The Joy of Immersive Activities
Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful and reflective mood.
Today’s writing prompt is both simple and profound: “Which activities make you lose track of time?”
It’s a question that takes us deep into the essence of what truly engages us—what lights up our spirit, makes us forget the ticking clock, and immerses us so completely that we live entirely in the present moment.
For me, this question brings a smile, because I immediately think of writing, painting, reading, and sometimes, just watching nature unfold its silent poetry.
The Flow State: A Timeless Experience
Psychologists often refer to this experience as being in a “flow state”—a mental zone where one is fully absorbed in an activity with energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process.
In such moments, time seems to stretch or vanish. You look up, surprised to see hours have passed. This isn’t magic; it’s mindfulness. It is the rare gift of being truly present.
The activities that create this sense of timelessness often connect deeply with who we are. They resonate with our passions, challenge us in just the right way, and reward us emotionally or intellectually.

Writing: A Journey Within
Whenever I sit down to write—be it a poem, a story, or a heartfelt blog like this—I lose myself.
The world around me fades. Sentences form, memories unfold, emotions rise. One word leads to another, like stepping stones across a river.
I often start with a simple thought and end up discovering something new about myself.
Writing is not just an act of creativity; it’s an act of introspection. It’s a mirror to the soul.
There have been times when I looked at the clock and realized I had been writing for three hours straight—without a single pause for tea!

Painting: Colours Beyond Time
Another space where time blurs for me is during painting. The quiet stroke of a brush, the interplay of colour and canvas, the meditative silence that surrounds the process—this is my version of timelessness.
Sometimes, a single painting might take days. But while I’m working on it, there’s no yesterday, no tomorrow—only the vibrant now.
Each layer of colour feels like a breath. Each detail is like a heartbeat. As I mix shades and watch them dance into a new form, I feel connected to something greater than myself—pure creation.
Reading: A Portal to Other Worlds
Books have always had the power to make time disappear. A good story doesn’t just entertain; it transports.
Whether it’s wandering the hills of Malgudi with R.K. Narayan or exploring the dense forests of Ruskin Bond’s stories, I find myself in places I’ve never been, living lives I’ve never imagined.
Reading is a time machine that needs no technology. It teaches, heals, provokes thought, and, most importantly, it reminds us of the endless beauty of imagination.
I often tell myself I’ll read “just one more page”—only to realize the sun has gone down and hours have passed.

Nature Walks: Silence Speaks
Sometimes, even a walk in nature can take you away from the clock’s grasp. I walk, not to reach somewhere, but to lose myself in the rustling of leaves, the songs of birds, the texture of the breeze.
In those moments, the world slows down. The phone is forgotten, the worries pause, and life feels simple, sacred.
Watching the sky shift its colours during sunset, listening to raindrops tap on leaves, or simply sitting beside a river—these moments hold no urgency. They are timeless reminders that life doesn’t need to be rushed to be beautiful.
Why It Matters
You might wonder: what is the significance of losing track of time? Isn’t productivity measured by how well we manage our minutes and hours?
True—but these timeless moments are not about escaping time. They are about transcending it. They show us what we love, what fulfills us, what speaks to our truest self. They become the anchors of joy in a chaotic world.
In a society obsessed with speed, deadlines, and hustle, it’s essential to have spaces where time doesn’t dominate us.
These are the sanctuaries where we reconnect with ourselves, recharge our spirit, and remember that the best moments are not always measured in minutes but in meaning.

An Invitation to Reflect
So, dear reader, I invite you to pause today and ask yourself:
What makes you forget time?
Is it playing with your grandchild? Gardening? Dancing? Cooking with love? Writing your heart out?
Whatever it is, nurture it. Make time for it. Let yourself get lost, because sometimes, losing track of time is the best way to find yourself.
With warm thoughts and creative energy,
—— Vijay Verma
