# Dance Day: A Global Joy for All

Hello dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood, with a smile on your face and maybe a little rhythm in your step.

Today is International Dance Day, a day that makes us pause, sway, and smile in celebration of one of the oldest, most expressive, and universal forms of human connection—dance.

Although I’m not a professional dancer, I must admit—I love to dance.

It’s a hobby that instantly lifts my spirit. A slow dance in the drawing room, a spontaneous move in the kitchen, or just a foot tapping along with an old melody—these simple acts remind me that dance is not about perfection; it’s about expression.

Dance has been with humanity for thousands of years. From tribal ceremonies and temple rituals to royal courts and Broadway stages, the language of movement has always been a part of human culture.

Ancient Indian cave paintings, dating back 9,000 years, depict dancing figures, showing us that long before words were written, bodies told stories.

On International Dance Day, we honour this rich legacy. But more importantly, we invite everyone—yes, even those with “two left feet”—to let go and experience the pure joy of dancing.

Why do we dance? Because we’re happy, because we’re sad, because we’re in love, or just because the music is too good to ignore. Dance is freedom.

It allows us to lose our inhibitions, to express what words cannot, and to feel alive in the truest sense.

It is one of the most powerful forms of therapy. When we dance, we reconnect with ourselves. We forget our age, our worries, our limitations. We find rhythm in chaos and stillness in motion.

It’s no wonder that dance is often recommended to boost mental health, reduce stress, and improve physical fitness.

You don’t need a stage or an audience. All you need is a little space, a beat, and a willing heart.

  1. Dance Alone: Play your favourite song and just move. No judgment, no choreography—just joy.
  2. Join a Class or Group: Participate in a local dance workshop or community event. Dancing with others creates connection and laughter.
  3. Watch & Learn: Explore different dance styles online. Try salsa, tango, kathak, hip-hop, or even something new like Kizomba or jumpstyle.
  4. Put on a Show: If you’re part of a group, consider organizing a small performance at a community centre, park, or even your street. The more, the merrier!
  5. Record Yourself: Make a short video. Not for perfection, but for posterity. Watch it next year—you’ll be amazed by your progress and courage.

International Dance Day is more than just individual fun—it’s a global celebration of unity. It breaks cultural barriers and showcases how movement connects us all.

From the fierce Haka of the Māori to the graceful Rejang of Bali… from the passionate flamenco of Spain to the elegant ballet of Russia—each dance is a cultural treasure.

Today, we embrace them all, acknowledging the diversity that makes our world beautiful.

Modern genres like jazz, hip-hop, and contemporary dance also have a place here. They represent today’s evolving cultures and blend influences from all over the world.

Dance, after all, is a universal language—one that doesn’t require translation.

Initiated in 1982 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI), Dance Day is celebrated on April 29th, the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, the creator of modern ballet.

Since then, it has grown into one of the most beloved global events, highlighting dance’s role not just in art, but in social and cultural integration.

Every year, a message from a renowned dancer or choreographer is shared with the world—reminding us that every movement matters, whether you’re on a world stage or dancing barefoot in your room.

On this International Dance Day, I celebrate with gratitude. Though I may not dance with perfect rhythm, I dance with a happy heart.

Whether it’s twirling with my granddaughter in the living room or simply watching a beautiful performance online, dance brings delight and connection into my life.

Let us remember: life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

So go ahead—take your passion and make it happen. Move. Groove. Celebrate.

Happy International Dance Day!

With rhythm and regards,
Mr. Verma
