# Joyful Habit That Brightens My Days

Daily writing prompt
Describe one habit that brings you joy.

Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood, wrapped in warmth and positivity. Today’s writing prompt is a thoughtful one: “Describe one habit that brings you joy.”

And while many habits bring happiness to my life—like morning walks, drinking green tea, or painting—it’s my daily writing habit that gives me the most joy.

Yes, the simple act of picking up a pen or opening a blank screen to pour out thoughts, stories, poems, or reflections has become more than just a hobby.

It is a habit that has not only enriched my post-retirement life but also helped me discover my true self. Let me take you on this journey.

During my banking days, life was dictated by numbers, rules, and responsibilities. Literature was a distant land I never ventured into. But something changed the day I retired.

The hustle paused, the clock slowed down, and I was left with the luxury of time—a gift that initially felt overwhelming. What do I do now? What is my purpose?

That’s when I stumbled upon writing. Slowly. Hesitantly. At first, I scribbled memories, penned a few poems, and wrote tiny reflections on life.

Over time, those scribbles turned into blog posts, poems into videos, and reflections into full-fledged stories. What began as an experiment soon became a joyful ritual.

There is something magical about writing every day. It allows me to relive the past, dream of the future, and make sense of the present. It brings clarity to my emotions and helps me connect with others across the world.

When I write, I feel free—like I’m dancing with my thoughts, painting with my words.

Here’s why this habit brings me immense joy:

Writing gives me a platform to speak without interruption, to express the deepest truths I carry within.

Whether it’s a blog about a childhood memory, a poem on love, or a reflection on nature, it allows me to communicate in my most authentic voice.

Each morning, when I sit to write, I feel like an artist facing a blank canvas. There’s endless potential.

I experiment with rhythm, rhyme, metaphors, and moods. Some days I write with humor, other days with sorrow—but each word adds color to my world.

Through my blog [retiredkalam.com], I have met countless readers, fellow writers, and friends.

Their comments, encouragement, and shared experiences make my writing feel alive. It’s a beautiful circle of giving and receiving joy.

Writing is therapy. It helps me process difficult moments, celebrate small joys, and stay mentally agile.

Especially after 66, this habit has become a wonderful brain exercise—keeping my thoughts flowing, memory sharp, and emotions balanced.

Like any habit, consistency is key. Every morning, after a cup of tea and a few stretches, I sit at my desk. Sometimes I write for 20 minutes, sometimes for two hours.

I don’t force perfection. I allow myself the grace to be imperfect and vulnerable. Often, I choose a writing prompt, and sometimes revisit a memory that touched me deeply. The result may be a poem, a reflective article, or even a short story.

And once a week, I turn these writings into short videos—adding music, visuals, and narration. It’s a joy to see my words come alive in this creative form.

The joy of writing isn’t reserved for poets or published authors. Anyone can write. You can begin with a gratitude journal, a letter to your younger self, or even a few lines about your day.

What matters is authenticity. Write not to impress, but to express.

Whether you’re 25 or 75, forming this habit can open new doors of self-discovery and joy.

So yes, dear friends, while I find joy in many habits—walking barefoot on grass, sketching my granddaughter’s smile, dancing with my partner—

Writing daily is the one habit that brings a deep, soulful joy that sustains me through all seasons of life.

To those reading this, I invite you to pick up the pen or open a blank page and start writing. Not for the world, but for yourself. You never know what part of you is waiting to be discovered.

Let your words bloom.

Warm regards,
Vijay Verma
