Celebrating the Heartbeat of Family Day

Celebrating the Heartbeat of Life on International Family Day

Hello, dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful and peaceful state of mind. Today marks a beautiful and meaningful occasion — International Family Day — a day to pause, reflect, and celebrate the foundation of our lives: our families.

As I sit down to write these thoughts, a thousand memories rush through my mind — shared meals, joyful laughter, supportive hugs during tough times, and the comforting presence of my loved ones.

For me, family is not just important; it is everything. It is where life begins and love never ends.

In every conceivable manner, the family is a link to our past, bridge to our future.” – Alex Haley

This quote resonates deeply with me. Whether it’s the wisdom of our elders, the innocence of children, or the love between siblings and partners — family is that one constant in the ever-changing drama of life.

It is the soil in which we are planted and nurtured, the space where we grow and find our purpose.

We often underestimate the power of simple moments — a mother’s reassuring words, a father’s protective silence, a sibling’s mischievous smile, or a grandchild’s warm embrace.

These are not mere incidents; they are the essence of what makes life meaningful.

In this fast-paced world, it is easy to get caught up in the race for success and forget the very people who cheer us on from the sidelines.

Family Day serves as a gentle reminder that beyond the screens, deadlines, and responsibilities, there lies a sacred circle of people who define who we are.

“Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten.” – David Ogden Stiers

As someone who has traversed many seasons of life — the excitement of youth, the responsibilities of work, and now the peaceful reflection of retirement — I can say with all my heart: My family is my first and forever priority.

Their love is the anchor that held me steady during storms, the wind beneath my wings during achievements, and the soft pillow where I rest my worries at night.

Every member of my family contributes a unique melody to the song of my life.

And now, as a grandfather, I see the circle of love continue to expand. Watching my granddaughter’s curious eyes and innocent laughter fills me with hope. She is a reminder that the legacy of love lives on.

Whether you’re in India, Iceland, or Indonesia — the essence of family remains universal.

It may be a joint family in one part of the world or a nuclear one elsewhere, but the emotions, the bonds, and the silent support remain the same.

International Family Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, seeks to highlight the significance of families in shaping societies and promoting well-being.

It reminds us to not only celebrate our own families but also advocate for policies that support families around the globe.

“Rejoice with your family in the beautiful land of life!” – Albert Einstein

Here are a few timeless elements that, I believe, make a family truly strong:

  • Love and Respect: The foundation of every strong family. We may not always agree, but mutual respect is non-negotiable.
  • Time Together: Be it meals, vacations, or simple evening walks — shared time builds bonds.
  • Communication: Listening is as important as speaking. Emotions need an outlet.
  • Traditions and Rituals: Whether it’s Sunday lunch, bedtime stories, or annual trips — these create lasting memories.
  • Forgiveness and Understanding: No one is perfect. Letting go of small grudges strengthens relationships.

“Other things may change us, but we start and end with the family.” – Anthony Brandt

Sometimes, when I am painting or writing, a quiet moment will tug at my heart — a flashback to my childhood home, or the smile of a loved one now gone.

These are not just memories. They are reminders of the love that shaped me.

If you are fortunate to have your family close by, hug them a little tighter today. If they are far, call them, write to them, let them know how deeply you care.

And if you’ve lost someone dear, light a candle in their memory — because their love still lives within you.

Dear friends, let’s use this day not only to celebrate our own families but to extend our compassion to those who may be alone or struggling.

A kind word, a helping hand, or even just your time can be the warmth someone needs.

“The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing.” – Unknown

So today, on International Family Day, let us reaffirm our promise to be there for each other — not just in joy, but in sorrow, not just in presence, but in heart.

With love from my family to yours,
Vijay Verma
