# My Hardest Personal Goal

Daily writing prompt
What was the hardest personal goal you’ve set for yourself?

Dear friends,

I hope this blog finds you hale and hearty. Today, I want to dive into an intriguing question posed by Todid: “What was the hardest personal goal you’ve set for yourself?”

The resonance of this question with the goals we set in life is undeniable, and I couldn’t help but reflect on my own journey.

Setting personal goals is an essential part of life. It provides us with direction, purpose, and motivation. But, if you’ve ever set a goal that truly matters, you’ll know it’s not always easy.

In fact, the hardest goals often shape us the most. So, today, let’s explore the significance of these challenging milestones and how we can overcome them with time, effort, and persistence.

Personal goals can take many forms—whether it’s running a marathon, mastering a new language, overcoming a fear, or pursuing a creative passion. What makes a goal truly hard? Is it the physical effort, the emotional toll, or perhaps the sheer persistence required to see it through?

For me, the hardest personal goal I ever set was transitioning from a career in banking to becoming a writer and artist after retirement.

For over 35 years, I lived a structured life, focused on numbers, finance, and systems. It wasn’t a life I had chosen with passion, but one that I fell into.

My goal after retirement was to completely reinvent myself—to explore literature, writing, and art, and discover my true creative identity. It was terrifying. I had no formal training, no roadmap, and no clear idea of what success would even look like.

The first and perhaps most challenging part of any hard goal is overcoming the fear of the unknown. Stepping out of your comfort zone—whether it’s leaving behind a familiar career or starting something new—is incredibly intimidating.

The hardest part wasn’t just learning new skills, but embracing the idea that I could fail, and that failure was a necessary part of growth.

In the early stages, I questioned myself constantly: “Am I too old to start this journey? Will anyone care about what I write or create? What if I am not good enough?”

These doubts are familiar to anyone who has set a hard goal, but the key is to recognize them as part of the process.

Every time I pushed past the fear, I found myself one step closer to my goal. Small victories—a completed blog, a finished poem, or a published story—became my milestones.

Every hard goal seems monumental at first, and this is where the second key lesson comes into play: break it down into smaller, manageable tasks.

When I first started writing and painting, the idea of publishing a book or having an art exhibition felt like an unattainable dream. But by focusing on smaller, more immediate objectives, I gained momentum.

I began by writing short blogs, experimenting with poetry, and creating small pieces of art. These smaller tasks were achievable, and each completed one gave me the confidence to tackle the next.

Over time, I realized that the hardest part of any goal is often just getting started. Once I was in motion, things began to flow.

A Journey of Growth and Self-Discovery

The hardest personal goals are not completed in a straight line. There are inevitable setbacks, roadblocks, and moments of doubt.

In my journey, I’ve had my fair share of writer’s block, rejections, and failed art pieces. But persistence is what ultimately sets apart those who achieve their goals from those who give up.

There were days when I felt like abandoning my new creative pursuits altogether. However, I reminded myself that the hardest goals are the ones worth fighting for.

I came to understand that progress is not always visible—sometimes it’s happening beneath the surface, shaping you in ways you won’t realize until later.

There’s something profoundly satisfying about working toward and achieving a hard goal. It doesn’t just change your external circumstances; it transforms you on the inside.

For me, the journey to becoming a writer and artist has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It has not only given me new skills and passions but has also reshaped my sense of identity and purpose.

Today, when I look back, the hardest part of my journey wasn’t mastering the technical aspects of writing or painting. It was believing in myself enough to pursue this goal.

That’s true for most personal goals—we are often our own biggest obstacle. But once we commit, once we allow ourselves to dream and to strive, we begin to realize just how capable we are.

In the end, the hardest personal goals often turn out to be the most fulfilling. They challenge us to grow, to step outside our comfort zones, and to become better versions of ourselves.

The next time you set a personal goal and it feels hard, remember that the difficulty is part of the process. It’s what will make the achievement so much sweeter in the end.

So, dear friends, I encourage you to set hard goals for yourself. Embrace the challenges, push past the fear, and take it one step at a time. After all, it’s not the destination that matters most—it’s the journey and who you become along the way.

Happy goal-setting!
