For many, favorite foods are tied to childhood memories. I am no exception. A simple plate of dal, rice, and ghee still comforts me in ways no gourmet dish ever could.
It reminds me of evenings around the family table, where laughter, conversation, and love seasoned the meal just as much as the spices did.

For me, it is the warmth of my mother’s cooking… and, occasionally, her playful scolding when I sneak the last piece of dessert before anyone else.😊

1. Butter Chicken with Garlic Naan – A Celebration of Togetherness
Our first and arguably most beloved meal is the classic butter chicken, served with warm, buttery garlic naan.
What makes this dish special isn’t just the rich, creamy tomato-based curry or the succulent marinated chicken—it’s the memories woven around it.
Butter chicken is synonymous with celebration. Whether it’s a festival, a birthday, or even a simple Friday evening, this dish appears almost magically on our dining table.
The preparation itself is a ritual. My mother marinates the chicken with yogurt, ginger, garlic, and a blend of spices, letting it rest for hours so every bite bursts with flavor.
The naan is rolled and cooked on the tava, puffing perfectly while filling the kitchen with its irresistible aroma.
The humor often comes in when my mischievous younger brother, who insists he “doesn’t like spicy food,” ends up eating three extra helpings after claiming,
“It’s okay, it’s only slightly spicy!” Laughter mingles with the aroma of butter chicken, making this meal a perfect blend of taste, tradition, and joy.

2. Aloo Paratha with Curd and Mango Pickle – The Ultimate Comfort Food
Next comes my personal comfort food: aloo paratha with curd and mango pickle. Warm, flaky parathas filled with spiced mashed potatoes, served with homemade white butter, cool curd, and tangy mango pickle—just writing about it feels therapeutic.
For me, this dish is more than a meal; it’s a memory. Lazy Sunday mornings, my mother rolling the dough with loving hands, the irresistible aroma wafting through the house—it’s the sound of laughter, the warmth of family, and the simplicity of love expressed through food.
I can’t forget the times when my father, in his “helpful” attempts to roll a paratha, would end up with a flattened pancake that looked more like a frisbee than bread! We’d all laugh until our sides hurt, only to devour it anyway because the taste of love was in every bite.
Everyone’s comfort food is tied to emotion. For some, it might be Maggi, ice cream, or ramen.
For me, aloo paratha ticks all the boxes: crispy outside, soft inside, mildly spiced, and deeply rooted in childhood memories. Comfort food doesn’t try to impress; it tries to heal—and aloo paratha does exactly that.

3. Street Food Adventures – Flavor, Fun, and Community
If comfort foods remind us of home, street foods awaken our adventurous side. I clearly remember my days posted at the N.S. Road Branch.
Lunchtime meant stepping out with colleagues to a bustling street lined with food stalls. The options were endless—steaming plates of machhli-bhaat (fish and rice), piping hot chole bhature, crisp aloo parathas.
What made it extraordinary wasn’t just the food, but the atmosphere—the warmth of stall owners, the hum of the crowd, the bursts of aroma from sizzling pans.
One funny memory stands out: a friend challenged me to eat a pani puri without flinching at the spicy water. I ended up sprinting to the nearest water tap while everyone doubled over laughing.
Street foods, I realized, are more than affordability; they are vibrancy. They carry the pulse of a city, the laughter of its people, and the creativity of cooks turning humble ingredients into masterpieces.
Whether it’s the tangy crunch of pani puri in India, sizzling kebabs in the Middle East, or soft dumplings in East Asia, street foods symbolize spontaneity, fun, and a sense of community—elements every family meal should have, in one way or another.

Why Favorite Meals Matter
Reflecting on these meals, I realize that the question “What are your family’s top three favorite meals?” is far deeper than it seems.
Meals are more than sustenance; they are culture, memory, humor, and emotion on a plate. Butter chicken reminds us of celebrations, aloo paratha evokes nostalgia and laughter, and street food awakens our sense of adventure and connection.
