# My Expensive Writing Desk#

Daily writing prompt
Name the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not your home or car).

Dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you in a cheerful mood! Today’s writing prompt is intriguing, stirring up a little trip down memory lane. “What is the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not including your home or car)?”

It’s a question that took me by surprise as it asked me to revisit an item I might have overlooked in my usual reflections.

As I considered my life, one item came to mind that stands out for its value—not just in terms of money, but for its impact on my life and journey.

It might sound unusual, but the most expensive item I’ve ever purchased, beyond the essentials, is a beautifully crafted, antique writing desk. You might wonder, “Why a desk?” Well, allow me to share the story behind it.

A few years after my retirement, I stumbled upon this desk in a quaint antique shop. It wasn’t a purchase I had planned or budgeted for, but something about it caught my eye.

It was made of rich mahogany, with intricate carvings and a warm, polished finish that seemed to tell stories of its own.

The desk was clearly from an era long gone—perhaps a century or more—and had seen the hands of many before it found its way to me.

At first, I hesitated. The price was steep, and I wondered if it was practical. Yet, something compelled me to make that purchase.

It was as if the desk was inviting me to sit down and let my thoughts flow. In a way, it symbolized a new chapter in my life.

To some, an expensive item might be a watch, a piece of jewelry, or a gadget, but for me, this desk holds a value that goes far beyond its price.

After years in a busy banking career, my post-retirement life has been focused on creativity—writing, painting, and exploring thoughts I never had the time to chase.

This desk became my companion, my space of solace and inspiration. It’s where I write my blogs and poems, pen down my stories, and sketch out ideas for my art.

In a world where possessions often come and go, I realized that this desk was something I could see myself keeping for life, passing down as a family heirloom.

My granddaughter has often joined me at this desk, and we’ve shared many moments—her with her coloring books and me with my wrI like to think that she’ll remember those times and perhaps treasure this desk one day.

Purchasing that desk wasn’t just about acquiring an item; it was about investing in a part of myself. It represented the shift from a life focused on financial goals to one centered on creative pursuits. The desk reminds me daily of the importance of creating and sharing my work, of having a place dedicated to my thoughts, where my creativity can flourish.

So, while I’ve bought many things over the years, this desk remains the most significant purchase in my life beyond a home or car.

It is a symbol of a journey, a transition, and a cherished companion on this new path. Sometimes, the most expensive things we buy aren’t measured solely by their price but by the memories, growth, and passion they help us unlock.

And so, dear friends, what about you? What is the most valuable personal item you’ve ever purchased? Perhaps it’s something just as simple but holds just as much meaning.

Happy reading, and may we all continue to cherish those special items that bring joy to our lives.

BE HAPPY….BE ACTIVE….BE FOCUSED….BE ALIVE…

  4. A very wise choice and investment. It’s so hard to get decent furniture anymore, everything is made of cheap and flimsy material. Maybe I’ll check the antique stores!

  5. It is wonderful, you acquired an antique desk which is enhancing your creativity.

The item, I once bought was a painting by a French artist – whereas my husband

wanted me to buy a fax machine 🙂 .

    • Thank you! 😊
I love that story—choosing a beautiful painting over a fax machine sounds like a perfect decision to me!
Art has a way of bringing so much inspiration and warmth into our lives, far beyond the utility of technology.
I bet that painting still brings you joy every time you see it. 🎨✨😊

It was useful … but as you said: Art can’t be compared
