Celebrating International Museum Day

A Memorable Visit to Mother’s Wax Museum

Hello dear friends,

I hope this Blog finds you in a cheerful mood.

In a time of change, museums play a key role in cultural resilience—adapting to new societal needs and encouraging open dialogue.

This year’s International Museum Day, today, focuses on the theme “The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities.”

It encourages us to see museums not just as places that hold history, but as active spaces that support communities, maintain heritage, and help create a better future.

Aligned with the 27th ICOM General Conference in Dubai, this theme highlights vital issues such as safeguarding intangible cultural heritage, harnessing the power of youth, and embracing technological innovation.

Museums are no longer static spaces; they are becoming vibrant hubs of education, engagement, and global citizenship.

Museums play a crucial role in educating us about our history, civilization, art, and culture. They connect us to the roots of our identity by preserving artifacts that reflect the creativity, lifestyle, and tools of ancient civilizations.

On this special day, we recognize museums for their dedication to science, history, and education—and for being platforms where innovative ideas and timeless stories converge.

Sometimes, a simple evening turns into a memory that lasts forever. A week ago, my family and I found ourselves searching for a unique place to spend a leisurely evening.

That’s when my son suggested a visit to Mother’s Wax Museum in New Town, Kolkata—a place that, until then, I had only heard about.

Located on the 5th and 6th floors of the West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation building, this remarkable museum was established in November 2014. Inspired by the world-renowned Madame Tussauds in London,

it features over 50 lifelike wax statues of iconic personalities across diverse fields—politics, sports, cinema, music, and more.

Fascinatingly, the museum is named in honor of Mother Teresa, a symbol of compassion and humanitarian service.

We entered the museum with eager anticipation. Using the lift to reach the 5th floor, we stepped into a world where history, art, and entertainment converged.

The museum honors national stalwarts like Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, B.R. Ambedkar, and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose—figures who have shaped India’s identity and inspired generations.

Kolkata’s cultural richness is celebrated through lifelike sculptures of Rabindranath Tagore, Swami Vivekananda, Sarada Devi, and Mother Teresa. Their statues seemed so real, it felt like they might speak to us any moment.

From Virat Kohli and Sourav Ganguly to global icons like Maradona and Lionel Messi, the Sports section was exhilarating—a tribute to the passion that unites fans across the globe.

The charm of cinema came alive as we encountered statues of Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, and the ever-energetic Mithun Da. The Hollywood section featured stars like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Audrey Hepburn, and Julia Roberts.

Music lovers would be delighted to see Michael Jackson, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Hemanta Mukherjee, and Kishore Kumar.

I couldn’t resist capturing selfies with these legends—especially Mr. Bean, whose statue was my personal favorite!

The museum was buzzing with visitors, all captivated by the sheer realism and artistry. After soaking in the exhibits, we headed to a cozy café on the 6th floor, where we enjoyed some refreshments.

From the top floor, the view of the New Town skyline added a perfect backdrop to our memorable evening.

I also managed to shoot a short video at the location, which captures the vibrant energy of the museum. You can view it by clicking [here]. (Insert your video link)

On this International Museum Day, let us celebrate and support museums for the essential role they play in preserving our heritage and inspiring future generations.

They are not just institutions of the past but living platforms that foster education, innovation, and community engagement.

Since its inception in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), this day has united museum communities worldwide.

The tradition of selecting an annual theme began in 1992, spotlighting the evolving challenges and opportunities facing museums today.

My visit to Mother’s Wax Museum reaffirmed the belief that museums are more than halls of memory—they are living narratives of who we are and who we aspire to be.

They connect generations, spark imagination, and offer us a chance to pause and reflect on our shared journey.

So today, let’s raise a toast to museums—the silent storytellers, cultural stewards, and bridges between the past, present, and future.

Happy International Museum Day!

  2. A good and thoughtful blog. The Einstein figure resonated with me as my father knew him, I did chuckle, though, at the brown sweater. Typically, he wore gray sweaters. I have a photo of him hanging in my office. Your post makes me think I should share a story or two about him on my website. Thank you for writing and posting the delightful photographs this Museum Day. I wish you and your family much happiness.

How incredible that your father knew Einstein—what a treasure of memories that must be!
I’d absolutely love to read your stories if you choose to share them; personal connections like that add such rich depth to history.
And you’re right about the sweater—perhaps a little artistic license at play! 😊
Wishing you and your family continued joy and inspiration. I’m truly touched by your message.”

  3. I have to say, I’m curious how the museum creators managed to link Mother Teresa with a wax museum — not the most intuitive pairing, is it? (:

    • That’s a great observation! 😊
At first glance, it may seem like an unusual pairing. But I think the museum aims to celebrate iconic personalities
who’ve touched the world in different ways — from celebrities to humanitarians like Mother Teresa.
Her presence there felt like a quiet reminder of compassion and service amidst the glitz.
Quite an unexpected but moving contrast!”
