The History of International Women’s Day

In 1908, 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote. A year later, the first National Women’s Day was observed in the United States.

In 1910, a conference of women from around the world was held in Copenhagen, Denmark.

There, Clara Zetkin, a German socialist, proposed the idea of an International Women’s Day, to be celebrated on the same day every year. The proposal was unanimously approved, and the first International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911.

Since then, March 8 has been officially recognized as International Women’s Day, observed by the United Nations and countries worldwide as a moment to honor women’s contributions and advocate for gender equality.
