often viewed as a time to slow down and rest after decades of work. For many people, however, it becomes a doorway to a new chapter—one filled with discovery, creativity, and personal fulfillment. For me, retirement was not an ending but a beginning.

When I first stepped away from my career in banking, I found myself at a crossroads. For decades, my world revolved around numbers, calculations, and financial transactions.

The routines of professional life had defined my daily rhythm. But once those responsibilities faded, I realized something profound: I had been given the gift of time.

And with that gift came a golden opportunity to explore what truly resonated with my heart.

That is when I turned deeply toward painting, drawing, and writing—activities that allow me to lose myself completely.

There is a fascinating concept psychologists call “flow.” It describes a state in which a person becomes so absorbed in an activity that time seems to disappear. The outside world fades away, and all that remains is the joy of the moment.

Flow happens when passion and concentration meet.

Artists feel it while creating a painting. Musicians feel it while playing a melody. Writers feel it while weaving words into stories. In those moments, creativity flows naturally and effortlessly.

For me, painting and writing are the doors through which I enter this magical state.

There is something deeply mesmerizing about placing a brush or pencil on paper. A blank canvas or page holds endless possibilities.

When I begin a painting or sketch, I often start with only a vague idea. But as the process unfolds, the artwork begins to evolve on its own. Colors blend, shapes emerge, and the piece slowly develops its own personality.

Hours can pass without my noticing.

Sometimes a single brushstroke transforms the entire composition. At other times, what begins as a random splash of color slowly grows into a meaningful scene.

Each painting becomes more than an image—it becomes a reflection of my thoughts, emotions, and imagination.

Sketching holds a similar magic. The simple act of pencil meeting paper can bring historical scenes, landscapes, or imaginative ideas to life. Every line tells a story, every shadow adds depth.

Painting and sketching are also incredibly therapeutic. They calm the mind, reduce stress, and provide a sense of quiet satisfaction. In a world that often feels rushed and noisy, art offers a peaceful sanctuary.

While painting expresses feelings through color and form, writing allows me to explore the world through words.

Writing is like embarking on a journey of discovery. Sometimes I begin with a small idea or memory, and before I know it, the story unfolds into something larger and more meaningful.

When I sit down to write a poem, a blog, or a reflection, I become fully immersed in the process. The outside world disappears. Time slips quietly past.

There have been mornings when I started writing at sunrise, only to look up and realize that evening had already arrived.

Such is the magic of storytelling.

Writing also builds a bridge between my inner world and my readers.

When someone tells me that a poem touched their heart or that a story resonated with them, it brings an indescribable sense of fulfillment. In that moment, words become more than sentences—they become connections.

As each year draws to a close, I take time to reflect on my artistic journey. My art journal tells its own story.

Last year alone, it contained more than 850 sketches and drawings, each one capturing a moment of inspiration.

Although my initial goal was to create 1,000 sketches, the journey itself proved far more valuable than the number.

Every drawing taught me something about patience, observation, and creative discipline.

Reflection helps reveal both achievements and obstacles. It shows where passion flourished and where doubts appeared. Understanding these patterns helps me move forward with greater clarity and purpose.

The Joy of Painting and Writing

With the arrival of a new year comes renewed inspiration. This year my goal is to fill my art journal with 1,200 sketches and creative explorations.

I also hope to share more of my artwork digitally through short videos and online platforms.

This adds a new dimension to my creative journey. My sketches are no longer confined to the pages of a notebook—they can now reach a wider audience and inspire others.

Art, after all, is meant to be shared.

The beauty of life is that everyone has an activity that allows them to lose themselves in the moment.

For some, it may be gardening, cooking, music, dancing, or photography. For others, it might be reading, hiking, or solving puzzles.

The key is to discover what sparks that inner joy.

In our fast-paced world, it is easy to become trapped in routines and responsibilities. Yet making time for activities that ignite passion is essential for a balanced and meaningful life.

As I continue my journey through painting, sketching, and writing, I realize how fortunate I am to have found these creative outlets. They bring not only happiness but also purpose and peace.

Losing myself in art is not an escape from reality—it is a deeper way of embracing life.

So I leave you with the same question that inspired this reflection:

If you have not discovered them yet, explore new possibilities, revisit old hobbies, and allow curiosity to guide you.

Because life, like a blank canvas, is waiting for each of us to fill it with colors, stories, and the boundless magic of creativity.

It’s truly inspiring how you’ve embraced retirement not as an ending, but as a vibrant new beginning—a canvas waiting to be filled with color and meaning. Your description of the “flow” state while painting and writing captures something so magical and universal. The way you describe time dissolving as brush meets paper or words form sentences is exactly how creativity feels when it truly takes hold.

I love how you’ve set such an ambitious goal of 1,200 sketches this year! That’s wonderful. But even more beautiful is your recognition that “the journey itself proved far more valuable than the number.” That’s such a profound insight—one that applies to so many areas of life.

The way you connect your inner world with readers through writing, and how “words become more than sentences—they become connections,” is simply beautiful. Your art journal with its 850 sketches sounds like a treasure trove of memories and moments captured in time.

Your closing invitation for others to discover their own passions is so encouraging. Thank you for sharing not just your creative journey, but the philosophy behind it—that losing ourselves in creativity is actually “a deeper way of embracing life.”

May your brushes always find fresh inspiration and your words continue to touch hearts. Happy creating, Verma ji! 🎨✍️🌷🤝
