# Small Habits for Big Environmental Changes #

Daily writing prompt
Are there things you try to practice daily to live a more sustainable lifestyle?

Hello dear friends,
I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood and good health. Today’s writing prompt truly struck a chord with me—
“Are there things you try to practice daily to live a more sustainable lifestyle?”

The answer, quite sincerely, is yes. In fact, sustainability is not just a buzzword—it’s a quiet revolution we can each take part in, starting right from our homes, our kitchens, and even our tea cups.

In today’s world of convenience and consumerism, the term sustainable encourages us to stop, think, and act thoughtfully. It doesn’t mean living without comforts or pleasures; rather, it means living in a way that allows the Earth to support future generations. 🌏

Let me share with you some daily practices I follow to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle—and I promise, they are all quite doable and deeply fulfilling.

My day begins with a warm cup of green tea—brewed not in plastic-laden tea bags but using loose leaves and a reusable strainer. It may seem minor, but avoiding disposable tea bags reduces microplastic waste.

Similarly, I avoid using paper napkins and reach for my cloth towel—a small act, but multiplied over time, it saves trees.

One of my favorite practices is composting kitchen waste. Fruit peels, vegetable ends, and tea leaves go straight into a small compost bin in the corner of my garden. It’s fascinating to watch waste turn into fertile soil—a metaphor for life itself.

In my home, leftovers are never wasted. I either reimagine them into new dishes or share them with someone in need.

Food waste is one of the most significant contributors to global carbon emissions, so managing it well is a powerful act.

Plastic is a silent enemy—convenient but catastrophic. I make it a point to carry a reusable cloth bag every time I step out, and always say no to plastic straws and spoons. My stainless steel water bottle is my constant companion.

Even when ordering online, I leave a note: “Please avoid plastic packaging if possible.” Sometimes they don’t listen—but sometimes they do. And every bit counts.

We have a habit of leaving appliances on standby. But I’ve cultivated a little ritual—before stepping out or sleeping, I walk through my home and unplug what’s not in use.
Using LED bulbs, turning off unnecessary fans, and washing clothes in cold water are now second nature.

Solar power isn’t accessible to all, but we can still reduce our energy footprint through awareness and discipline.

I try to follow the mantra—“Buy less, but buy better.” I choose clothes made of cotton or natural fibers. I resist impulse shopping. Before buying anything new, I ask myself, “Do I really need this?”

We don’t often realize that everything we consume—every shirt, gadget, or pair of shoes—has an environmental cost. Conscious consumption is one of the kindest things we can do for the planet.

I try to walk or cycle whenever possible. For short distances, I ditch the car. Not only is it good for the planet, but it’s great for my health too.😊

Public transport, shared rides, and carpooling are other practical options for a greener commute.

As a blogger and storyteller, I consider it my quiet duty to spread awareness. Whether it’s a poem about the beauty of trees or a blog post on reusing old jars, every word has the potential to inspire.

Our actions ripple outward. When someone sees you refusing a plastic bag or using a reusable cup, it plants a seed. And who knows? That one seed might grow into a forest of change.

Living sustainably isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being purposeful.
It’s about understanding that our choices matter.

Each time we refuse waste, conserve energy, or make a mindful decision, we are adding to a better world. And that, dear friends, is deeply empowering.

Let us remember what Anne Marie Bonneau said beautifully:

We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”

So yes, I do try to practice small, sustainable habits daily—not because I have to, but because I want to.
Because I care about this beautiful Earth… and the people who will walk it long after we are gone.

Let’s tread gently. 🌍
With hope,
– Vijay Verma

  5. Great post, my friend! The only comment I have is that actions not only ripple outwards, but also inwards! We are influenced by our own thoughts, words and actions as well.

    • Thank you, my friend! 🙏
What a beautiful and insightful addition—you’re absolutely right! Our actions indeed ripple inward as much as they do outward.
The habits we nurture shape our mindset, our peace of mind, and our overall sense of purpose. 🌿💭

Every small act of mindfulness reinforces our inner values, and in turn, influences how we show up in the world.
Thank you for reminding me—and all of us—of this deeper truth. 🌼

  6. If I’m going to be honest, this is a challenge for me. Thank you for the gentle reminder that I need to do better at protecting our Earth.

One thing that has helped me to care for the Earth is my water bottle and recycling bottles and cans. It’s small but it definitely adds up! Another thing that I’m currently working on is my overconsumption. It’s been a long journey but I’m at a munch better place. For example, I always thrift my books or explore my aunts old library when she was my age. I though to myself, books are books. What matters are the words on the page not how brand new it is.

Thank you for your post! You have a gift of being protecting creation, and that includes people too. Your kindness in all your post to your readers is a joy to see! Your willingness to pause, reflect, and use your platform to express the important of taking care of our Earth is inspirational!!

    • Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your open and heartfelt response. 🌍💚
Your honesty is deeply appreciated—and incredibly powerful. We’re all on a journey when it comes to sustainable living, and recognizing the challenge is already a meaningful first step. Your efforts—carrying a reusable water bottle, recycling, thrifting books, and being mindful of consumption—are not small at all. These are beautiful, conscious choices that reflect real change and intention. 📚🌱✨

I absolutely love what you said about books—“what matters are the words on the page.” So true! Wisdom doesn’t need shiny covers, just open hearts.

Your kind words truly touched me. If my writing has sparked even a small reflection or shift, then I feel my purpose is being fulfilled.

Let’s keep encouraging each other as we walk gently on this Earth—protecting not just the planet, but each other too. 🌿🌼
